  1. Hi guys, I picked up a Mk2 breadvan the other day. From what i gather from the guy I bought it off it'd been off the road for a little bit. I looked underneath today and there was a little puddle and from what I can see and have researched it is the O-ring on the thermostat housing that is coming from the engine. I've found two different size O-rings on parts websites but neither say which size fits the one I want. One has an inner diameter of 43mm and a thickness of 3mm, the other is an inner diameter of 50mm and a thickness of 4mm. I'd rather not take her apart to find out because the leak isn't that bad right now so if anybody knows what size I'm looking for that would be great. I've attached an image of the system, the blue circle is where its leaking from. And if anyone knows how difficult it is to do this that would be great too. Or even if anybody reckons I'm completely off with what's wrong that would be great too. Thanks, Dan

I have a 2001 Polo GTI 6n2 with an issue with the cooling system, namely the car takes ages to get up to temperature, both the top and lower hoses from the radiator are at the same temperature, so I assume that the coolant is constantly flowing through the radiator and therefore only ever gets up to temperature when in traffic, at which point the temperature gauge rises and the fan will come on as expected The car has had a new thermostat however from reading online it seems that the issue is with the thermostat housing, does this sound correct? I can get a new thermostat housing (which includes the thermostat and temp sensor) or would I be better off just getting a second hand one and buying a new seal? Also I was going to have a go at replacing it myself, where can I find out what the correct torque figures are? Many thanks in advance
  3. I'm currently running my engine without a thermostat. This doesn't seem to bother the car in any way but I was just wondering if there's anything I should know. Basically the car seemed to randomly get hot a few times for no reason and I suspected a sticking thermostat. The fan works fine and comes on when it should. It's a 1.0 engine with around 50000 miles and most of it looks like it's hardly ever been changed or tampered with so I took the thermostat out and replaced the small amount of lost coolant with a substance called "water" that seems to do the trick, and I have been running it like that for a couple of months without any problems. And yes I will probably fix it properly at some point but for now the car seems quite happy and It's not winter so I'm in no need of a strong heater at the moment. The temperature reads at the lowest end of the guage most of the time and only ever creeps up to almost normal if the car is stuck for ages in heavy traffic on a hot day but even then the temperature still doesn't seem to get high enough to even trigger the fan so I've not been too concerned. However, if the car was still like this at MOT time would the cooler running temperature possibly cause a fail on emissions or does the ECU still sort that out even at low running temperature?
  4. Just made an account to ask this question as I thought it’d be the best place to ask! Possibly a slightly daft question... For any experts on the older engines. I have an 86 1.3 mh block golf (not a polo I know but I’ve been told this is the best spot for 1.3 info) chased down overheating issues to leaking and warped thermostat housing/ cover/ elbow thing. Installed a new housing elbow which is quickly warping again and going back to the shape of the one that wouldn’t seal right. just to make sure I’ve got the right gear for the job which thermostat and seal should I be using? I’ve seen some which have a seal around the edge of the thermostat that look like they have a groove that the outer edge of the thermostat sits in. And I’ve seen some that say to just use the o ring on the thermostat housing with none for the ‘stat itself. Reasonsbly new to this so any help would be appreciated!
  5. Hey polo people. Hope you're all very well indeed. 1983, 1043cc breadvan. Just spent a weekend in Cornwall after having my cooling system fixed up. I had no issues while down there but i did on the journey back. I let some pressure out of the radiator, had the heaters going full blast, even took the splitter section off the air cleaner. Still seemed to run very hot. I did pull in at one point on the A38, when i opened the bonnet, expected the fan to be going but it wasn't. It did kick in for about 5 seconds but that was it. I'm looking for some advice on the thermostat. Someone has suggested i just take the whole thing out and leave it out to help the coolant flow better. Can anyone recommend whether this is a good shout or not? Looking to flush system again as it looks like rusty water again. Any other advice or cooling tips would be gratefully recieved.   6. So after finally sourcing a bottom hose and fitting it I started getting a leak from my brand new thermostat housing. Between the thermostat housing and the cover. Upon trying to get it up to the torque in the Haynes (which I thought was the problem because I'd struggled to fit my wrench down there) it wasn't tightening just spinning. This is never good news. I had to saw the bolts off, not happy given the main housing was new. Anyway I've ordered a new housing and top cover (I used an old top cover before) but I'm worried that I might do the same thing again. Anyone know what bolts I should use/ what torque they're supposed to be? This cooling system has been giving me so much grief I'm in a right mind to throw in the towel and get an air-cooled VAZ lol
