Clutch problems HH engine with 085 5 speed gearbox
Lovejoy posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
Please could someone offer some advice on the problem with my clutch. I have a HH in a mk1 Derby with an 085 gearbox. The engine and 'box were in a mk2 polo saloon I bought, I've now put these in my mk1, before doing so I fitted a new 180mm LUK clutch (I really should have left it alone!), the release bearing that came with the kit didn't connect to the release shaft so I reused the old one. I finally got the car running a few weeks ago and i moved it a few feet forward and reverse and it was ok. Then the next time I came to use it it wouldn't go into gear, the cable was correctly adjusted and -
gearbox Some gearbox questions for my 6N2 GTI
rickvipe posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
Hello everyone. It's been a while since last time I came here looking for solutions for my 2000 6N2 GTI gearbox. Basically, at the moment I have my Polo at the mechanic for an engine rebuild, I also decided to take apart the gearbox that I'm currently running at, a 085 DKG gearbox from a 1.0 6n as I made a little crack in the housing near to the mount days before the rebuild. The gearbox is very short ratio, it is fun in the mountains but quite annoying on motorways. So I thought about changing the final drive of the actual box to a diff/ pinion from a 1.4 engine, so it can get a little bi -
Hi guys. im sure this has be asked before. I’m in the process of building a gf engine and want a 5 speed box for it. What would be the best option for this application. thanks

Hi, Does anyone know if the 085 transmissions (in this specific case, it's on a Mk2 with a 2G engine) ever came with a digital speed sensor? I want to get a digital speedo from one of these boxes for a project I'm working on. I think they were used in Mk3s and Mk4s as well, right? I'm having trouble finding info on them.

The shifting on my mk2f has always been a bit rubbish - my first drive home in it I was pulling out of junctions in 3rd like a lunatic thinking I was in 1st and something was terribly wrong - turned out I needed to 'twist' the sifter counter-clockwise to get it to plonk into 1st. 1st to 2nd requires a lot more force than between other gears which is a bit of a pain jumping out on junctions and roundabouts. Got used to it and didn't think much of it but recently re-reading some other shifting queries I started to wonder if it doesn't need some new bushings etc. I guess the question

I got it in my head that I need to check the gearbox oil. I know that the box is getting tired, but I thought it might be a sensible thing to do. Looking at haynes, there is not a lot of information on how to do this. Is this even a sensible thing to do? I've noticed that there's a plastic plug that is very loosely covering a hole. It's on the top-front of the gearbox/clutch housing. What is this for? https://imgur.com/a/r8ExSnc

Hi, I wanted to ask how much torque will gearbox hold up reliably? Thinking about more power, but people are telling me the gearbox will fall apart, hence the question. Are there any ways to increase the torque handling capability?

Gearbox selector seal replacement - bush too?
zob posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
So I'm (thankfully) down to just the selector shaft seal leak on my '93 Polo now and want to have a crack at replacing it next week. I've got an OEM seal and 3l of oil - do i need a replacement bush as well? One of these guys? https://www.vwheritage.com/001301209-guide-bush-for-gearbox-selector-rod-vw-spare -
Hi, I recently replaced my selector shaft seal, and just now noticed that I've broken the new one in the installation process. I was wondering if the part where the shaft seats, like an aluminium tube, is interchangable, because I think I may have damaged it in the removal process and if there's a part number available.
