  1. Hi, I've been struggling with my Weber carb for a while now, and I'm getting a bit bored of it. I have a DMTL 32/34 on a Mk2 Polo 2G engine, which is stock. Jetted as (from left to right, as seen from the front of the car, looking towards the back, with the throttle cable on the left): 70 | 185 - F30 - 120 | 155 - F22 - 100 | 45 Problems: All of these are on a hot engine with no choke. At Idle: No idle unless the mixture screw is 2.5 turns out. It's a little unstable but it's not obviously hunting (could be normal?) Coming off idle: Poor throttle response - 0.5 second delay, followed by a noticable lurch forward. Throttle feels like an on-off switch in low gears. Slowly opening to full throttle: Loss of power as second stage opens up, but no obvious misfire. Quickly opening to full throttle: Car hesitates, then lurches forward. I have tried: Searching for vacuum leaks. I have been spraying carb cleaner at the base of the carb, and at the hose connections. Nothing obvious. Timing. Ignition timing has been set and checked, with the vac advance unplugged and capped off. Twiddling the idle mixture screw. Highest idle speed is about 2.5-3 turns out. Cleaning. I have had the entire carb apart and thoroughly sprayed everything with carb cleaner. Float valve works. No obvious blockages. Mixture screw is air tight. Accelerator pump seems to work correctly and doesn't leak. Questions... At what point am I looking at jetting issues rather than something else? I have the Pierburg's old swirl pot (?) connected up and cable tied in place. So far I have the fuel going in at the top, the return in the middle, and the line off to the carb at the bottom. What's the proper way to connect it up?
  2. Hi, I am after a back left wheel arch trim for a 1987 polo saloon. Let me know if you have one to sell. Thanks, C

    mk2 breadvan Paula the Polo

Last October I bought this red beauty for 750 euro. A pretty good value imo, there is no serious rust on any structural parts. The ususal rust at the edge of the front-window and some below the rear bumper are the most severe cases of rust. The garage I bought it from put new wider but smaller wheels on it, so the car is already faster on the speedo : ) My plan is to take "Paula" for a roadtrip from Holland through scandinavia this summer. Before that can happen it does need some work on the engine though, I already posted on this forum about throttle hesitation. The fuel filter seemed to be the quick fix however the carb probably has a leak somewhere, the hesisation is still there. This is my first project car, so feel free to give me tips/advise! Last day of November Paula her home for the winter
  4. Hi club polo, Was looking forward to starting my polo build but I have found difficulty in finding repair panels online. I have a mk2 coupe s The only panel I can find is the sill. I need also the rear quarter around the filler cap, the right side wheel arch. Does anyone know where I can find these panels? If not are there any panels known from other cars that would be a good starting point to adapt and fit?
  5. Hi new here. Actually I used this forum to find my polo back in about 2009! I have a 1990 mk2 polo coupe s It's been great fun to own over the years😁 and on three occasions when I had no use or no money to run a car I lent it to mates to keep it and them on the road. It had damage when I bought it but it's gradually been getting worse over the years. Being t-boned and a couple of bonnet incidents etc. 🙄 I haven't paid much attention to the the bodywork and just enjoyed driving a ratty polo and the mechanics along the way. The biggest jobs so far being head gasket and bike carbs. So now it's time for me to finally learn something about bodywork and get it back on the road after nearly two years without mot due to rust. The problem appears to have started at the filler and has affected the rear quarter wheel arch and sill. The plastic trim had kept it hidden for a while. So I thought club polo would be a good place to start the project maybe I can pick up a few tips, parts and help others with the same problem. New to using forums so I'm thinking now maybe starting a build thread is of most value?
  6. Keep seeing you in Hamilton around the Burnbank area and wondered if you were on here? Sounds nice and makes me wish i keep my old loon.

    1983 coupe build thread.

Hi guys New member here! Thought I'd start a build thread for my mk2 coupe. I originally bought this car when I was 16, i got it up to a driveable standard and used it for 6 months or so after I passed my test, I then sold it on and regretted it ever since! After many years (almost 11) I finally saw it up for sale so I bought it back and after a very eventful trip home (and a debut on traffic cops) I started stripping it down for rebuild. Firstly I started on the engine, I tried turning it over by hand and it was having none of it so I pulled the head and was greeted by this very unfortunate sight So I cleaned it all out and started honing the cylinders only to find this

Keep standard or cafe racer !?

Hi, i'm a new user in the west mids, Brought this beast in nov and have done some bits, already has a webber 32/34 (which still squeals even after a rebuild), but the time has come to make my mind up, make it a clean standard example or lower it, get some baby G60s etc just keep flip flopping tho...don't want to ruin whats already survived for 30 odd years any suggestions ?
  10. Does anybody know whether the following steering wheel from an '86 polo is interchangaeble with the steering wheel on my '84 breadvan? The wheel I have in my car is this one: I saw somebody mention a change in the steering column around 1986. Not near my car right now to check it though
  11. On youtube there are multiple people showing how to clean your engine bay with a pressure washer, covering up only certain parts like the alternator. Would this be an idea for cleaning the engine bay of my '84 mk2 breadvan? There are so many fragile electrical cables☠️

