6n2 Polo swap

Greetings!!

I embarked on this project 1.8T swap on a 6n2 polo... Hello! hope someone can advice on a 6n2 1.4 tdi radiator fan not coming on at all. I have checked all the basics. all fuses are good in the fuse box in the dash, all fuses are good on the fuse box on top of battery including the metal ones (removed and checked). I have also tested the fan directly with the battery and it spins. I have connected the two pins together on the fan switch in the radiator and the fan spins. The fan switch is a triangle shaped with only 2 pins from the factory (red/white & red/black). I have also tested for 12v on the fan switch wire and there is power in (red/black) wire. The fan itself has 2 wires (red/white and brown). There is ground on the brown wire via test light. Is there suppose to be 12V constant power on the (white/red) wire of the fan? Because there is none when ignition is ON. Is there a relay under the dash for the fan that I can replace? Also the horn does not sound but that is not important at the moment. Help Please!

Hi, I have been using club polo for quite some time and become a member about a year ago so I thought it was about time I'd do a build thread of my own project or two. A few years ago I bought a polo 6n2 that had some previous modifications and with a few of my own has become great both on road and track with its superior handling (mods will be listed later). The only thing that lets the car down is the lack of power only being a 1400 8v (60hp standard). I am planning on swapping out the 1.4 for the 1.8t 20v sometime in the next two years. Before I do that I must finish my other big projects first but there's nothing wrong with a small project in my spare time with a few spare parts and a little bit of fabrication right? So thinking that I managed to get my hands on a perfectly good turbo off a 1.0 ecoboost engine that had blown internally and luckily enough I got it for nothing as it would have ended up in the scrap pile anyway. If this turbo is good enough or a 1.0 engine then surely it will be good for a 1.4 on low boost?

I'm not expecting massive power gains or to spend hundreds or thousands to make it perfect, just messing around with the engine and a small turbo and a few tools in my spare time for a bit of fun.

I'll post more pics and keep this thread updated as much and as soon as I can when I start this small project (hopefully soon) but here's a few pics I took when I was measuring up the parts and as always when starting a project it looks like it all will fit and looks great but if experience has taught me anything it's that nothing is ever as simple as it looks 😉

On a snowy day back in 2009 I managed to crash my wifes 6N into a raised bus stop curb, as you can imagine the results were impressive. Passenger side wheel at 45 degrees to the drivers and the steering wheel was upside down, we scrapped the car as a result. This wasn't a rash decision, lots of advisories on the previous MOT....oh and it was Cat C'ed a couple of years earlier when we were in a 4 car shunt in standing traffic. Boot lip pushed in 3 - 4 inches and front serverely deformed....we patched it up for £20 and kept driving! Car was brought for £1500 and we got £1100 payout, plus sold some parts....not bad for a car we had owned for 4 years at the time with 100k on the clock.

So we ended up getting a sensible car, an 06 Honda Accord diesel...was the sport edition!

And while we drove that around I picked up this....

And turned it into this...(Build thread here)

At the start of the month I decided that the car had cost more than enough and that I should probably think about replacing my wifes Polo 6 years later.....especially since Mini parts are so expensive and you can still find a Polo at a scrap yard! In the 5 years I owned the car it had been driven 1500 miles and cost me half a years salary, which is a sobering thought as I am far from being on minimum wage.

	For the grand total of £200 I brought a 149k mile 1997 R reg 999cc Polo L

Currently I am stripping down the car, seeing what work needs doing and parts i need to source

	So far it needs...

 Both rear arches repaired

 New rear valance

underseal stripping off, rusty treating and reapplying

 Various rust patches repairing

 A full respray

replacement carpets and retrimmed front seats

 Engine reconditioning (probably gearbox too)

And probably a whole host of other things....but its a project.

My plan is to keep the car pretty much standard, yes there will be a few modifications and fancys details added to the car along the way. I am a man I like shiny things and power, but at a glance i want it to appear standard.

I will add photos and updates as I make progress.....which will be slow as I work away from home. I am giving myself a year to get it MOT'ed.

