    Lowering Help!

    Hello! I have an 83 Breadvan and looking for the best solution to subtly lowering it. It has 14" immitation g60 wheels and I am pretty sure that any lowing on the rear is going to scrape the arch - centre of tyre sticks slightly further out than the arch. If the front it just lowered (by around 40mm on springs) will it look too top heavy? Does anyone have any other solution or experienced this? Any help welcome and appreciated! Thanks!
  3. Hello Club Poloers, Long shot because I don't use CP too much anymore and I'm not sure how active people are on here, but I need some help over the Christmas period. My Polo is on coilovers but I raised it ages ago, but would like to lower it back down. I don't really have any tools and I think it might be tricky as they're probably seized up. I was wondering if anyone in the Huddersfield area would be up for helping me lower it back down over Christmas? I'll be in Huddersfield from 22nd December to 1st January. Crate of beer in it for whoever can help me. Preferably someone with a decent garage space/ramp to do it in. Cheers! Patrick

  5. Im fitting some coilovers to my mk2f and they came with pretty much brand new top mount bearings on the front but nothing on the rear, I'm wondering if something like mk2 golf rear top mounts will fit? They are alot cheaper and easier to find then polo ones.

Had my new AP coilovers fitted last night, so naturally I went to take it for a cheeky drive straight away, I put the car into gear, and went to find the biting point and there was a massive (and very loud) grinding/painful noise coming from the front of the car, the noise is happening as I approach biting point, in every gear including reverse, but it screeches for 5th + 6th. The car starts, idles, and revs normally, the clutch appears to be working as it should, and the gears go in perfectly every time. But when I go to move something is preventing the car from sending any power to the wheels. I can't see anything visable that would cause this. The car was perfectly fine to drive home last night from work - not a single issue, and after coilovers were fitted this problem arose, is it just a coincidence that something else went wrong at the same time?   8. Does anyone know where i can get a pair of these spring seats for 6n polo coilovers? (arrowed in the photo) Or can i use the standard spring seat with coilovers? Thanks

I'm about to lower my 9n for the first time, I think i'm going to go with fk's because i've heard they're probably the best ones, what would be a sensible attractive height that wont completely break my back? They go up to 100mm on the front and 75mm on the back and i'm wondering if anyone out there can give me a good preference height that looks good and doesn't mess your ride up too bad. Thanks.

