  1. I am sure I will get some good advice & help regarding my mother in laws, 2008 VW Polo 1.4, 6 speed Automatic. She bought the car a few months ago (September) after her husband passed away & his Motability car was returned, but she hates manual cars, so she had to have an automatic. The car was high mileage (134,000 miles) but I know VW are supposed to be good strong cars, so we thought it would be worth looking at. The test drive of the car went fine, the car drove well, & pulled through the gears ok & my brother in law checked everywhere else & all looked good. But just before christmas I was told that the car was struggling with power delivery & struggling to get in to 5th gear, I was also told that there was an engine management light on, which showed as 'P0420', the O2 sensor bank 1. So we replaced the sensor, eventually, after having 3 different ones sent out from different suppliers, but she decided in the end to just go get one from VW, which was fitted yesterday. However, even after having the new sensor fitted, the car is still having power issues, I have just tried it for the first time, as my brother in law normally drives it, but he failed to give me any update regarding its performance. The car started ok, but you could tell it had not been driven for several weeks, as the brakes seemed frozen (it's been cold up here) & the heater was a bit noisy until I ran it faster.....but getting back to the driving.....I put the car in drive & headed out of the street & the car did seem sluggish & struggled to change gears in automatic drive mode, it felt like it did not want to go beyond 3rd/4th gear, even while it seemed to have a lot of revs as the engine sounded noisy. So I tried for a few minutes to see if it would improve, but it would not, so I thought I'd make sure the gears themselves were ok & put it in to manual mode, which did seem to help the car. However, even though I could change gears ok, there still seemed to be no pull & the car struggled to get up to 30mph going up a slight hill, & just got to around 50mph going downhill, again while still in manual mode, but just testing all gears changed ok so went up to 6th, they also went down by themselves as I was braking. So I am hoping that someone on here might be able to give me an idea of what is causing these issues, I must add, that my brother in law did have a look at the transmission fluid & he said it looked black, but never said if it was thick or thin consistency, but this had us wondering if it could be a transmission issue, though apparently the manual says it should never need changing (I personally doubt that) as we know it should not be black. There is one other slight issue, being that the rev counter sometimes goes straight beyond max & stays there so does not work, but then again sometimes it works fine, but I read somewhere about a possible fault at a connection with the alternator, though I don't know for certain if that is correct, so if you know what could cause that & have a cure, again I'd be grateful for the advice. So is there anyone who can offer any advice, as the car cannot be used properly until this issue is sorted. Any help or advice would be very gratefully appreciated & I give Thanks in advance for any help. I hope this all makes sense. Thanks for looking.
  2. The fellah who did all of the work on my Polo just got "left" a lovely looking X reg Golf. It's a 1.4 8v (I think) and I was just wondering about the engine code. Such a pity but like so many of these cars they are just being sent for scrap. No rust on the body panels, ( I really like the headlight cluster) interior is spot on and it starts on the button BUT.... there is rust underneath! He could easily weld it and and get an MOT but as he says - who would buy it from him? No one. I guess. Anyway - back to my question - what would the engine code be - can anyone help? Thanks

  5. Hi - you may have seen previous posts where I replaced the cat with a new one after a theft. We got a "new" car for my girlfriend and the Polo is now sitting SORNed at my friend's place in Liskeard. Car has a new clutch and is I think in fair to good condition. It was in daily use till we just SORNed it in favour of a newer car. Reg is X502 YMV and is MOTd till 22 November. This must be sold as spares and repairs only but as above has a new LUK clutch and a cat from I think around April. I do obviously have the option of keeping it and re-MOTing and running it locally but parking space is at a premium. The picture is from about 3 years back I think when we took it off steel wheels and put it on 14" alloys. No major dents or dings but a few bumper scratches I guess. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like but again I will stress - "Spares and Repairs" despite being a runner with MOT. Just to anticipate any questions - no I won't be breaking this I am afraid. It's on my friend's property and I can't be stripping a car down there. Thanks for looking 🙂
  6. Hi all, new member here and first time post My engine light has been on for some time and I know it is my lambda sensor as I've had it scanned and it's the pre-cat sensor needs replacing. That's fine however I've been looking for a replacement part and maybe being slightly stupid here I can't work out what one I need. I know my engine code is BBY and I know I need the pre-cat sensor. Looking online is confusing me as there's so many to choose from plus fitment options such as 6 poles, 4 poles, however many mm. I don't just want to buy one thinking it's right then I've gone and got the wrong one. If someone could simply tell me what is the correct one to purchase for a 1.4 16v 75bhp 2003 BBY engine polo I would truly appreciate it Many thanks in advance Emma
  7. Hi! Just changed the spark plugs today, and the engine stutters every now and then - how do i find the correct gap measure for the specific engine to fix this? As mentioned above, it's a 1.4 8v, (not the 16v).
  8. As title, title after 1.4 16v AFH cylinder head Hope someone can help
  9. 2006 (06) 1.4 SE 75 VW Polo Was driving down the dual carriageway yesterday when ABS and EH Power Steering warning lights came on, along with handbrake warning light beeping and flashing at me. Speedo also suddenly dropped to 0mph. Pulled over and restarted engine which caused all 3 warning lights to go away, only to reappear 5-10 minutes later mid-driving. This happened 3 times over an hour journey. Engine feels fine when it happens. Wondering if anyone had any ideas what could be going on or has had this combination of warning lights before? Any ideas appreciated as planning a long journey after new year's.. Cheers

Hello! Been a while since I bothered to post on any car forum's or blog anything or really interact with the world online but thats another story , figured I'd stick a post on here and see what I get back. Bought this little mk2 Saloon about 2 year ago and drove it 400 odd mile in the middle of the night with out really looking at it or knowing much about the car - was told some stuff about it which I allways take with a pinch of salt but this time turned out to be true - which is/was nice! First photo is what It looked like when I got it home. Was told, and now can confirm - 1.4 ABD engine, high lift cam, and GT injection set up with a 4 branch and chipped ECU to raise the rev limiter. Since I've had it Iv swapped out the shocks front and rear - rebuilt most the ignition system , replaced quite a bit of the wiring and most the sensors on it. Just had the passenger sill and rear arch replaced and have the drivers rear arch to do new. Ally rad and a few other odd's n sods like new roof lining, some sound deadening, exhaust parts and new (ish) black door cards all round.
