ahh claudia
Well after about 6months of not doing much to my 6n g40 i decided i need to get back on it.Heres my other thread if your interested in the build up till now http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=38208 and the engine was removed as i wasnt totaly happy with the overall finish

been doing a little work on the 6n g40s bay wanted it to be smoother and cleaner without the going over the top.so i removed all the factory sealer an resealed the seams neatly and welded an smoothed a few holes just to tidy the hole thing up a little

got it all masked up this morning ready for a couple of coats of 2k primer

all primed should be back in green by the end of the weekend lol.gif

cheers

Some good looking work there thumbsup.gif Liking the newspaper choices too lol

is it me or is that filler over the chassi number ? or is chassi number not were i think it is ?
D16RRT
I have no idea why someone would want to put a G40 engine into a 6n confused.gif but hats off to your dedication and passion for it
ahh claudia
cheers jack

dabbsy the chassis number on a 6n is inside the scuttle panel if you look at the 1st 2 pics you can just see it on the right hand side

a few people have said this but when you look at the fact 100bhp 16v is the biggest engine you can get standard then a g40 running 150/160bhp is a good way to go.My main reason was i dont like mk3s I've had 5 g40s as i love the engine but mk3s cant handle that power and i like the drive/handling of a 6n which is by far better than any mk3 even in standard form.i also had a rotten g40 sat around with a good engine and a slow 1.6 mk4 seamed perfect to me.mk4s do have the extra weight but also means it can put the power down better than a mk3 with similar spec its not as raw but more refined in my eyes and for what i was after it was a really good compromise

cheers

I understand why you want the engine lol.gif Your 6n looked sweet before and you've trashed it to put a G40 engine in it, just don't get it, sorry
I dunno what it is and don't think I'm being a bitch when I say this Luke... But if I as at a show and I saw a 6n with a G40 engine in it, me and most people I know would just turn up their lip up, go urgh and walk on... See a original G40 and I'd be stopping to grind it haha. Each to their own though I guess, but again I'm liking your dedication

I'll let you off then, you saved a dying G40 lol.gif

Wouldn't you lose bhp because of the weight?
You should have saved the G40 and got another shell and put a 20VT into the 6n tbh nod.gif
chrisbin
youll lose speed not bhp, the bhp/weight will be different, but the actual bhp of the engine wont change,

btw, I'm really liking the car, looks really smart. keep us posted

You won't lose any horses just because the 6N shell is heavier. You will affect the power-to-weight ratio yes (if directly comparing an identically-specced mk3 G40 and a 6N G40). To compensate, just tune the G40 lump up a touch more, or remove unnecessary weight from the 6N!

Have you seen the cost of a 20vT conversion? I'm sure the G40 conversion is cheaper, and its power output far better suits the front-wheel-drive 6N chassis. Why have 280bhp if you can't use it? smile.gif

Cheers

OK wasn't sure, but with the extra weight you'd be losing speed so would it be worth it?
I wouldn't know, that's why I ask these questions lol.gif I don't have the knowledge
Anyone know?

I'm sure it is cheaper haha especially as he had the G40 engine already, but not many people have got it and I know which I'd prefer!
I'd use that bhp, 20VT smiles... Then move on to bigger and better!

ahh claudia
tbh it doesnt make a huge difference its mainly the acceleration the 6n isnt as savage as a mk3 it puts the power down cleaner if you get me but some of that will be running 15s.I totaly see your point though as with anything it has its advantages and disadvantages. Also if the donor was a solid car i would have saved it but standard looking mk3s arent my thing i like to build what i want which tbh i cant see that I've trashed it

if your really quick bud you might just finish it in time for the oxford vw meet!

looks like your finally getting somewhere with it! you moved house yet?