So i thought id do a build thread on my polo gti that i bought almost a year ago and This is a work in progress and i don't have an infinite ending wallet so its been on hold for a while tbh but i absolutely love the car and its a shame its just sitting in my garden at the moment but it will get finished i'm determined and have got the skills to do it just not all the tools and money. So anyways i bought the car on the 3rd of June 2019 off my sisters boyfriend who had bought it 4 days prior to me buying it because i fell in love with it instantly and it was on my driveway till 8th of august when i passed my test so it was an incredible first car you can imagine but a month of driving it the gearbox blew up so i went out and bought a new car till i could get the old gal back on the road

	Hi Guys,

	I just bought a sliver 1.6 GTi 6n2. It is a 2000, with 102k on the clock.

I have always liked these when I was younger, and when this one came up at a decent price I couldn't resist!

The car is completely standard, even has the original VW Gamma radio with 6 disc CD changer in the boot. Which still works!

The car looks like it was loved at some point in its life and still appears that way today, though the paint will need a few hours spent on it with a buffer to bring it back to its former glory.

As soon as the weather allows I will get on that.

Buy the way I was looking for the paint code, and couldn't find anything on the labels under bonnet nor in the door jams. Any ideas where I can find this information?

I have had it for all of 2 days, and noticed a sticker in the back window for this website. Figured I'd come in and say "hi" and see if the old own is still on here.

The reg is X979 WBB in sliver with the grey/red number 1 interior.

	Cheers for now

Hi, I'm new to the site but not that new to Polos. My first car was an S reg Polo 6n, but in 2005 I bought a 6n2 - 2001 VW Polo 1.4 16v 100bhp edition. I've had it for 14 years now and loved it every time I've driven or looked at it.

I've recently decided to fix it up a bit cosmetically and mechanically, if need be, so I joined this site for some inspiration and assistance. And to see if there's still love out there for this now 18 year-old car! It has already been a lot of help reading what people have done (and how they've done it) - cheers guys! There's not that many posts recently so I'd thought I'd contribute with my little motor and what I've been doing. It's not very far from stock, but even stock is a great looking car! Comments and suggestions welcomed! 🙂

About 9 months ago I finally got tired of my lack of 21st Century music and the fact that the V had fallen off the front of my Polo 😞

	Aim of the game:

	• Small (low cost) cosmetic changes or fixes - to make my car feel new again or just for the sake of a visual change after having it for 14 years.

	• Mechanical upgrades/refresh - to keep my car running well for as long as possible

Upgraded head unit to Atoto A6. Android head unit for some compatibility with how I actually listen to music these days! Can also use Plex for movies/TV for passengers on long journeys. Plus all the other usual phone>car navigation and stuff 🙂

Only a few other things on my to do list:

	• Paint my callipers red

	• Pair of rear mud flaps

	• Fit remote locking kit

	• Fix rust on rear NS wheel arch

	• Few minor scratches to touch up

	• Possibly refurb wheels as mine have corroded causing slow flats

	• Or maybe just buy new alloys 🙂

	• Possibly front splitter from a GTI (but they're hard to find!)

I've always loved the look of the 6n2 so I'm not looking to do anything too drastic (bodykits etc), but I'd be happy to hear suggestions, or any other general comments. I'll put up some glam shots when I've given it a good wash

She's back on the road! And i did it all myself! After buying her last year March, I only got to drive her for a couple of months, then she didn't respond to the gas pedal any more, I was told to scrap her as it would be too costly to repair, I was gutted as there's only a handful of this model left, I didn't want to sell or even scrap her so she was left on my drive for a year, then I had a hunch and managed to fix her, it cost me a whole £25!!! I since have done lots to her and she passed Mot last week with flying colours! Im so very proud of myself, and so very happy she's back on the road

	But in all seriousness!

It has a sticker for every check engine error. The boot lets in water. My front left tyre is jinxed and will forever have a slow puncture but. It has 4 working doors and a subwoofer that drains the battery if i leave it on overnight.

My plan is to make it work........and preferably tint or block the rear windows so i can hide my shame.

Aswell as replace the...apparently empty shock absorbers...

It spends most of its life doing 40mph down country lanes and im quite surprized how well its done offroad.

My only quibble...is it only has 1...very shit cup holder.

If anyone has a suggestion for modification...useful or just funny im all ears.

