  1. I've been given a MK3 golf with a 1.4 abd that I plan on putting into my mk2f that's currently got a 4 speed box so will need a 5 speed. Whats the best box too run?
  2. I can remember being told by my insurers that in the case of an engine swap declaration, the new price is calulated according to the donor car. So my question is: if I were to swap say from a 1.3 3F GT to a 1.4 ABD, might the insurance decrease as the 1.4 Golf is presumably cheaper to insure than a GT (don't know if it is actually cheaper - just in theory)? Or, is there a 'tax' added for the extra perceived risk of an engine conversion? Has anybody ended up with cheaper insurance despite using a larger engine - say specifically a 3F to an ABD? Or did it increase?
  3. my 3f conversion failed the mot today , 10% co at 10% its running fairly normal , sounds and drives "okay" so i gets home and mess with the afm , i can get it lower towards a pass , but it just hates it a pops and bangs and really doesnt like it all all service parts new /good , o2 unplugged,temp sender looks good on scanner , tried another afm , messed with ign timing etc checked all i can think off , cant really get my head round why it wants to run so rich and wont /struggles near normal readings
  4. Abd 3f injection. Start the car and runs fine for 3 or 4 min then idles low and cuts out, wont repond to throttle when chugging and ramind this way on restart unless left Any ideas
  5. earlier this year ive fitted full 3f mpi injection to my previously refreshed abd , still not running 100% and i decided to re seal the inlet mani incase it was leaking i gets it off and find the number 1 end is oily . not dripping but a good wet coating of clean engine oil thing is all breathers are vented elsewhere so i dont really get where on earth it could have come from ?
  6. Hello everyone! I've had quite the adventure in the past two years driving this car. It's quite the old car, but I kind of like the character these have. Problems pop up, and go away over time, most of them ignorable, but this one was a nasty surprise. I drive 1995 Ibiza 6K with a 1.4 8v ABD. I know, I know, it's not a Polo 6N but they're very similar so I was hoping if someone would help me here. All of the other SEAT-related forums seem to be just related to the newest cars or just downright dead. No help whatsoever. :/ I once again apologize for it not being a Polo, I just can't find anyone with this specific problem. What happened prior to the problem: The other day, the weather is damp, and the car started oscillating it's revs in a rhythmic way between 750 and 1200 rpm (idle and warm up revs), it is about to stall, but then it gives itself some throttle and goes to 1200 but then stalls to about 750 and throttles itself again until I intervene with a quick blip of the throttle and it goes away. It was odd, and enough to get my attention. After about a month, I decided to reset my ECU, so I disconnect the battery overnight and after 24 hrs I reconnect it and start the car. I let it run and it got down to 750. 10 minutes later, down the road, I stop my car at a stoplight, and it starts oscillating again, I blip the throttle, and it just revs itself to redline! It does not take any throttle input anymore, and I just cut the ignition. I start it up again, and it revs itself again to redline. I was afraid to dump the clutch to see if it would keep going, but I pushed the car to the side of the road and tried to see what was going on. The mechanic replaces the throttle actuator, and it went away for 15 minutes. Second replacement, 600RPM and it was away for 10 minutes, then the 3rd one was okay for 3 weeks. Now, I was having some short-lived fun, where I used full throttle, the car pulled no problem from 2000rpm to 5000rpm. And 2 minutes after that, at a carpark it's idle went from 750 to 1000, and when I tried parking, it again went to redline, same problem, whatever I try (it was wet outside again). When I turn the ignition on, the butterfly valve is wide open, is it supposed to be like that? I've searched high and low for answers, from one forum to the next, 2003 to 2015, I've learned how Monomotronic/Jetronic is supposed to work, what inputs it takes in, how it operates and whatnot. My mechanic has a parts car, so I can get replacements right away, I just don't want to burn a hole in my pocket (it's charred as it is :/) The car sits for 3-5 hrs and the problem goes away, but I'm afraid to make any longer journey in it. Can the actuator even push the throttle body all the way to wide-open? Could the ECU be knackered? I understand that all it takes is a small short circuit between the contacts on the ECU and the actuator goes out all the way, but W.O.T.? No way. I'm lucky it's not an automatic. If anyone can help me narrow down the possible problems, I would be very grateful! I have heaps more info I got from observation research of the car, but no-one had a W.O.T. problem like I do. P.S. The MPG was usually 26, but during winter it drops to 14. Any help with that would be good as well!
  7. Hi Everyone, So I am working on a Mk2f polo breadvan van. I bought it as a completely stripped shell with a few parts, I've worked my way up to making it solid, fitting some suspension, steering rack, wheels, brakes. I do have the original 1l engine, but it wasn't in the car when I got it, I haven't seen or heard it run. and then I've the original mk2f loom, which doesn't seemed to be marked very well. In my head I'm thinking it might be easier to drop a AFH or ABD engine in which ill strip myself from the donor, with its entire loom and drop it into the breadvan. Does an AFH or ABD just plop straight in? and more importantly, if I like the loom ignition etc straight from the donor car and put it in the stripped polo will there be any issues? Car is and will stay totally stripped, so no heating, no central locking, no anything that it doesn't need to stop and go. Any advice, suggestions more than welcome. Thanks
  8. I was planning on getting an abd lump in my polo. But i have no papers for it, so that might get me in trouble when i want to have it checked to get 1.4 on paper. (For insurance etc) A friend of mine said: why don't we put the crank, rods and pistons of the abd in the aav lump? So from the outside it looks like a aav, but from the inside it is a 1.4 abd? Is that possible? Does it fit? In Uk the abd swap is much more common than it is in Holland, so i hope someone has more info about it. Greetings from Holland.
  9. Hi everybody, I am planning on upgrading my aav engine to a abd engine. For now i have to keep the budget low, because my wallet is on intensive care. My plan is to use a abd lump and combine it with a g40/3f exhaust and perhaps a abd/abu cam. The best manifold to use would be a 421 manifold, but as i said the wallet is on intensive care. So for now i am going to use the aav manifold. But i saw a abd exhaust manifold, does anyone know if that manifold can be mated with the 3f/g40 exhaust? Because the abd lump was in the golf, it might be a pain in the ass to fit it with a polo exhaust?

