  1. Joined the hard shoulder club yesterday, first time i've ever broken down on a motorway which was an experience... Safely managed to get out of trouble and after a very cold hour at the side of the road managed to get put on the back of a truck and the polo is back on my drive now. We were cruising at 60 and all of a sudden I noticed our speed dropping - no jolt or judder, nothing to suggest any sudden change apart from the revs and the speed needles dropping. Pumped the gas and the revs didn't change so I popped the hazards on. Warning lights (oil and battery lights) came on. Pump
  2. I don't know if this should be asked in "Electric" or "Engine" topic but I'll try here... I have 2 engines (MH 1.3 55hp carb), one is from a mk2 (1991-03) and the other from a mk2f (1992-03). I'm a bit confused in matching the model of the alternator pulley (aka v-belt pulley) and alternator/generator (didn't notice the alternators references but I will). I have no clue if the previous owners used the right alternator model. How do I choose the pulley depending on the alternator I have or want to use ? The mk2f v-belt pulley has a reference of VW 030 105 255E with an ou
  3. Hi, I bought my first car, a VW Polo 9n (2009) in early 2020 - so very much a newbie to cars. I fitted a new radio in July of that year (incorrectly at first, which led to a flat battery from radio being left on, but later sorted it so it turned off when I switched off ignition). It may not be linked but, a month or two later I started experiencing problems with ABS warning light turning on and power steering failing. This was very intermittent and only seemed to happen when driving in traffic, with phone plugged in and radio on etc. Garage immediately said it was the alternator, b
  4. My MK2 polo Fox(1043) with the standard Dashboard(no rev counter/clock and trip) has an intermittent fault with the Alternator warning light not illuminating when the ignition is switched on. Giving the top of the dash a thump brings it back on, so that tells me it’s not an alternator fault. is this a common fault and is it fixable? I’m good with a soldering iron if it’s likely to be dry joints. The worry is that without the warning light lit to start with the battery won’t charge, as I believe it needs the lamp lit to ‘excite’ the alternator into action.
  5. The alternator is not charging the battery in my coupe S with a GT engine. When I bought the engine, the seller gave me a brand new alternator (9AR2896G). The mount will need drilled out or the mount itself slaved to suit the top bolt diameter. That's not a problem but the new alternator has a connection which should have a 3 pin plug on one side and a separate spade connector (B+) on the other. Any help with this would be much appreciated. This car is staring to do my head in!
