    Mk2f Polo CL 'The Breadbin'

Bought this as our runaround but also as a bit of a project, or at least it turned into one the more I found wrong with it! Was 143k when I got it, numerous previous owners and full of bodges. My partner (who is a kiwi) called it the 'Breadbin' instead of breadvan and it kind of stuck! Here it was when I picked it up - had no idea what I was getting myself into... The first drive was interesting getting used to such a spartan car (last car was a Volvo 240, although I had a Trabant 601 before that so don't know what I was complaining about!) Huge list of un-photographed fixes including heates rear windscreen, foglights, chair adjuster knobs, re-sealing the door membranes to stop a constant leak. First big change to make was the sunroof - sealed shut by a previous owner. Got the thing out with copious amounts of elbow grease, WD40 and a plastic bicyle tyre lever as a scraper. Sanded and painted, few coats of 2K clearcoat. All rattlecans as I don't have the space (nor the compressor) to do things with a gun. Came out nice though. Next was the boot lid as it was starting to rust through and the inside lip for the window seal was corroding. Luckily a clubmember had a nice spare one to buy Had a few scuffs on the new lid so painted those up. Love this blue! Bit of a hassle getting the old one off - thank god for neighbors. Much cleaner!
  2. I have just bought a mk2f polo breadvan but have found most of the driver side sill is shot and possibly the floor pan. I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere to buy floor pans for the mk2f as I haven't been able to find any.
  3. Hi I've got a 93 polo mk2f and the battery keeps draining. I had the alternator replaced recently and have been assured that's not the problem. Guy from the garage seems to think its mechanically sound and there's an electrical fault somewhere. Had my battery tested and was told it's 96% capacity so think I can rule that out. I'm thinking its a electrical fault somewhere but don't know where to start. When I got the car the car I noticed a few electrical issues: CD player not working - Initially worked but stopped connecting to speakers out of the blue, the player itself was working. Have disconnected since Dash lights don't work (driving at night is fun), but can control brightness of heater switches with the adjuster for the dash lights. Petrol gauge isn't working Wondering if anyone knows if these could be the issue or something else? And if any of them could just be down to fuses. Not sure where to find fuses for this! Appreciate any help. Cheers
  4. Hi All I have a 1994 VW Polo Mk2 Facelift Genesis with 45400 miles on the clock available. The car has 2 owners from new and was last owned by my next-door neighbour’s dad who passed away a couple of years ago. The intention was to give the car a quick go over and back on the road, but I started doing this, and then that, then circumstances changed and now the car is up for breaking or someone who wants a job lot. I need the space back and willing to give it a couple of months but then Mr scrap man will have a treat. I will get some pictures up over the next week. Interior is in near perfect condition, abit dust and the dash has a mark where some sticky tape was but apart from that, not torn or worn front or back. Engine has done 45400 miles, I drove it into my drive from next door, sounded ok, with a blown exhaust, looks like it could do with a new dizzy cap and rotor along with a rubber rocker seal. 5 speed gearbox all gears working and smooth. Basically, all parts are up for grabs; panels, glass, looms, seals, trims, lights...... All items are ‘make me an offer’. I am located between Basingstoke and Fleet. Bad parts I am thinking the spings/shocks are original so will be no good, they are not leaking but prob not worth it. If anyone is interested in the shell; Front slam panel has had minor bump and where the fuel filler neck rusted out it got abit of the sill and arch which I have started to fix, one sides basically done. Passenger rear arch needs attention. Ok/Pretty good parts New drivers wing has been fitted and sealed already but can come off. Passenger wing, it had a minor dent on delivery which is easy to fix. Bonnet was perfect before I started to rub it down so will need finishing off and a spray. Bumpers are not cracked but the brackets might need attention for a 100% as new fit. I have refurbished the doors as the bottoms had the usual minor rust, they basically need a rubdown and spraying. Interior is all good from carpet to sunroof. Brand new parts – all prices are ‘make me an offer’, we all know/can lookup the new price and willing to take a second-hand to almost giveaway if buying multiple items. Front disc / pad brakes, pagid Fuel tank Clear front indicators Rear brake drum cylinders + brake shoes Tie rods x2, brand new, fitted only used to roll the car in and out 3 or 4 times. Both steering arms ARB rubbers, front OEM
  5. Hi folks Recently picked up this 5 speed box for my Polo as a spare part. I've cleaned it up a bit to try and see the code but the numbers/letters I can make out don't seem to tally to any of the codes I've seen that were used in the Mk2/3 Polo's. Does any have an idea what it might be? To me it looks like 8CWN??075 TIA

