  1. hello i have a question about gearbox oil leak on a 1.4 tdi polo 9n. Oil is not leaking massively but i can see small drop of oil sitting on bolt where VW logo is. Picture attached. This VW plate is held by 2 bolts. I think it is leaking from the plate and siting on the bolt as thats where gearbox is wet. Is it possible to remove this vw plate, resealing it without moving any internal parts or is this plate holding something internally? Thank you.

  3. Has anyone used a tuning chip on a 1.4 8v 6n (AEX)? There’s one advertised online for about £50 and states a gain of 6-8bhp with improved fuel economy, less flat spots etc. Trying to figure out if this is snake oil or will genuinely get a bit more fun out of my little engine. any thoughts?
  4. anybody know anything on engine code 'bky' (its a 1.4) ive been told its 75horse and 16v is this true? also could i make it a bit more responsive and torque-y easily
  5. Decided to have a crack at replacing the sensor as it seems like a 2 min job, however being a complete noob, my brain was frazzled after opening the engine cover. Is the green thing in the photo the sensor? Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

    VW Polo 6N 1.4 8v Open Air

Hey guys, So here is my VW Polo 6N 1.4 8v Open Air with 60 hp from November 1996. The car recently have been painted and the engine all rebuilt, the car is pretty much brand new ! Now I'm focusing in the interior, specially the roof. I have leak on the sunroof that is driving me mad ! I've been trying to fix it for the last 4 years... I hope you guys appreciate the car as much as I do ! Cheers !
  7. Greeting to everyone, For those who are familiar with this or already done this installation, I have a polo 2007 9n3 S and it does not come equipped with remote locking features. I am looking to install this soon as I constantly scratch my cars paint and is annoying at times. After doing some research it seems like the oem installation looks the most straightforward, Any help would be much appreciated.

    Should I scrap it? (2001 1.4 TDI)

