running a big ice install? lots of auxiliary equipment? have no fear!

i used a 90A alternator as found on big block golfs (ones with air con, powersteering etc have 90A ones).

first off, you need to fit the polo pulley onto the golf alternator. i had to mod one of the spacers to go on but its nowt 2mins with a file wont sort. (the golf alternator has a keywayed shaft, polo one doesnt).

i then drilled the top mounting hole out from 8mm to 10mm as the polo uses a 10mm bolt.

the next problem is the tensioner bolt hole (the one with the cogged wheel on) is in a different position, so i made an extension bracket:

you bolt one end to the engine, and the standard tensioner bracket on the other end with a 12mm spacer between (i used a stack of washers as a temporary fix, i will make a proper spacer later)

then you just gotta bolt the wires onto the terminals and put the polo belt on and your good to go!

dont forget to put a chunky new earth cable on too while youre at it wink.gif

you mean that pissy blue one? it also earths through the engine mount doesnt it?
Gaz
i think he means the one that it looks like youve replaced (from engine mount to chassis.) that blue wire has something to do with the warning system in the car i think.

its the one that bolts to the chassis, looks like its the red one in your pic pinchy, or is that from the battery?

they're two of 'the big three' (third one being battery to chassis earth) which helps prevent bottle neck in current flow which is what causes headlight dimming

I presume this would fit to a mk2 as well? How do distinguish a big block golf? or are they the only ones with power steering and air con? what marks do they come on because i'll raid the scrap yard on friday thumbsup.gif

A 063 or 065 is fine. It's only there to start the engine.

Jimsiss
if you get one from a diesel then they are normally a straight swap apart from the pulley as the diesels mount the opposite way too the petrols due to the injector pump
kieran999