    Stateside Polo

Just picked up this 1992 Polo here in the US. As you can see it needs a thorough cleaning, the previous owner had it parked in his driveway for sometime before I acquired the car. In its lifetime it was sent to a shop to have an AEB 1.8t swapped into it. Im new to Polos but certainly not new to VW. 👍
  7. Recently when cold, my car engine sounds a bit "tappy". It quietens down once warm, and I can only hear it when the engine is revved a little. Sometimes it goes completely. It might be worn tappets. Are they expensive to replace? Is it cheaper to try an oil change?
  8. Hi! I have an issue with my current (and previous engine to some extent) I have this noise that drives me nuts, previous engine was quite worse, but IIRC pretty much similar. On the previous engine I changed rod bearings, tappets, even piston rings (while I was in there as I wanted to check if there is any play in the wrist pin), and the noise still persisted. On the current one I only swapped out the tappets to ones that felt solid to squish. Is this tappet noise? Youtube link here Any help would be appreciated. P.S. it sort of loud as I currently don't have an exhaust on postcat.

    1.4 gt

I'm about to build a 1.4 gt, would I benefit from fitting the gt cam in 1.4 engine?

    1992 framboise polo mk2f project

Hey guys this is my build thread for my Polo mk2f ill be updating it as i go along the project heres how it looked when i bought the car.
  12. Hi all, Next up on my list of MOT failures are the front anti-roll bar bushes. The ones on my motor seem to be different from the standard mk2f ones (see pic) Does anyone know where I can source some? Cheers as always, Tim
  13. Hi in am at the stage now after engine bay and wheel arch respray on fitting the engine and front wings . I noticed before I took the wings off i had to remove the rubber type sealer that was on the body between the wing . It's the section at the top of tthe wing you bolt down . I don't want to bond the wings on just same stuff use from factory kind of flexible sealer ? Any help and advice is welcome.
  14. Slowly breaking a 1.3SPI AAV white breadvan 1993. Let me know if you want anything. Dash fully stripped. Wings sold. Engine bare block sold. Door rotted out at bottom. Seats not good. Gearbox, ARB staying with me. Located Somerset TA19
  15. So my car is burning some oil notice it when the car is warmed up get blueish smoke when at a stop idling then pulls away i.e. Traffic lights seems to be ok on the move but then noticeable on the overrun Did a compression test with engine hot Cy1 180psi Cyl 2 180.5 psi Cyl 3 165 psi Cyl 4 180 psi Cyl 3 is a little low but would think is still above spec? Then got a camera down bores to see pistons in order cyl 1 first pic etc Cyl 3 looks the cleanest Also do these look like standard G40 pistons cant really tell?
  16. Would like to change the engine in my mk2f for a 6n2 gti what parts am i going to need from the donor car?
  17. Hi! I've been looking into the 16V route on a MK2F and an engine finally surfaced for an acceptable price (and at all), which is a 1.6 16V either ARC or AVY (judging by the hump on the engine cover, as AJV doesn't have one). I would like to run it on stock management because of convenience (and everything being sold as a set, and MAYBE cruise control on a mk2f, huh?), and as far as I can tell, the engine is DBW so the pedal needs sorting. Could anyone who has done such thing share their findings? Is it possible to make the pedal sit right - I haven't had the opportunity to look at the OEM pedal box yet, but I need SOME info ASAP, before the engine is gone. I'm guessing fuel pump needs changing to the higher pressure one as well (and probably more flow) because of multipoint injection? I think generator control is different, so I probably must run a 5pk belted one. Downpipe probably needs adjustment to sit right. Immo delete, all that. Am I missing something obvious? I searched for similar things either there were no matches, or the posts were empty.
  18. Hi, I was wondering if anyone has tried fitting an 020 4 speed to the mk2? I am trying to avoid getting one and leaving disappointed. In terms of pictures that I find, I think it could work, because the side mount about the same, but the lower mount might need fabrication. I am looking into this as 02* gearboxes are slightly stronger and because it would ease up looking for a 16v engine, because I could buy one from a MK4 Golf, or similar, which we have lots of. Driveshafts could be an issue as well
