I thought Siemens had them from 1977 as Silicon Carbide and very costly, not as good as the Cree Research version commercialised in 1989. https://www.tu-ilmenau.de/mne-nano/forschung/sic/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cree_Inc. https://www.cree.com/about/history-and-milestones or the 1993 GaN blue that won the Nobel prize..

1993 2f clocks Main beam tell tale

If it's an LED it will be a white one with a filter as the first sucessful Blue LED wasn't produced till 1993
  5. It is a blue LED. I've only removed Mk2 clocks but they only need a Philips screwdriver and fingers to squeeze the speedo clip. Much easier with steering wheel off, but not vital. Maybe the voltage regulator is failing. But I have to ask, why are you using headlights in daylight? Coming out of a dark car park and forgetting to turn them off? Setting off in the early morning?

    high revs with twin 40s

31mm chokes, shorter inlet tract and raised rev limit (7250 cut-off, soft cut from 6750) still feels willing at 6600 on the tacho. Wonder what the AFR was like? Must sort out recording engine speed too. Think over 5 seconds it started at 13 and headed to 11.5. Bigger main air correctors? Was very warm ambient air though.

    What's the difference

The Polo Gt is a normally aspirated engine, the G40 is supercharged, that is the biggest difference.
  9. The main beam tell-tale on my dash clocks has gone seriously dim. I can't see the blue light at all in the daytime, so I have sometimes no idea if the main or dipped beam is operating. Also my dash clocks sit low, so the odometer trip reset hits the top of the steering column cowling. The haynes manual has some guidance on how to remove the clocks. Is it possible to use a coathanger instead of the tool it mentions? Does the steering wheel have to come off? Is the bulb easy to replace? Would it be straightforward to use an LED instead?
  10. I am in the process of tidying up my radio wiring harness. It's been butchered over the years and now is a lot tidier. I can't identify one wire. It's blue and white in colour and is connected to pin 10 of a 12 pin plug (with the rest of the radio power feeds). Is this the illumination feed for the car radio? If so then it should be connected to the orange wire of the ISO connector? There is also an unconnected small brown plug with a blue/white wire buried next to the 12 pin plug. Is this the illumination feed for an unconnected switch? (say some optional extra like heated front seats)

    What's the difference

Hi people This has probably been covered on here before but what is the difference between a G40 polo and gt polo?

    Double-din centre console conversion

It's been like 2 years since I started this project and I gave up, just didn't fit. But now I have actually managed to find a way for it to work, and it is less of a ball ache than my original idea 😂
  14. Oh, wow, that actually looks really cool! I hope it stays for a long time :) I completely forgot about this, thanks for the tag, got an email just now as a notification...
  15. Finally got around to doing this... following @Vedad1944 suggestion. With Armour products Over n Over letter stencils for glass engraving, salty water, car battery, croc clip, q-tip.

    020 4speed gearbox on MK2

I have always wondered, but cannot find the info on it - what are the differences from the golf mk4 1.6 16v and the polo 1.6 16v engine? Where does the power difference come from? I have seen something about the inlet manifold and throttle body being a restriction on the golf lump. Maybe the cam is different as well? There is also vvt on the polo engine, iirc

    020 4speed gearbox on MK2

The mk2f has numbers and mine raises up to just a bit under the 110°c mark. When doing 60mph then it sits on just about 90. Not highly worried, but I would like it to switch on at a lower temperature. Maybe should add a two speed switch and two low profile fans with the wide radiator, when I'll go 16v

Fan comes on at high thermostat housing temp - but the switch is 95 coolant temp half way down the rad. I'll try and measure the block temp when my fan comes on, there are no numbers on my dash temperature light but needle usually sits just to left of the warning LED - it's a bit to right of that, when it activates, which is not very often. Stop/start queueing after fast motorway journey.

Yeah, my fan switches on though, but at high temp. It was with the oem one and the same exact behaviour with the replacement (new, but was not a high grade). Edit: and the same exact behaviour with the 1.6 as 1.05. and same exact between two gauges - i changed my clock one to a tacho one

Radiator fan switch turns on at 84 or 95 or both for 2 speed fan

The rad itself weighs claimed 3.5kg which is nothing, with the coolant filled it might weigh more. I am thinking about moving the generator to the back of the engine as well, and the battery to boot. If I would have to prepare for an actual 1600cc category for a rally, I would have to increase the weight anyways as it possibly wouldn't meet the minimum requirements. The radiator weight might be possible to offset with a stainless header. I already have the 80c thermostat, but my fan doesn't kick on till it shows about 110°c on the dash. Have changed the switch, the pump, got a fresh radiator, the sensors, so i dont know what's up with that. Also, I would love to switch to an electric water pump, but would have to create my own system to power it on different variables and have different modes. I could use the newer bmw pumps and code an arduino or a raspberry to power it. Thought behind it - for daily driving I could run it at lower constant power and possibly get more mpg's, as the bmw pump might be more efficient and I've heard about belt drive being more inefficient than electric driven pumps. Also, can place the pump almost anywhere you want, and if you do a dragrace, you can keep it at full power while you coast to the start line and can program it to run for a minute or two after engine switch off

Trying to think if there any downsides to bigger rad. Might make no difference with 1.6 engine but rad and starter on the 020 box is more weight in front of wheels. Suppose a Golf GTI had no problems with that. Maybe there's more downforce to keep the traction and that outweighs the extra mass to guide around corners. Actually the G-lader and intercooler is mass in front of the wheels, so it can't be bad - even if it is a bolt-on, right. Pump has a bit more work do more resistance through tiny passages - so there's increased parasitic loss. Not noticeable though, like 0.5hp at full power? Bigger rad is probably similar weight as airflow-cooled oil-cooler and pipes. The G40 boys can't use wide rad as the G is in the way. 80c thermostat?

It is decently sized, as far as I find, it's the 525x322x32mm one, which was mentioned by @dvderlm But I am very interested in the 700mm now, and it's cheap as well

    020 4speed gearbox on MK2

The 1.4 diesel radiator is pretty big, thicker than a petrol one, and was still fairly easy to find last time I looked into it.
  25. Last week
  26. i know what happened then. there is two small 12-13mm plastic tubes on either side of the carbs. the slide mechanism is sensitive to the air passing through these. ive channelled these tubes into the airbox because they need to have the same air pressure passing through them as what's in the airbox. if you leave these out of the airbox then the slides don't go up. i think when the airbox has a leak, it must affect the pressure somehow causing it all to f*** up lol

What Did You Do To Your Polo Today?

Measured the radiator. Upped the rev limit cut-off to 7250rpm.
  28. Above normally is for fixed venturi. If it changed how the slide moved the mechanism it could go richer. Bike slide carbs have one more variable - the needle taper curve.
  29. right so when the flange popped out abit . it must have sucked warm air from the engine bay and disturbed the air flow to make it richer at light throttle. it,s a carb so fuel would be determined by the air anyway. hmmmmmm
