If you lower your car on standard shocks, it won't handle much better than standard, and your shocks will wear out very quickly. You can lower 40mm on standard shocks but they wont last very long, any lower will wear them out silly quick.
Can people verify this? All without arch work
MK4 - (All assumed to be 7/7.5" wide)
17s - Gonna scrub at 40mm down, and hit the innerwing on full lock.
16s - OK to 60mm down with 195/40 tyres, with any bigger will scrub.
15s - OK till 80mm + down on 195/45s (depending on offset)
13x6s - et 13 didnt scrub at 60mm down on 175/50s
16x7.5 - et35 lowered 60mm on 195/45s scrubbed and needed arch work (or smaller tyres)
MK2 and 3 coupes (assuming they will be the same, and 6/7" widths and normal offsets)
15s - 40mm down will scrub
14s - OK to 70mm I've heard on 195/45s
13x7 et -7 front 13x8 et6 rear lowered 60/40 on 175/50s no scrubbage
Obviously alot depends on offset, and how hard the suspension is....
Can everyone add to this with what suspension they are running, and offsets if the arches have been rolled etc? And for Mk1's, Mk2n3 squarebacks. Mk5 must be the same as a Mk4?

13x5.5 ET19 -70mm 165/55/13 mk1 ('81) Derby. Doesn't scrub on the arches but if you hit a small pot hole it will bash the fuck out of the arches.
13x4.5 ET45 -70mm standard tyre size (forget the numbers) doesn't scub, not on full lock and not on speed bumps or anything.

lowered 25mm on g40 springs with 185/60/14s is fine though.

Can add another one. 13x7 et-7 with 175 50s front, and 13x8 et 6 with 195 45s back, lowered 60/40 on an HnR kit, doesnt scrub at all, not even at 30mph speed bump.

doesn't it depend on how hard ur suspension is. Standard mk3 polo suspension is waaay soft

mk3, 13x7 et3 all round. -70mm on spax adjustable damping kit. Arch lips bashed back and sealed. Backs rub occasionally, not sure about fronts but theres about 2cm's clearance. Also, hits the floor very regularly, but I think thats mostly because of my terrible hanging exhaust

From experience (and contrary to what's been written - no offence meant)
40mm drop or less will be fine on standard shocks on a Mk2/3. Not ideal, maybe, but I ran around with that setup for quite a few years with no adverse affects, as did many other people - anything lower will need shorter shocks though and it's better to use gas shocks as direct replacements over the crappy oil ones.
195/45/15 wheels/tyres @ 6J and ET 38 will / will not rub depending on how lucky you are with your car build. Mine only caught VERY slightly at one rear corner, even under load, but other people had to carry out various degrees of arch work, although none included any serious metal removal.
As 195/45/15 is pretty much standard rolling radius, then using a tyre size calculator should give you a good idea as to what variations on a theme you can / should be able to get away with - although it's not a 100% method............

85/70mm drop on fk shocks and springs rears on third line down no scrubbage on standard gt steels with standard tyres not sure of size 165/?? 13's except when loaded up for college over big motorway bumps
i tried 195/45 15x7 ats cups but the arch basically sat on the arches lol
when 4 up on the driver steels the jetex system catches on the floor on the smallest of bumps lol
when normal 1-2 up speed bumps have to be negotiated very carfully else the floor can come very close to saying hello to them I've not beached it yet tho lol

How u doin guys?
Just bought a polo GTI 2001, i wanna make it look crazy hot and have already decided on the wheels. I'm just after a bit of advice on a few things,
1. I need to get some coilovers but i'm not sure which ones, i am pretty set on some FK's but can't really afford the highsport. Will the entry levels do the job as i am looking to spend no more than £300, if so any suggestions where to get them from?
2. I wanna get some carmonals (16x7.5) will these be able to go straight on with any archwork? These wheels also need a universal fitment, are these safe to use?

Thanks!
