Quick cambelt question MK2F - flapping belt
oldtech posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
Just replaced the cambelt - first thing I noticed was maybe 1cm of belt flapping at idle along the long length between cam & crank - is this a problem? Car runs fine, belt isn't whirring. Tightened to 90 degree twist on short length, just over 90 flapping length. I used the same brand of belt last change and found any tighter would cause belt to whirr loudly. -
Quick timing question MK2F GT - car picks up quicker after cambelt change
oldtech posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
MK2F GT: I'm trying to understand TDC vs ignition and how a belt tooth either way can affect performance: Which direction on crank pulley timing notch will advance the ignition, if that's the right term for this - clockwise when facing crank/cam sprockets toward the forward edge of timing gap, or counterclockwise toward rear of gap? I timed the crank pulley slightly clockwise lined up with forward edge of the gap which ended up bang in the middle after a couple of rotations. I think it was further back last change at the other end of the gap which it's been running like for past 2 1/2 years. I don't know if it's the current weather - thought hot & dry weather was slower than cold & condensation though? But the engine seems to have more torque now. Engine seems more 'alive' compared to before but I thought having the pistons fire after TDC further down on their travel (clockwise at gap) would decrease power as more volume? Surely more power = more anticlockwise back at TDC or have I got any of this wrong? Want to learn - please help me understand 🙂 -
Hi all, when I bought my 6n (1.4 CL) the bloke I got it from told me his father had done the timing belt in 2016 at what can only be 10K miles ago. He had No receipts or anything to prove but being a silly youth I bought the car. It has now occurred to me that the timing belt to me does not look all that “fresh”. Has a kind of thin zebra pattern on the back of the belt buT I can still read the Print. See pics attached, is changing the belt a hard job? My Haynes manual always makes jobs seem more complicated than they really are. Cheers in advance

cambelt Cambelt tracking to one side
MonsterL35YFP posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
Hello polo people I post on here way to often at the moment but I'm having a slight issue with my cam belt it seems to be tracking to one side that much that the lip of the belt is just off the cam sprocket, now iv changed the water pump and belt plus the aux belt, my thinking is that the water pump is slightly off centre or iv tightened the aux belt to much. But just incase is there anything I can do to troubleshoot this? Cheers -
Hi guys, I need to replace the cambelt on my 1989 polo s however I can’t seem to find a kit with it all in (water pump etc). If anyone has any advise I’d appreciate it. 1.3l engine 4speed Cheers :)

1999 1.4CL - Help on TDC for Cambelt Change
ashley750 posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and Exhaust
Started stripping down the RHS end of the engine tonight, ready to change the cambelt. But when setting to TDC, it doesn't seem to line up as the Haynes manual states it should. I have aligned the chamfered tooth on the crank pulley with the mark on the engine casing ,but when I do this, the punch mark on the camshaft pulley is not in line with the moulded bit on the inner cover. The engine runs fine, but not sure how to proceed. When I line up the camshaft pulley correctly, the chamfered tooth on the crank pulley aligns with the other rib in the second photo. Is this the rib I should be using? Do I leave it as is? Do I line up the marks correctly before putting the new belt on? Many thanks.