Currently my parcel shelf is alpacino

figured i might start a thread on this little project, i got offered a 6n2 for £270 and i cant say no to cheap cars, she was in pretty decent condition , just flaking paint on roof little dents everywhere and the rear bumper was in bad conditon but i didnt care about that when i brought it , the more i cleaned the car the more i fell in love with it and the little imperfection started to become a big problem to me so i though ive allways wanted to own a harliquin so i decided id make one from this 6n2

After owning a breadvan very briefly in 2012 I’m back in a Polo- this time a 6n2 as a daily. Also own a 2015 Audi S3 but the Polo will be my run around/daily car. It’s on coilovers (not looked to see what ones yet) and wolf race alloys too.

So far I need a drivers side manual (wind up) window regulator and new mechanism to open to drivers door from the inside. No massive dramas and I’m very happy with it so far.

Originally I joined as I got a 1.4 16v coupe 6n2 as a backup car. I have a 3.0tdi A6 that I like to tinker with a lot, and still have a ton of electrical issues with it, the most significant being related to a manual to automatic transmission swap... so I do tend to keep it at a shop a lot. Also it did proove not much practical for a daily use.

But as my mother’s 6n2 gave birth to all of its fluids, I decided to give her mine and get something better, as I was already looking at a possible engine swap for the 1.4...

As a result I got a pretty sweet GTI. I did’t expect much. Got it from a dealer, which was already a bad omen , but the car was in a surprisingly good visual condition. It hasn’t been driven since at least an year (January 2017) with less then 7000km done in 2016. I got it on 138 000km, and its last history is from Switzerland from 2013 at 118 000km. It is kinda believable that it could have done only 20 000km in 2014 and 2015, but here rewinding the milage is still very much a thing. Still it looks like being close to that arlt least.

The car had its gearbox repaired while at the dealer. Everything else was in order. Of course for the first several days there were no brakes , until the calipers remembered how to work. I got it from another city, so it wasn’t the smartest idea to bring it home directly after sitting for so long, but it performed flawlessly.

Of course by Murphy’s law, exactly on the next day, I got the ABS lamp on, and a bit after that the Engine check on also. Thse were because of a rear light speed sensor and a misfire in cilinder 1. Alongside the standart service, I changed the spark plugs, the spark leads and the spark coil and the speed sensor. But still occasionally (I think when I sit in traffic) it does log a misfire, which I can’t even register. Will do a compression check next year before installing the LPG system, as nothing else looks suspicious.

The only other issue it had was that the left window didn’t work, while from the driver’s door I could only open the passenger’s windows with both positions of the switch. Also the central locking button on the door could lock the car but couldn’t unlock it. Today I repaired it by fixing a cut wire between the door and the body.

What I plan to do with the car:

	- repaint the red parts - the current paint job is ridiculous and I’m not sure I like that it is not metallic.

	- repaint the calipers - also pretty badly done

	- reupholster the steering wheel with red stiches and reupholster the ceiling

	- update all the speakers (some are torn)

	- get 14” alloys as it came with 15” ones, and my winter tires are 14... Will keep the 15 for the summer

	- soundproofing - that is a must. Not only for better audio, but also for the rare cases where I need to get it on the highway... It really lacks a 6th gear

	- refurbish the headlights and get new blinkers

	- fix the hooks for the rear seats, because, of course, they both tore the moment I tried them

	- at some point I’ll add rear speakrs and an amp

	- as mentioned above - LPG system with lightweight bottle.

I currently own

2x 1.4 MG ZR's (the wife's standard daily and my project pushing 135bhp but mid rebuild)

1x Clio 172 (more love/hate than marmite and as reliable as a chocolate teapot and just shat a piston)

I've had to resort to borrowing an EP3 Type R short term (6 months so far) as neither of my cars are drive able, when my brother in law announced he was scrapping his 6n2.

No real reason for it, just couldn't be bothered to sell it and the mot had expired.

I pretty much ripped his arm off for it thinking I could use it short term and give the Civic back to it's owner.

As she looked when I picked her up wearing 16" Innovate ST 6's and 40mm Spax springs.

Got it home and started checking it over for the MOT.

Rear brakes where shot, really shot.

Like i think they were the originals.

After much headache due to rotten bolts, I got the new discs and pads on.

Brakes are still shot. Turns out the servo hose is cracked and the valve cap is missing.

Deep joy!

So now, it appears I have 3 cars off the road (for the next few days atleast) and i'm still using a borrowed Type R!

So, yea, I'm Levaz, and welcome to my world!