Hi all, I have an old VW Polo 1.4 TDI (2001) that's been sitting unused for over 3 years now (I know.. life just got a bit crazy). The reason I didn't sell it the moment I got a new car is : - There was an intermittent starting issue which I spent a fair bit of money getting looked at but it never got fixed. Eventually the MOT guy said it's probably the fuel pump relay as he's seen it before with these cars. There was an intermittent indicator stalk issue where smoke would come out of it! Again, it was looked at but never fixed.. I couldn't sell it in good conscience like that. What if it caught on fire and someone got hurt! I'd still feel guilty even if I explained the problem on sale. Annoyingly I did prep it for sale just before I left it to rot: I put on a new tyre, and a new exhaust, and cleaned it up. Now it has the usual problems associated with being left.. It's gone a little bit mouldy here and there inside, moss on the windows, and the brakes look a bit rusty. I have a few choices from what I can tell : - 1) There's a guy that keeps knocking at my door from "MC Motors", who has offered me £100 for it. He just wants to cut it up and scrap it. 2) Replace the battery, get the engine going and advertise it for sale with the problems listed. 3) Replace the battery, get the engine going, pump the tyres up and try and get the 2 issues fixed, then put it up for sale. 4) Just try and sell as it, either on eBay or the classifieds here. I really am not sure what to do. A part of me wants to just take the £100 and be done with it, but I know the engine works and it might make a nice little run about for someone, and I could perhaps earn a bit more from it... Though I might be deluded The frustrating thing is I know with a bit of TLC it could be a nice car - the body work is fine, and it never really had any other problems while it was in regular use. I did try and jump start it recently off of my car, but it wouldn't turn over! I was told it is probably because the VW's battery is knackered and sapping the power, also my new car is petrol and I think the battery doesn't have as much kick as a battery for a diesel..? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm in Leicester if anyone wants to take a look.
  9. Where to start??? (i'll make it as short as possible) Noise when idling which goes away once clutch is depressed.. After much research possibly two culprits; 1. release bearing. 2. input shaft bearing. Took gearbox out to GEARBOX SPECIALIST who gave it a external examine (spinning & listening to the moving parts) Advised by said specialist to change clutch as it could be just that and it may be more cost effective as, if he opens it up and finds nothing it'll cost, popped new clutch it, got gearbox on (replaced gear oil) started car, noise still there but a little quieter (a little). So new clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, release fork, gear oil. ***Not fixed** input shaft bearing guys? I don't wanna take the gearbox off again if it isn't that So noise at idle, clutch down = no noise Has anyone had a similar issue? p.s I have a spare clutch now
  10. hey polo peeps!! I've fitted 6n2 GTI hubs onto my 6n2 1.4 8v and now the wheels are toed in massively ! the hole for the track rod end to go into is 10mm closer to the steering rack than the 1.4 hubs and I've now been 2 weeks without my only car trying to figure it out. so far the only solution myself and the mechanic at the garage doing it while I'm at work have is to put threads further up the track rod and chop the ends off to make it fit but surely there's something were missing ? some part that needs changing???? I'm at a loss and I want my car back from what shouldve been a 20 minute job ? anybhelo appreciated- we've checked ball joints, track rod ends, checking wishbones soon but everything seems to be the same !!!
  11. Hi, I'm after some pointers on why our 1999 1.4 6N1 Auto engine wont start. It initially stalled when my daughter was reversing off her drive. Neither she, nor the Green Flag callout could jump start it, and in the process, the starter motor was burnt out. I have now replaced the starter, but have not yet managed to get the car running. It spins over OK with the new starter, but does not fell like it wants to run. The ignition side seems OK, as I have checked that each plug is sparking, however I'm not sure how to check if fuel is getting through to the fuel rail. or if the fuel pump is running OK. Any thoughts on how to check these, as it's not really covered within the Haynes manual? Also, anything else I should check? Any help appreciated - Many thanks.
  12. Hi all, I was hoping my first thread to be me starting with my Polo project, but that needs to wait until I fix my other Polo, for which I need a bit of help as a quick search didn't pan out :( Basically the troublesome Polo has issues with cold start. It starts and cuts off almost immediately. After 5 minutes of struggle to rev it, it manages to stay on, and after a while (as it warms up), there is no problem with starting it again... Starting it directly on LPG also has no issues. So generally I though the petrol pump was bust, but I checked with another one, and there is no difference. The only error it has is about the lambda sensor. It had it way before any issues where presented. At some point the catalytic converter was also removed. The throttle body is also clean and working properly. So as I have another 6n2 Polo with the same engine, I wanted to swap the lambda sensors and check if it would change anything. We only managed to swap the MAP sensors and make sure it is not from them, as the lambda sensors apparently are different. So the question at the moment is why are they different? The troublesome Polo is using a square plug sensor, where the other one is using the way cheaper flat plug sensor :) If I get a flat one for the troublesome Polo and just rewire the plug will it work, as this is normally done with other vehicles, using universal lambda sensors with the existing original wiring?
  13. Hey guys! Winter is coming and I don't really plan to need my Polo that much Thus I'm thinking to invest some time in tinkering with it. I will soon start a build thread for it, as I initially got it just for a backup car, but now I want to "play" with it . Before that thou, I wanted to ask some questions, about things that I'm not fully clear on I do have some power issues with the car. The clutch cable and the clutch itself were garbage when I got the car, and I fixed them, but the shop didn't do a good job with the clutch cable and I'll need to replace it again - the clutch pedal is very heavy, noisy, sticks often and doesn't release smoothly. Still when I compare the car to my brother's Polo (same engine but AUA), there is very noticeable difference in how the car accelerates and how much easier and quicker it revs - it did also have clutch and cable changed at about the same time. It is good to mention that the AUA Polo hasn't seen proper maintenance in about 3-4 years, while in the past 2 years it was running with a faulty head - losing a lot of oil and coolant regularly. Still after a simple head gasket change, clutch and cable it runs times better than the AHW Polo that seemingly doesn't have anything wrong with it... Both Polos have their Cats removed, where for the AHW I have a whole new exhaust, except the manifold. So, either way I do plan to service the engine of the AHW Polo. And I do have the bold idea of trying to do it myself, mostly as a challenge What I want to do: 1. Service the head: - new set of inlet and exhaust valves - new valve seals - polish on the head and the valve beds - outsource - new gasket 2. Block - probably just cleaning the cylinders and changing the rings 3. Timing belt - belt, pulleys, water pump, etc. Most of the things above are fairly well documented, and I shouldn't find it very hard to do, but I do plan on upgrading the engine in the future at two-three stages, and wanted to know if I should plan ahead, if I'm opening the head Stage 1 - GTI upgrade I already have inlet and exhaust manifolds + throttle body from a GTI. I do plan of adding them after servicing the engine. And as far as I know I will need to remap the ECU for the new throttle body Question 1: Should I even bother with trying to remap the ECU myself, when the change is only the throttle body. An ECU tool is fairly cheap and I think it should be a nice entry level job At a later stage I might go for the supercharging fun, but wanted to ask about the engine mods that I see being done around it - fast road camshafts, decompression plates, bigger valves, etc. Question 2: Should these things be done to the engine only when adding the supercharger, or they can be done earlier? - are these the cams I should be looking for? - can somebody quote me which bigger valves are being used in such a set up - would a CLK W208 supercharger do the trick? Question 3: If I decide not to go for airflow mods, should I just add better cam shafts to the GTI mod and call it a day? Do the new cam shaft (either from a 101hp 1.4 16v or a fast road one) require a remap? Note: I was thinking about an engine swap, but I decided to play with this engine. I do have a bigger engine car and I am not really looking to make this Polo be something crazy.

    6n2 1.4 TDI

Well after owning my mk2 polo for 3 years I've decided to move on and bought myself a 6n2 1.4 tdi SE and it's green, any advise and common issues with these cars?,m
  19. Damian Otto

    Got myself another 6n!