  19. The main beam tell-tale on my dash clocks has gone seriously dim. I can't see the blue light at all in the daytime, so I have sometimes no idea if the main or dipped beam is operating. Also my dash clocks sit low, so the odometer trip reset hits the top of the steering column cowling. The haynes manual has some guidance on how to remove the clocks. Is it possible to use a coathanger instead of the tool it mentions? Does the steering wheel have to come off? Is the bulb easy to replace? Would it be straightforward to use an LED instead?
  20. I am in the process of tidying up my radio wiring harness. It's been butchered over the years and now is a lot tidier. I can't identify one wire. It's blue and white in colour and is connected to pin 10 of a 12 pin plug (with the rest of the radio power feeds). Is this the illumination feed for the car radio? If so then it should be connected to the orange wire of the ISO connector? There is also an unconnected small brown plug with a blue/white wire buried next to the 12 pin plug. Is this the illumination feed for an unconnected switch? (say some optional extra like heated front seats)
  21. Hi all, My G has failed on a whole load of things this year. One of these is the steering. Garage thinks it's best to locate another in a scrappie. Are the columns the same in all mk2/mk2fs? Are they fairly simple to whip out? Thanks for your help guys.
  22. Had a look through old posts and found a fair few postitive comments about fitting a lower 'Ged-style' strut brace between the ARB mounts, e.g., one from PPP: http://www.poloperformanceparts.co.uk/shop.php?cat=2 Thing is, it seems to me that most people who modify their suspension like this have already gone down the road of lowering / stiffer shocks / stiff bushes etc. I've kept my bready OEM style and would like to keep it that way as much as possible - is a front strut brace going to be as excellent a mod as it appears to be? I understand the reasoning and physics behind it but the main reason I'd like one is how my bready has been handling since i replaced all the front bushes - it feels so much stiffer! It used to handle like a full bathtub! So having caught the bug I'd like to improve the handling even more - especially if its such a cheap and simple job. 100% Worth it? Any downsides?
  23. When i bought my Polo the sunroof was sealed shut with some horrendously ugly (but ultimately effective) black silicone sealant. It wasn't a deal-breaker so I decided if its not leaking then I can just live with it. However as I've been tidying up the rest of the bodywork this monstrosity on the roof is starting to look increasingly crappy by comparison and has started to stick out like a sore thumb! The paint needs redoing on the roof and the colour of the steel sunroof is decidedly off compared to the rest of the car - wouldn't mind sorting that. Not to mention the fact that the weather has been great recently which got me wondering what it would be like to have a sunroof... So I think I need a bit of a reality check really! Is it worth hacking away at all that black silicone and re-doing the sunroof seal? Am I just going to indroduce a new leak further down the line? I'm also wary of how much it would likely cost for what is basically a small hole in the roof on a sunny day...Haven't found any sunroof seal parts apart from on VW Heritage for ~90 quid. I guess you should also ask why someone decided to silicone up the roof in the first place - Was it leaking like a sieve? Was the leak due to a rotting roof and they couldn't be bothered to repair it? Were they just another idiot with a sealant gun and an itchy trigger finger? The bogan in me says if I want a smarter roof I should remove the silicone and fill in the gap around the sunroof smooth with body filler and paint over the whole thing as if its a plain roof. I could probably do with being told this will be a terrible idea also...
  24. My 93 Polo Coupe's back box is a right mess and I'm looking to change it, I've been looking at a Cherry Bomb Back Box but I'm wondering if anyone has any better ideas. I can only really go as far as £50 as I'll need the rest for labour charges. cheers.
  25. My 93 Polo Coupe has UV damage where "FOX" side decals used to be, I'd quite like to cover up the damage with new "FOX" side decals but can't find a pair anywhere. I've found a German parts website but they only seem to do a left side decal but not the right side. Does anyone know where I could get a left & right side decal? cheers.
