I'm Back! Ross' GTI

Hi all!

So after some years since owning my last polo I am once again a polo owner! Had a 6n 16v as my first car which I loved and spent too much money on. I am sure the build thread is still on here somewhere. Here is a quick picture of it before I sold it

IMG_8673_zps46df81a7.jpg

Then the urge for more power kicked in so I upgraded to a MK4 Golf GTI which I wish I never sold. Again, spent far to much on this one as well (will see a common theme going on with my cars here)

20160604_154354_zpsmqz76hcr.jpg

Then came the biggest mistake I ever made, moving away from VW. Brought this money pit of an Astra which had nothing but problems. Brought it as I needed a diesel and it was cheap at the time although now I know why it was cheap!

IMG_20170206_092624_117_zpswaixjmz2.jpg

Now as I am moving into london I only need a cheap run around I thought I would get a polo again. This GTI popped up cheap so it was brought this afternoon for £900.

Its got just under 100k on the clock and is in great condition. Got a few bits to sort as with any 16 year old car but overall I am very pleased with it

Going to try not to spend much on this one but I'm sure that wont last long as usual!

Welcome back Rozza, we can't seem to keep away from Polo's! See how long this one last without being modified. 8>)

No we can't, I have always missed my old polo. Did try to find it but its been scrapped unfortunately. Won't be long do doubt, specially as I need to replace the front tires and the wheels are in need of a refurb. Could solve both issues by buying a new set of wheels...

First of the few problems sorted tonight, replaced the 10 year old rubbish stereo that wouldn't get a radio station or play CD's with this lovely £55 headunit from kenwood. Got Aux, usb and bluetooth including a microphone which I ran up the A pillar. Car is booked in to get the warped front disc replaced tomorrow and then its onto a few quick fixes and visual mods at the weekend hopefully (broken the no modification rule in less than a week!)

Need to get my private plates on

Debadge boot and spray VW badges black

Sort sticky drivers window

refurb wheels if I have time

Wrap roof as I have a load of carbon fibre wrap left over from old cars

Lovely looking polo.  Really like the look of the gtis.

Thanks, yes I have always had a soft spot for them and jumped at the chance to buy this one.

Dropped the car off at the garage today to sort the warped disc only to get a call a few hours later saying they couldn't get the new discs on. Did a bit of research and it seems that the car may have had a brake upgrade or something in the past. Hopefully my mechanic can get to the bottom of it so I can get the car back tomorrow. It sounds like it may have been swapped to 280mm setup but if anyone else has any suggestions let me know

Are you sure the new discs you or the garage got weren't just standard 239mm discs? GTIs have 256mm discs as standard.

Ah that could be another option. I did tell them yesterday that the standard brakes are 256mm on a Gti so hopefully they measured what size discs were already on it. They ordered more discs today so I think they have worked it out. It's my dad's mate the mechanic so he won't be ripping me off either haha

Turns out the car does have 280mm brakes. My mechanic couldn't source any so the car has been returned unchanged. Need to find some disc's asap!

Some good news is that most of the stuff I have ordered has arrived so I can get on with sorting the car out this weekend.

Also I may have just brought some lowering springs...

Managed to find some 280mm Disc's last night, so they were ordered along with some Lowering Springs and will hopefully arrive this week so I can get them fitted next weekend

Few of the jobs on my list have been done today. first up I took the drivers door card off to fix the sticky window. Sprayed the whole mechanism with WD40 and it works perfectly!

IMG_20170401_111944_zpssddsrauy.jpg

Got some new floor mats

IMG_20170401_113853_zpsuuryvz0g.jpg

IMG_20170401_113848_zps56z6f4cq.jpg

Finally found a cover for the headlight washer jets so to fill the whole in the front bumper as well. It could do with a respray but will do the job for now.

IMG_20170401_114210_zpsafd8wph3.jpg

Then I set about trying to sort the cloudy front lights. I read online that toothpaste is supposed to work in solving it so gave it a go and it did the job well to my surprise. The drivers side one was a lot worse unfortunately so I tried a bit of t cut on it as well and it improved it but its still not perfect

Here is one side done compared to the untreated one.

IMG_20170401_133442_zpskcts2eze.jpg

whilst the T cut was out I thought I would try and make the scuff on the back bumper a bit more presentable and I think i succeed

After:

IMG_20170401_131009_zps7umofzit.jpg

Also gave the VW badges a quick spray of black paint and Debadged the rear which makes it look so much better!

IMG_20170401_140235_zpsqjetrmdm.jpg

And the last but most important job today

IMG_20170401_114450_zpsgblzsn99.jpg

Started to refurb the wheels today as the weather is good. They are in shocking condition! Took me 3 hours to sand one of them down and even then I still didn't manage to completely get rid of all the corrosion. I've managed to get it to a reasonable condition to paint it and its back on the car now but it was too dark for a picture. now just for the next 3...