Hi Guys Haven't done a build thread before so if its a bit all over place im sorry. So bought this about 2 weeks ago now. Polo 6n 1.4 8v in red, had 2 owners since new and has full service history, 85000 miles and not to bad condition. now i had bought a 6n a little while ago to break for parts bought for £200 and manged to get off it - 6n2 gti wheels with 4 good tyres - coilovers -Tinted rear lights -clear side lights - smoked side indicators - and a few other random bits for another project of mine so all in all money well spent, ended up making £100 on the car and still manged to keep all the parts above I also managed to get hold of a set of Stuttgart wheel that i had been looking for ages for at a really good price, so had quite a few things already to get me started. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So anyway back to the car, so bought the car like this at 12 on Saturday Got to have a quick look back then 5 hours later after fitting everything i had it looked like this Happy with everything so far but needed more, a lot more! Had a few problems with the rear rubbing like a bitch so had to go back to the drawing board. Ended up finding so 16v bumpers, front, rear and spoiler all for £50 but needed some serious TLC as the paint was F$$cked. Managed to get the back and fitted the rear one which ended up going on like a dream no issues what so ever. While i had the rear up i thought ill add a little camber not to much (will add better pics soon) Painted it up just roughly because car is getting completely re sprayed soon just didn't want to drive round with a grey bumper. (Again more pics to be added shortly) Now what happened next took me by surprise....... to be continued
  20. Hi I recently brought a 6n2 1.4 tdi polo, had massive problems with starting the car, turns out it was the battery as it was only 40ah battery! So I got that replaced and everything was fine, but recently it's doing the same, it just cranks over fast but doesn't fire, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't or it starts then dies about 2 seconds later and flashes up a battery light icon, I changed the fuel filter when I done the battery, any ideas what could be causing this? Thank you
  21. Hi there wanted to make my little polo quicker and was wondering if a 1.6 GTI head would work or not Cheers Jake
  22. Hi guys was wondering if any of you have experienced this problem? 9n 1.4 16v with an auto box 2003, the car starts fine and seems to run ok until it gets to about 60 degrees ish and it will just cut out. When it cuts out it is very sudden, not like it's running out of fuel it will just die and then won't fire up again straight away. If you try and start it straight away it will flood, you can start it again but have to wait about 5 minutes. It's almost like an ignition cut but have checked that it has spark straight away from it cutting out and it did. Any help will be much appreciated. thanks.
  23. Hi guys, I am from TUNISIA, I bought a 2001 6N2 1.4MPI it has 65hp witch is not even close enough power. sadly in TUNISIA we don't have much to choose in the used market 1.0MPI (Tunisian specs: no air bags no abs...nothing maybe AC) so I can only engine swap it.... then again there are no 1.416V breaking to buy from so I turned my head to the only available 1.416V VW relative the MK4 GOLF. So my question is do the 1.416V unit +transmission from the GOLF MK4 drop in straight (with ECU and wiring loom) if so do the GOLF's engine mounts suffice if not what exactly should I consider
  24. Hi everyone, in short- i have an aua code 16v engine that currently has a torque converter on as it was taken from an auto, am i able to just swap that to a flywheel and clutch or are there differences in the end of the crank? Any help appreciated, George

    Options restoring 6n2 1.4

Hey guys, long story short i bought my first car back to save it from going to the scrap for £100! W reg 1.4 6n2 with now over 100K on the clock and little wrong with it in all fairness except its been sat for a while! Want to get it road legal and tidy as possible before deciding whether to make it a track day car or keep it as mint as possible as a second car, maybe in the hope it is worth some money in 30 years time! I plan to do as much as possible myself but will be learning as i go! Anyway i have a ton of things i'm not sure on so any advice or answers are appreciated! I 'think' it is 16v on the basis that i'm sure i have seen a document which says it is the 75bhp version.. Anyway i can check this and what options does it give me for upgrading in the engine bay (i know i'm not going to see decent returns on maps, looking more fur just a decent induction kit probably) Currently doesn't start as the battery is dead, i have jumped it and ran it for 20mins but have to keep the revs up and as soon as you let them drop it idles for a couple of minutes and dies again, needing a jump to start, besides battery and alternator are there any other things i should check? Im going to get a cheap set of coilovers and want to refresh as much of the suspension, hubs and brakes as possible, i have seen people upgrade to the Gti hubs, are these a straight swap and where else can i go down this line? Also, which parts of the suspension should i refresh whilst changing all of this? As far as chasis stiffening what options do i have? Been looking for a rear strut (the one that goes in the boot when the rear is stripped out) but cant find one for my model? When i get the battery sorted im going to give it a good clean and service, sparks, filters, oil i am fine with, is it easy enough to change injectors and can i fit bigger injectors for better power? What else can i upgrade/refresh whilst doing this? Any other opinions/advice/comments welcome! Cheers!
