As above Si mate lol.gif !

Seeing your mats reminds me I need to buy new ones. Mine look tatty.
volkswagen16v
Hi,
very nice car mate. Just wondering if you can hit 60mph in 2nd? The reason being i'd like to put a gti box in my 1.4 16v as it currently won't. Also had you thought about powder coating the centres of your split rims?
Si_GTi
Umm... I'll find out about 2nd gear for you tomorrow mate... and yeah, have thought about powdercoating the centres! Originally thought about black centres but I'm not feeling that any more so will probably go for super shiney silver - as shiney bright as possible without resorting to chrome!! biggrin.gif

EDIT: yes, 60mph is acheivable in 2nd gear, with the redline approaching fast!
volkswagen16v
Quality news about the 2nd gear stuff. Will have to see if I can source a box now. I also have the Gti wheels and can make my mind up wether to go for a set of 17"s or get them refurbed....

Don't get 17's - not only will they make your car look like a 4x4, you'll probably have loads of rubbing problems with the arches aswell.

The early GTi's had manual climate control and a sun roof (although that might have been an extra, not sure)
Si_GTi
Yeah I have manula A/C as above. The sunroof was an £800 option if my information is correct, I don;t know if mine had one specced by the original owner, or if it was specced by VW that way before being built smile.gif

DM, I got my BMC 2nd hand from a guy who goes by "Prash" on uk-polos and now club lupo. The TT pedals came from VAGparts and cost about £30 wink.gif
DM_DUBGTI
My gti that I've just had was a W reg and that had climate, and I've seen a few knocking about on autotrader a while ago which had sunroof and climate AND leather, my god that would be a heaven GTi biggrin.gif

Alex_6n2
Good lad! If you come to the midlands meet will they be on then?

I was hoping to compare my car to yours (at standard height)
DM_DUBGTI

I'll make some measurements before the car gets lowered (from arch to ground, arch to centre of wheel, front and back). Done this before for a fellow GTi owner and he did the same, then we figured out roughly how far he'd lowered his car.

Sadly (for you) yeah they will be on! They get fitted on the 25th, just waiting on a complete set of new top mounts from vagparts to arrive and it's on and poppin' lol.gif
CymruPolo
About time mate! lol.gif

Looking forward to seeing it cool.gif

New suspension now being fitted on December 2nd so yes, you will get to compare your tarmac terrorist with my 4x4 (comparatively speaking!) at the Midlands meet smile.gif

The other news is that earlier today I won an auction for some G60 steels on eBay so they will be fitted in due course, after having been powdercoated in a top secret finish lol.gif
olop_chris
Its all happening now Si! Shall look forward to seeing your car again after It's all done!

Has your mum not shouted at you yet for getting coilovers? haha

It was going dark by the time everything was finished. I'll have to get off my arse, clean the car, and go and take a full set of photos some time. Too windy at the moment rolleyes.gif
sally_healey
SUCH a niiiiicccceeee car - definitely want to lower mine now (yours made mine look soooooooo high!)......
Alex_6n2
Looks muchos better. The kind of ride height it should come with from factory tbh
GTILass
how dropped is that?
Si_GTi

Its roughly 60mm lower. I measured from arch to the centre of the wheel both front and rear, before and after lowerage, and it works out to be about 60mm smile.gif
DannyMk5
loads better dude!
DM_DUBGTI
That picture really does compliment the car... looks awesome!! biggrin.gif

I cant wait for my -60mm kit so i can pimp the same ride height as you cool.gif
Si_GTi
Gave the car a swift wash and nipped off to the same location where I took pics last time round, check this out:

Yes. Fixing her up! lol.gif
  • gearbox requires attention. Might be something as simple as misaligned linkages, could be a lot more expensive. Ask Sally what she made of 1st gear at UD surprised.gif
  • possibly need a new wheel bearing on the front nearside, there is a curious whine from that area of the car when in motion (intermittent)
  • coilovers need to come up a couple of millimetres on the back to reduce scrubbage from crap roads and harsh bumps (Newport -> Shrewsbury back road)
  • oh and I'm still missing 10hp I think! A damned good service, new oil, new filters, new HT leads, plugs and a clean of the air filter will see those back I hope.

On the modification side:
  • tinted rear lights and side repeaters are due back to me next week ready for fitting
  • 130mm x 105mm "stubby" driver's side mirror
  • new wheels possibly depending on how much money it costs to fix her up in the top list!

Busy times ahead neutral.gif but it'll all be OK when the new lights go on and "project stealth" is complete unibrow.gif

Surprising what a new set of leads & plugs will do, will feel like a new 'un!!!

Coilovers not a bit job, 30 mins & you'll be done or use the M54!!!!
richardj1986
how much did the coilovers set you back i want my car lowered as a first option and 1st mod. but pot holes r annoying

£450 plus fitting (£100) plus new top mounts all round (£56) plus tracking and camber re-adjustment (£30) is a total of £636. Best investment I ever made in this car thumbsup.gif
sally_healey
Haha, can't wait to see the next additions Si.

Have to say it does look very black & stealthy on the road badgrin.gif
Si_GTi
Ha, this is a first, I'm going to quote my own post!

This has now been fixed, twas the clutch that required adjusting. Now that it has been readjusted it is absolutely mint again biggrin.gif

Air filter bracket has been rounded off and tightened, solved that little niggle! Wheel bearings are all OK.

And I've bought some new wheels seeing as the gearbox is all OK. They are German, they are BBS, I cannot say any more until they are in my possession!!! smirk.gif