    mk2f polo coupe

    Engine Dowels

    Hiya, so I had my 3F ABD engine back from the machine shop today and have noticed that there aren't any location dowels in the block or cylinder head and none returned loose. Strangely I do not recall seeing them when I removed the head from the block nor when I handed the block and head to the m/c shop. I have looked on vw etka and I do not see them listed on either the block or head sections. So the question is... Are there meant to be any dowels fitted to my engine? As this could save an embarrassing phone call to the m/c shop.

Hi everyone, I've bought a mk 2 project with the intention of doing an engine swap... found a 1.4 mk3 golf donor car that from what I've been reading should fit straight in (abd code) but the 60bhp seems not worth the hassle.. will a 1.6 polo/golf motor fit? Are they short blocks? Don't mind making mounts and converting to carbs.. just need a bit of a heads up before I get donor car... cheers
  13. Been searching but can't find anything about it, it's meant to of been taken out of an ABD engine, can anyone confirm this? If so is there anything different about it to the 030AH? Thanks, Joe.

    What engine is better of those 2, I now have ABD in and can get ABU for small price and i think its direct swap, so Is it worth time to do swap?

    Alternator compatibility.

    please let me know if I'm being a blithering fool here XD My alternator seems to have failed on my MK2 1.3 as the car has gradually failed to start after replacing the battery 1 month ago. I had a 70A alternator spare off a golf ABD which I had fitted to my (now deceased) Mk2f with ABD conversion. So I have now fitted it (using some fabrication to get the brackets to line up) to solve my problem. My question is, is this OK? Are the alternators actually compatible? It's just I notice the wiring is slightly different.. They both have a large ring terminal for power I presume, but the golf one has a two pin spade connector and the polo has an extra single ring terminal. The car runs, though whether or not the alternator is succeeding in keeping the car alive is yet to be discovered. please bear in mind that I am not a trained mechanic (rather a hobbyist) and I may well just be missing the necessary knowledge here. Any ideas appreciated. cheers :)