Finished spraying up the rest of the wheels today in the lovely sunshine. Car looks a million times better now, got some more centre caps ordered to finish them off as the old ones are knackered. Just need to fit the lowering springs when they arrive and I will be happy. Will get some better pictures up soon!

Also here is a better picture of the freshly painted wheels!

new centre caps are on the wheels to finish them off nicely

IMG_20170409_143523_zpslrz20ta1.jpg

Also the V5 finally came through so that means my private plates can go on the car

IMG_20170409_143530_zpsp5nubytp.jpg

And I finally got time to fit the new front discs now that I managed to source some replacements. Its a shame that the old ones are warped as they are grooved and drilled! Couldnt afford to replace them like for like so will have to make do with the budget ones. Was surprisingly easy to do which was great

Now the newest problem is that whilst out on a test drive after fitting, the Check Engine light came on

Spent this ideal easter sunday fitting the lowering springs I have brought recently. I gave all the Bolts a good spraying of WD40 the night before so none of them put up too much of a fight to get off. Was so easy to fit the springs on a Polo compared to my Golf GTI i had. From start to finish It took maybe about 3 hours for all 4 corners.

Fronts are easy, 3 bolts up top under the bonnet, 2 at the bottom of the strut. Compress the spring and remove the top then simply reverse this with the new spring fitted.

IMG_20170416_125841_zps5xoqb4uz.jpg

IMG_20170416_125850_zpssucdbhni.jpg

IMG_20170416_134424_zpsjjbbmwdg.jpg

And the mess I made in the process of all that

IMG_20170416_141447_zpskfsblrqe.jpg

Front finished

IMG_20170416_144534_zps8h8mk3dw.jpg

Then onto the back, to get to the top mounts you've got to take the back apart to get to them. then its simply the case of undoing it all and remembering what order it all goes back together (definitely forgot so had to work it out) then its just one bolt at the bottom. Compress the spring and remove the top then simply reverse this with the new spring fitted.

IMG_20170416_152102_zps7zcxmipr.jpg

(Ignore the door in the picture)

IMG_20170416_153917_zpslnbpadzo.jpg

IMG_20170416_161810_zpskvbkafdu.jpg

Here is the arch gap before on the back

IMG_20170416_150944_zpsn3hpgrdy.jpg

And after, they are only 30mm springs so not massive drop but enough to make it look much better, once everything is settled it should sit a bit lower as well

IMG_20170416_164336_zpsnkkdhkok.jpg

Finished product, very pleased

  • 1 month later...

Haven't had much time to work on my car for the last month as I have been busy with moving out but I finally got some time today. The Foggy headlights have been annoying me for a while now so I brought this turtle wax headlight restorer and it seems to have done the trick. They are still not perfect but its as good as I am going to get them without paying a professional and I am happy with them.

IMG_20170522_135947_zpsnkx9uz7x.jpg

This is what they looked like before the treatment

IMG_20170522_132408_zpsjmybmpur.jpg

IMG_20170522_132203_zps3lqfcepd.jpg

And afterwards, like I said I am happy with them now so I can move onto the next thing on the list which is getting ready for the MOT in a couple of weeks

Nice clean up on those headlights, looking right as rain!

Is there much to do for the MOT? Lovely badge and grill by the way 8>)

Thanks man, glad the £10 fix worked! Its just the standard grill and badges sprayed black so easy way of making the car look so much better. I think I have a leaking driveshaft that Might need replacing and the tracking still needs to be done from where I lowered the car. Other than that fingers crossed it should be alright

You're telling me - great different for a quick home job! Doesn't sound like too much to scare for the MOT. Best of luck 8>T

  • 2 weeks later...

So the car is booked in for an MOT on monday morning so I set about trying to sort the leaky front driveshaft. I haven't had the time or money to get it changed so I am hoping that cleaning up the area and gluing the tiny hole will do for the MOT ( I know I shouldn't be bodging it but i'm poor at the moment)

IMG-20170603-WA0001_zpsylqvplee.jpg

Also set about sorting the passengers side door card as the top has come loose and gets stuck in the window when it is used. I just used some spray adhesive I had lying around and it has solved the issue

Before

After

IMG_20170603_140341_zps0hsba9lg.jpg

And here is a picture of my car looking a bit sorry for herself at the moment covered in dirt. I will treat her to a wash if she passes the MOT without bankrupting me in process

So great news, picked her up from the MOT this morning where she passed with flying colours! Not even a single advisory which I am very pleased about. Also got the tracking done before the MOT so very happy when driving her home.

As I put some money aside for the MOT just in case she failed it would be rude not to spend it on something else instead now. Just got to decide what on...