    Mint green mk2f afh build

    Polo 1992 I brought this polo last year with the aim of shoving a afh in it so I got underway . Stripped everything off brake pipes ,axel ,fuel tank the lot . Every thing was sanded ,cleaned ,painted then put on or replaced with new parts . Next step was trying to find a set of wheels and came across a very rare set of image 3 peice splits 7 j fronts 8 j rears got the center's powdercoated and repolished the lips At the moment I'm at the stage of trying to get it running properly as she only runs on 3 cylinders but one day she will run properly Everything on the car has been done by me polishing ,painting, rebuild and sourcing all parts I didn't want to go down the rich boy route of sending everything off and getting it back when it's perfect .   13. Thought I'd put together a quick post with regards to suspension kits/setups. I regularly see the same questions asked, particularly on social media with regards to suspension kits, lowering cars etc; so I thought I would try and generalise some advice. Generally, the majority of people seem to want to lower their car, which can be achieved in several ways. Cheapest option: Lowering springs. These can be bought cheaply, and of different brands and quality. Often designed with a few of the coils designed to go coil-bound under the vehicles weight, this ensures the spring is still properly seated with the suspension in full rebound, but also allows it to sit lower under its weight. Generally, you get what you pay for - the springs will tend to be a different rate to standard, and totally change the character of a car, therefore the standard dampers will no longer be matched to the rest of the vehicle. You may find it doesn't drive too great with just lowering springs, or you suffer premature wear of your dampers. Spring and shock kit: As mentioned above, damping can be an issue with lowering springs - not just the damper settings themselves, but also the range of travel the damper has - generally a lowering spring will be both shorter and stiffer, so to ensure it has the correct amount of pre-load, dampers matched to lowering springs tend to have reduced travel. You can spend between £100 and probably £1500 on a spring and shock kit. Cheaper kits will do the job - but probably won't be as good a quality, or have had any of the R&D which a more expensive kit will have had (Bilstein for example) Dependant on your vehicle platform, ride heights can be adjustable with a spring and shock kit via a circlip on the damper body, however, not as accurately as 'coilovers' Coilovers: People commonly describe a lowering kit with threaded height adjusters as coilovers, when really coilovers just means a coil spring over the damper, so technically every standard polo has coilovers on at least the front, and on the rear on some models too. However, for ease of description, coilovers are a spring and damper kit, which generally has threaded adjusters for adjusting ride heights. This is what people tend to go for to get their cars really low (although a lot of them aren't actually approved to go as low as people run them) These are great for tweaking your ride heights, and particularly if you have a track car, setting up the corner weights accurately. Again, you get what you pay for, cheap coilovers can be had for around £150 and up to and over £2000. Cheaper ones tend to again 'do the job' by lowering the car, however handling and ride quality tend to be somewhat sacrificed. More premium brands such as KW put more development into their kits, therefore you are paying towards that, but essentially end up with a better product. Air Ride I don't really have any experience with after market air suspension, so wouldn't like to comment on what is good and bad. Air will let you drive your car at a sensible height, then release air from the air springs to lower your car to look better. Air springs can be a very tunable component, however I have no idea how much thought is put into this for after market kits. Certainly sleeve bags can be made to have linear and non linear rates so you could essentially make a great kit if the effort was made. From what I have seen a lot of kits use bellow style bags, which I don't really know anything about. Air can be bought cheaply second hand, or you could pay up to £10000 getting a good kit professionally installed. Summary When it comes to suspension, the first thing you should ask yourself is 'What am I trying to achieve?' Generally you are compromising a car from what the manufacturer originally created when you start fitting after market suspension, so you need to decide what you are willing to compromise, whether that be ride quality, handling, durability, practicality and so on. Personally I would save up as much as possible to buy the best quality kit you can, it may even pay to buy a premium Spring and Shock kit, instead of a cheap coilover kit. I have witnessed lots of horrors with after market suspension kits, with regards to how they are fitted, or removing parts to make cars lower etc. Just bare in mind, if things like helper springs and bump stops are supplied with a kit, they are supposed to be fitted - if the manufacturer didn't deem them necessary, they wouldn't put them in! When you are driving along and the vehicle goes into a heave moment, such as a small "jump" in the road the main springs become unloaded, without helper/tender springs, the force of the spring acting on the tyre contact patch is lost, the same thing happens when cornering - as the car rolls and the inside of the car essentially lifts up, the spring becomes unloaded, this results in a huge difference in contact patch loading on the tyre, which could well result in erratic and dangerous handling characteristics. Here is an example with a tender spring correctly fitted. The vehicle has its wheel off the ground, so the damper is at its maximum rebound travel, yet the spring is still preloaded: Here is an example without a tender spring fitted, note the gap at the top of the spring, this means there is a lot less force acting on the tyre (basically just the weight of the unsprung mass hanging down) but also when the suspension is compressed again it will have very little force due to no spring resistance, and then a sudden large build up of force: You will find with more expensive coilover kits, the height adjustment range is a lot less than that of cheaper ones, this is because it has been designed to work around a certain range, and optimised for that. This is a key indicator that cheaper kits which have a huge lowering range aren't perhaps as great as people think. I have tried to explain in simple terms to help people understand, but anyway, I hope this brings some help to someone!
  14. Hi Guy's Has anyone ever fitted Eibach coilovers to there 9n3? they seem greatm handle really well! but the rears still seem very high!! I took the adjusters out and every speed bump I got over gives a big knock on the rear? anyone know what this could be? I have put them back in now and its gone. Also as soon as I fitted them the drivers side rear sat lower, could this be that the rear beam bushs are very worn? Thanks!!

    '98 Polo 6n 1.0 L Full Respray

    Hello, thought I'd share with Club Polo, me and my dads project of respraying my first car, a 1998 Polo 6N 1.0L. Short story of how it ended up in my ownership... It's one owner from new, an old bloke bought it brand new back in November 98, and ran it till he gave up driving a couple of years ago, and it was salvaged by my dad, as I was basically about to turn 17, I asked him if I could have it, it was either a Polo or 1999 fiesta, I chose the polo because its interior was clean as whistle, basically brand new because of the seat covers. The outside however... it was parked up under a tree for over a year, so there was a serious amount of green which came off the car when it was steam cleaned. I passed my test at the end of January and off I was in my little red polo! 2 months later... I'm pretty sick of the bodywork on the car now, the lacquer was already coming off everywhere, and its just an eye-saw. Dad told me to get prepping the outside, so i roughly sanded most of the car off in a day. drove it around for a bit with the 'rat look'. Now though is where the final preparations are taking place for it to be painted... I say final preparations, turns out the car is obliterated with tiny little dents everywhere as we sand it down, these all have to be filled up of course because my dads a perfectionist and clearly doesn't want to spoil his reputation when I'm a driving around example of his work (he prepares and resprays cars for a living by the way). The original colour of the car is (i believe) 'Flash Red', we're painting it in Alfa Romeo Rosso red, because he has loads left over from painting a Alfa Sprint Veloce. I reckon this will make it look pretty sharp. Today... I fitted FK Automotive Coilovers all round, bought them from a nice bloke called Matt in Lee-on-Solent, also bought some Golf Mk2 GTI 14" Steels from him, tried those out on the car and they look awesome with the car lowered too. That's about as far as we've got at the moment. Will update and include pictures ASAP. Thanks for reading : )

