  1. A couple of years ago we had an MOT failure on one of the door locks of our 2002 1.2 Polo sticking. Unfortunately this cost us £400 to have repaired but since then other locks now intermittently stick. I try with the key in the door as well as the interior door button but the problem gets worse, even the one we had fixed has since started to stick which begs the question is it more electrical then mechanical ? The locks seem to work better when the car has been running a little but the problem does get worse these last few weeks. Don't use the car that much which won't help. Once a week usually. As the MOT is up again next month I don't want to be in the same scenario having to pay again for such an old car with over 100K on the clock, as much as I like the car still. Any advice what this could be please ?
  2. Hi, In the process of rebuilding my mk2 after a few years but have come to connecting all the wiring harness back up and am having some issues as I cannot remember where a lot of it connects to. I've tried reading the Haynes but to be honest I really struggle to make sense of the wiring diagram. Is there anyone with a good knowledge of the mk2 harness that would be able to help me out? I can describe wire colour and origin etc and maybe someone could tell me where it connects to? Thanks, Aaron
  3. Hi, I have a 1990 Polo (1 litre engine). The fuel gauge and temperature gauge occasionally used to stop working whilst driving along. This was an intermittent problem and apparetly happened at random. When it happened, it would last an hour or two or maybe till the next time the car was started. However about a week ago it became permanent. So now the fuel gauge and temp gauge are permanently not working. This problem also affects the cluster of warning lights in the middle of the instrument panel, but does not affect the time clock or the speedometer. All other electrics (eg, external lights, internal lights, wipers, etc are working fine). Anybody have any ideas what the problem might be? I am quite happy to dismantle the instrument panel, I just don't know what to look for after I do that. I'm hoping somebody can give me a few pointers to find the cause. Thanks
  4. Hi All, This is a long shot, but does anyone have any information about the wiring for the rear wiper motor on a 9N3? (it's a 55 plate if that matters) Mine hasn't worked for years and I finally got around to looking at it yesterday. Long story short, there is a small circuit board on the wiper motor that's dead. I've driven the motor on a bench from a supply and know it works fine, and I've seen with a voltmeter that the car is sending a signal to activate the wiper, and power. I guess I've got three options, Replace the whole thing. Bit loathed to do this as it's only the circuit board that's bad, and I don't have a great history buying car bits. Build a circuit to replace the dead bit. Ignore it and leave it dead. (As half of the rear heated window doesn't work it's not a brilliant option) I'm interested in making a replacement circuit as I can do it fairly cheaply, however I don't know what all the pins on the connector do. There's a 4-pin plug connecting the motor. Giving the connector pins arbitrary numbers the pin-out is like this, pin 1 - ground pin 2 - ??? pin 3 - 12V pulse when turning on the wiper or 12V constant when activating wash pump pin 4 - 12V constant Does anyone know what 'pin 2' is for, or the kind of signal that is expected here? I've spent ages on Google and found very little at all, only that it's a signal going to the car computer but no idea what it does. Can anyone help please?
  5. · I have a 2001 Polo 1.4 with a mind of it's own. The windows have wound down with key in lock but not switched on, the central locking has locked the car while I was outside, again key in lock but not switched on, fortunately, I'd left the hatch open, the central locking works normally sometimes. I get a lot of clicking from the relays ( relay 410 in particular which I changed to no effect) and warning lights on dash flash when I switch off, this reduces if I put handbrake on. To add to this, I have a battery drain,( flat in 24 hours) so I had to fit an isolator switch. I have disconnected all the fuses, in car and under bonnet one by one but the drain is still there, the red wire from the battery is the problem ( it's unfused at least at the battery end) but I don't know where it goes as the wiring diagram in my Haynes manual doesn't agree with the wiring on my car ( no surprise there then). Suspect earth fault somewhere. Plus the air bag light is on which means that the car is an MOT failure. The engine and EPC light has been on for years but as that is not an MOT failure I can live with that. I have spent a lot on the car recently, new discs and pads front and rear, new battery, new alternator and of course, cam belts so am not inclined to sell it which would be impossible in it's condition, engine runs fine. I would appreciate if anyone have any idea's out there. Thanks in advance.