    Project Mini golf

Now then Recently went in with a few mates to buy a breddy that had been stood a few year purely to make a bit of cash for my MK2 golf (hence the title, the missus thinks it's funny) Stored it on my drive, I fell arse over heel and ended up buying them out of it. So shes an 89 breddy, in white. No rot, no nastyness and a CBR powered Afh. I must add at this point that I know nothing of this car, I bought it unseen the mates who went to get it were clueless so I don't know when it was last ran/drove all I know is the last mot expired 2011 and it must have been garaged because it's in incredible shape. So before I even turned her over I pulled the carbs off, pulled the plugs, little bit of derv down the bores and let it sit over night. That night had a look inside the carbs(CBR f2) and decided that they needed rebuilt as most of the o rings were perished along with lots of seized brass. Main jets disintegrated on removal too. So if anyone wants some junk cbr f2 carbs I'm your man. Next day, turned her over by hand a few times felt good so dropped the oil, changed a few filters (thank God euros is still open) and did a bit of general poking /inspecting. turned my attention to the brakes, surprisingly okay no locking, moving freely and looking in decent shape. Ordered new carbs, new cables and a few other goodies to try and get it up and running at the weekend. Should be a laugh. If anyone knows the previous owner I'd love a chat and I look forward to having a carb'd 16v in my life again. Cheers
  13. So Me and a few mates chipped in to buy a car to break for parts between our various projects. I hadn't seen this car just fronted a few hundred to make a bit of money back. Ended up being stored on my drive, I fell arse over heel for it and bought them all out. It's a 1.4 16v on bike carbs, currently doesn't run because of the carbs so I'll be sorting those out in the coming weeks. It's got a club polo sticker so I assume the previous owner is on here and I'd like a chat to see what the crack is. Anyway Here it is (Excuse the drive, we only properly moved in a few week ago)
  14. Hi guys, How do you remove what would be the rear door card on a mk2f coupe (apart from there is no rear doors). Not sure what its called Rear interior trim panel for passengers. https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/1992-120/8/867-84000/#3 Can see on etka little screw at bottom - that's fine. But how do the clips at the top near the window work? Don't want to break anything. Do seats/rear bench need to come out? Any help much appreciated.
  15. Hi, unfortunately my bready has become an annoying illusive siv... I have had an oil leak fairly excessively for a couple months costing copious amounts on oil. I decided after looking and looking that although I had a suspicion of the leak being from either the rocker or head gaskets as had just changed them. So after fully dismantling and re assembling after a deep bay clean and an actual metal coloured engine had appeared I was able to see it was from the rocker cover gasket in the drivers side and closest to front of car corner of the gasket. The rocker cover sits level but does have some movement left right when the top bolts are not tightened down. Is there a position the rocker cover has to be in to properly seal? The gasket is also seemingly slightly big as you can see it on a side of the rocker cover when it moves. Have attached pics to help explain although have a video I cannot attach here of the movement l/r of the rocker I can email etc ? Any help appreciated Thanks a lot George
  16. Hi, have replaced by camshaft bearing cap studs (they are m8x56 double ended studs). I am wondering either if there is a specific vw nut which will yield correctly or be 'proper' and not a snappy ebay special boi. Is there a m8 bolt I can buy in a type of steel that will be best too? Any help Cheers George

    89 breadvan

Hi everyone, first time poster here. Currently restoring a breadvan with my youngest son - we wanted a project we could work on together. Only one lady owner - for real. We were lucky enough to find one with full documentation 🙂

    83 black breadvan

Just bought my second mk2 after about 4 years of wishing I never got rid of my first one. She is in a right state as fuel filler neck, wheel arch, fuel filler flap and battery tray is rotten. There’s general surface on near all panels where paint has been damaged. And one half of the car is rattle canned. As far as I can remember the polo was taken off the road in 1998 to be used as a donor car. So pretty happy to do the work to get her back on the road. If anyone else has a black mk2. I’d love to see it as I’m thinking of respraying it back to gloss black.
  21. Hi, am pretty new to general car scene but am happy taking bits apa. I have run into the issue of one of my camshaft bearing caps has cracked where the threads to hold the rocker cover on are. The bearing housing is ok it's just the threads for the cover. I am aware these dont need to be f tight (correct me if wrong) therefore there is the option possibly of using something like JB weld. If I use this will it be strong enough, anyone had this issue ? The other option is do an engine swap, I have the engine completely stripped at the moment as was cleaning the bay so it is more or less ready to be pulled out. What engines and gearbox combinations will fit a mk2 89 bready? My final question is, is it worth engine swapping? I am 17 so insurance may poo themselves or I have to lie... The sensible option is swap to original engine or do I buy a new cylinder head and try to change that with mine? Any help appreciated. ( have attached files of broken part) Thanks a lot G

    Willysmiles build thread

Been staring at peoples build threads for months now, so I decided to give my own a go. bought a completely standard 1988 coupe s with only 60k miles on the clock! One old couple owner from new, it’s a true standard gem; however I’ve now got my hands on it... my plan is to keep it looking mostly original looking but underneath have some nice mods to bring it to fast road spec, well as fast as a 1.3 can be. More to follow over over the next few months!

  25. The exhaust on my '84 mk2 polo seems to have a lot of play. When going over a bigger bump or hole in the road I get a terrible screeching noise of metal on metal. My guess is the muffler slams the body, the 2 old donut rubbers that it hangs by are very worn. A parts dealer in my area gave me new rings, OEM-matched using my number plate. But the new rubbers seem smaller and are nowhere as flexible as the old ones. Wrong part? I can't possible put on both rubbers now by hand, there is way too much tension.