Hello, I've bought a 9n3 2009 1.2 recently its fully stock and i want to get into moding it, to start off i want to lower the car since it looks like a rabbit right now. should i go ahead with lowered springs or buy a set of coilovers. i looked at the JOM's and the eibach springs dont really know what to go for and what would be better. Also if i do get the springs i dont want to go too low to still keep it practical. Any opinions or advice would help since im new to all of this, just passed my driving recently, thanks. cheers.
  17. Hey guys, I've been on here since 2008 (i think), got my polo in december 09 and after owning it for 5 years, i thought it was time to let it go and start a fresh. So in October I bought a Passat and sold the polo. It was a sad day to see her go, but the love had gone so chuff it. it had 205k on the clock and was starting to have some teenager tantrums so it was a case of getting rid before it cost me a fortune. Evidently, the headgasket went an hour after selling the car and it lost a full expansion bottle of coolant in 17 miles... but thats another story. anyways, the passat. I bought it like this with the A5 wheels and a halfords special headunit which i blooming hate. I was determined to leave it alone until the winter passed incase we got some bad snow. That mentality lasted a month before I bought some coilovers... had to change the tyres on the front because they caught like fuck and were scrubbing constantly. so the same day as fitting them, I bought a pair of 205/45s for the front and left the rears with the balloons. was a cool hot rod kinda look! then payday came around again and i'd got sick of the rears scrubbing slightly going over bumps, so i got another pair. A few weeks after that I had the car mapped, purely because i couldnt really say no to a custom remap for £200. I went for a blend of power and economy, so its about 155/160bhp, but still got up into the mid to high 50s on mpg on a run and mid 40s round the doors. Before I even bought the passat, I had the wheels sorted. Freshly refurbed Porsche Cayenne wheels. 19x9 ET60, and completely immaculate. They sat in my room for like 6 months before I actually got round to fitting them. but it gave the shitty weather a chance to go and me a chance to save up for tyres and adaptors. I managed to land on my feet for both, bagging the tyres nearly new for £160 and a pair of brand new adaptors for £50, and the other for £70. and on the car... I also upgraded the front brakes to 312mm from a V6 TDI Passat. A few weeks after, i was offered a set of Sport Design centre caps. I didnt even know they existed, but i like them. Finally, i've got this to work on... Genuine US tailgate that was damaged in transit from the states. Most of the dents came out from behind with a block of wood and a hammer, but it still needs a bit of attention from a panel beater. Still, for £50 i cant complain. Thats all for now... i'll try and keep it updated as the progress goes on, but i cant promise anything Thanks for looking guys, Andy.

Hi guys, This is my first post since joining so please excuse any mistakes I'm looking to fit 16" Montreal II's to my 9N3 once they've had a refurb and was also thinking about lowering to make it sit better. Basically I want to lower it, but not for 'megalows'. The reason I don't want to go really low is that the roads around here are made more of speed humps than anything else! and that I still want it to be practical with passengers etc. I originally thought 35-40mm all round on just lowering springs, but the more and more I read coilovers seems to be everyone's preference? I know the standard shocks will only perform to a certain level with lowering springs, and coilovers makes sense in that regard but are they worth it for only a subtle amount... What's the lowest you can go on standard shocks? Also, if I do go with either route, I would still like it to remain somewhat comfortable, not jarring. Any advice would be appreciated, many thanks!

Hey guys, I got some coilovers from my friend for my 6R polo and I was messing with it today, first problem I come across is the "star" bolt with 18mm nut at the end that holds the front at the place. I'm gonna have to get that screwdriver or torque socket of this size. There's also this clamp thing that hold the brake line in place. so, I just yanked it out, no harm done apparently. That's the furthest i could get at the front, so I'll leave it for next weekend. However, if you have any tips let me know please. The rear: I have this little problem with removing the springs.. there is no alignment at the back so theres is nothing to undo to get the spring to pop out. My only hope is to use a spring compressor to squeeze them and get them out this way. The picture shows the spring completely loose, it won't go any lower but its still pretty solid in place.. rubber hammer maybe? what do you think? I couldn't find anything anywhere .. nobody has done an installation video or forum post regarding.. Thanks for the help in advance.

  23. Afternoon guys, I found myself in an awkward situation the other day. I had just fitted some shiny new JOM bluelines to my beloved 02 9N but when I set the car down from the axle stands, two problems became apparent: The car was 60mm Higher than when I started The drive shaft was rubbing. I know I need shortened drop links to go lower than about 40mm but the coilovers should have allowed me the initial 30mm drop when they where wound fully up with the helpers still in.(I did try some shorter ford mondeo ones but this didn't help either) they had to be taken off as no position moved the drive shaft far enough away from the ARB. Has anyone encountered this before? I am now looking for alternative cheap coilover options and wondered if any of you could offer any suggestions for kits that would fit?

I have recently lowered my 6n2 tdi on coilovers and this means the rear axle is a lot closer to the part of the exhaust system that bends over the rear axle. now it makes a loud knocking noise every time i go over a bump. it also seems that i can not go any lower with out the axle crushing my exhaust. someone must of had this problem too. how can i fix it ?
  25. So guys I have decided that due to there being absolutely no information on the limits of lowering your car; be it coilovers, springs or bags. I would like you to post a picture of your car along with a tape measure next to it showing how far it is from the ground. Along with a short list of the pro's and con's of the height you have set your car with the set up you are using. Keep it short guys Please note that this will not be a competition, it is going to be the only source for a lowering guide