    Coil Ignition

    Hi Guys, I have a 2001 polo with a firing issue, I am looking for the resistance specifications regarding an NGK U2003 ignition coil, I’ve read that typically they should read between 7000 and 15000 OHMS but mine is at 4900, what do we think? Cheers
  7. Hi everyone, if anyone could help me diagnose my problem that would be amazing! I'm sure its down to something electrical? I have recently got back hold of the car (off road since'15) I had her firing a few times but running naff (always near enough flooding) so since these things I have changed; spark plugs, battery, replaced 1 HT lead (misfire), dizzy cap, oil sensor, blue and black coolant temp sensors, full service (oil, air & fuel) and also added and exhaust system. I have also added a gasket to the throttle body which was missing and fixed the one which sits between this and the carb (thick black one). Only after getting this far with the car today I've managed to see how bad the carbs flooding, if anyone has any ideas what it could be please let me know OR if you get the nail on the head I will PP you a beer token! :) Many thanks video here -
  8. Hi everyone, I wonder if you can help. I've read a couple of other threads with a similar described problem but not much in the way of a resolution so here goes! Both headlights have simultaneously stopped coming on when the switch is turned on. The sides and full beam still work fine though. For a short while, the headlights would come on if I repeatedly turned the switch on and off. The bulbs are both intact, as are the fuses and the connectors on the bulbs do not appear to be corroded. From my research, it sounds like the problem could be due to faulty ballast? Could this be the case given that both headlights packed up at the same time? If this is the case, is the only place to get a functional part from other Polo 6N2's? I am very much an amateur mechanic (this is still my first car!) but I am always willing to learn and have a go.   9. Hi, I've got a 1.6 polo GTI engine fitted into a Seat Arosa. All has been fine until recently it stopped turning on, I got a new battery as the old one was faulty, but it still happened. So I've fitted a brand new Bosch starter motor, and it still happens although now it won't start off of a jump where as before it would! Could it be a faulty starter motor? Or issues with the not a high enough gauge wire to the starter? I've been driving this car for 6 years with no problems until recently! Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have!
  10. Hi All, I am just wondering if somone can help me please as in a bit of a panic! I have a mk2 polo ranger from 1990 pre facelift, for the past few years its had a tempermental issue with the power feed (I beleive its the live cable from the ignition feed) to the speedo unit as intermittently loose power to the instrument cluster and gauges every now and then it will flicker and mess about, I have pressed all the crimps down in the loom plug to try and make contact to the many cables and its been ok ish for a year but now it will just not work at all now. I am in a bit of a panic as I have mot coming up at end of May! I do still have a working clock, full beam indicator on the cluster but I have lost temp,fuel gauges, handbrake light, oil & indicator lamp. I dont know if there is a supplier of loom plugs or some place I could get one? I have had a look on ebay with no such luck or even if there is something like it that will fit ok? The origional vw part number is: 321971998 Or is there a work around maybe I am open to ideas I dont care what has to be done as long as its working again to be honest. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Kindest Regards, Lewis
  11. I've had a couple of electrical problems that I've been meaning to get to for a while now but now there's a new one that has spurred me on to get on the case. I have a multi meter but am really a bit clueless when it comes to using it. 1. The latest problem is with my uprated headlight loom. It has worked fine since the end of summerwhen I fitted it but on driving home a couple of weeks ago the lights began to play up. when turning the high beams off for oncoming traffic (night driving) there would be a brief moment when it wouldn't revert to standard beams (just side lights). When I pulled up at home I turned all the lights off while engine was running with no problems, when I turned the ignition off to kill the engine the headlights came on and wouldn't turn off. Obviously when igition is off only the sidelights should come on despite switch position. For now I have reverted back to original loom and everything is fine. I'm guessing some sort of earth fault but don't know how to start. 2. Rear windscreen demister doesn't demist. It's probably something as simple as a corroded contact or broken corroded wire but as I said above I don't know what to do with the multimeter to determine where the problem lies 3. Temperature gauge occasionally drops off to zero. It'll often indicate quite a low temp (halfway between bottom and midway point on gauge) when the interior heater is on, and about halfway (normal) when the interior heating is off. But every so often it'll just drop as if it's not receiving any current. I have replaced the sensor in the radiator (halfway down on the left) and it didn't happen for ages but has recently started doing it again. 4. Speedo needle. This waivers quite severely at times, would I be right in thinking I need a new speedo cable? Is this a difficult job, where does the speedo cable even go? I'm ashamed to have to ask such basic electrical questions, when I did loads of work of the car four or five years ago I had the help of a couple of good friends who are very well versed on these matters. I have done a lot on my own but occasionally just need some direction and I don't want to have to keep bothering my friends with every little thing. So thought I'd bother you lot instead.