nice one Luke nice to see it back on the go. As you know I'm a right original g40 whore but i can totally understand this..even a g40 with the same power as this 6n g40 conversion, yes more weight in the 6n but end of the day with a better handling car the 6n will kill the mk3 g40 setup. Something people often overlook is the handling of a car and think power power power...g40's in a mk3 are not too clever without spending a bomb. My g40 even with its suspension upgrades is severly comprimised by the bad handling and brakes...defo a good move i think id be quite happy with something like this myself...never gonna do it though as i love mk3's but what you have done...does make sense when you actually know what your on about....
grungeisdead
sad to see some of the flock have left, but its good that your back on the go again! will be sweet when its back ont road.

did you remove all the nothes and random holes from the bay or just the ones on the scuttle panel/firewall lip thing and the studs on the tops of the turrets? do they actually serve a purpose
ahh claudia

cheers dan it would actually be nice to use it though lol ill get there in the end the weight does restrict it a little but i prefere going round corners than straight lines so it suits me perfectly

cheers saf yeh it is a we bit sad that I've thinned them out but the comet blue is staying now got a house with a drive big enough lol

i havnt removed all the holes just a little tidy up.Was going to completely smooth it all but then to put everything back in the bay would have looked odd so I've left a few bits to leave a bit o character if that makes sense

right piccy time

things done
bay resprayed
new subframe which has been powdercoated
new bottom arms also powder coated
new steering rack
new track rods
new track rod ends

lots more to come just waiting on parts which has been a real pain as I've had the wrong bits delivered

Great project mate, very inspiring, will look sweet when it's finished smile.gif

So what's needed for the conversion?

Is it pretty much plug and play minus the wiring etc??

I'd have paid my car off by August next year (after 2 years ownership) and i reckon I'm gonna want to keep it as much as get something new, so an enigne swap would be the only thing left by the time i could insure it.. and I've always wanted a G40 smile.gif

Great project on the go mate, its going too look freesh when its complete keep it up dude.

theres nothing plug and play at all engine mount had to be fabricated ,wiring ect its quite alot more work than youd expect and has cost me alot of money

cheers alex yeh it is good to see a little progress.Engine spec wise I'm running pretty much the same as oli other than mines still 1272cc and oli ran a stand alone oil supply for the charger so not quite the same spec I'm hoping for at least 160bhp as thats over half what the original 1.6 was

You was sayin about engine mounts mate, what exactly did you have to do there? I thought a g40 would go straight in a mk4??

Also what were the other problems have you came across?
ahh claudia
I havnt had much time for this for the last year i got the engine so i could move it to my house from my mums and its bin sat in the garage ever since as the house has been eating my time.I had a moment of madness and contemplated breaking it up for parts and just buying a car i could use but the last few months I've been able to do bits here and there in between other stuff.I've managed to get the roof painted today as i got rained off and painted both wings, mirrors and sill a few weeks previos.I've just been to vw to pick up a new ignition switch and pass mirror glass as i broke it removing it for paint.

heres a couple of pics of the roof the white area in the pics i a reflection of the sheeting i used to stop shit from falling of my lovely asbestos roof

fingers crossed! been a long time in the making!! hope your gonna bring it to the oxford meet when its done!

Can you give me a bit of inspiration to finish mine Luke?
ahh claudia
After a very late night last night of getting little bits sorted it passed the mot no problems but got a couple of niggly problems temp guage not working and I've got a little chattery noise from the the front somewhere. It was struggling to pull on the way to the mot but found the clutch was adjusted up a little to much so sorted that and its much better but still not quite right plus i think it needs a better map as its not very responsive.so after a hectic week its now moted taxed and insured and after I've sorted the niggly things i can actually get some use out of it.Its never going to be a show stopper but i plan to drive it not trailor it so not really after a perfect body aslong as its presentable I'm happy.Spent a couple of hours giving it a polish but the paint is minging so needs a good day just to make it look a bit better.Oh and to top of the day as i was putting it away the drivers window fell out so thats another job for tommorow damn cars lol

thanks for all your comments and dan i hope you do get some inspiration its alot of greif but even though its still not right it put such a smile on my face to drive it again after all this time

jon i will try and make the next meet but please dont expect it to be a full on show car

cheers
luke
MartinB
Nice one Luke! At least the weather is getting better now so you can get these niggly bits done and at it's on the road now so that's the main thing.
