  1. Hi guys. I'm reasonably new on here - been on club G40 for a good few years tho. Basically I've reshelled my G40 into a breadvan, engine has been fully rebuilt etc. My issue is no spark and the injectors aren't firing. I have fuel pressure at the rail, which as far as I can see means that both the ecu relay and the fuel pump relay are good. I've got 12v at the coil with the ignition on, and I've checked the resistances and theyre all good too (this was a brand new coil 6 years ago and has done ~200 miles). The distributer again was a brand new part just before my G40 died 6 years ago, but I know Hall senders can cause issues so I swapped it out for the known working item from the old 1.0 spi engine, and still no luck. All of this seems to be pointing towards an ecu fault but I'm sure there will be something I'm missing. Anyone on here got any ideas? Help is very much appreciated. Cheers

    Stateside Polo

    Just picked up this 1992 Polo here in the US. As you can see it needs a thorough cleaning, the previous owner had it parked in his driveway for sometime before I acquired the car. In its lifetime it was sent to a shop to have an AEB 1.8t swapped into it. Im new to Polos but certainly not new to VW. 👍
  3. Hi all, I'm in a right pickle so any help would be much appreciated. I'm due to hillclimb my G in a couple of weeks but since I got it through MOT it's horrid. Bit of backstory: Bought the car a year ago. Ran rough on idle and had very little power so got the charger re-built at Jabba inc. full service. Performance was like night and day but was still lumpy on idle so unplugged the lambda. Ran better (still not great) until MOT time last month. It failed on a whole load of things, one being emissions which were unsurprisingly through the roof. To get through MOT had to get a new lambda sensor as the old one was fucked apparently when they plugged it in, and fit a new cat as the one on there had been obliterated. So, after much expense (this, welding, steering column, etc.) it got through MOT and felt ok. Drove it 200miles to Devon and back, no probs. After sitting for a week or so last week, went to take it out and all hell broke loose. Wouldn't start (probably battery) so ended up bumping. When it turned over, I couldn't keep it alive. It was idling OK but as soon as I feathered the throttle it'd die. Bumped it again and again with the same result. Managed to limp it back into my driveway with the help of my gf and dad pushing it for a final bump. Has anyone else experienced this? The only course of action I can think of is unplugging the lambda, and replacing the cat with a straight through pipe. This is driving me nuts! 😬

So my car is burning some oil notice it when the car is warmed up get blueish smoke when at a stop idling then pulls away i.e. Traffic lights seems to be ok on the move but then noticeable on the overrun Did a compression test with engine hot Cy1 180psi Cyl 2 180.5 psi Cyl 3 165 psi Cyl 4 180 psi Cyl 3 is a little low but would think is still above spec? Then got a camera down bores to see pistons in order cyl 1 first pic etc Cyl 3 looks the cleanest Also do these look like standard G40 pistons cant really tell?

    Need to free up some funds so my g40 engine is up for sale. Bought it it last year some time when it came up for sale but didn’t intend to use it straight away so I’ve never had it fitted. Doesn't come with any history and obviously I can’t gaurantee it’ll run but I have no reason to think it won’t. It turns over freely. Comes with all the ancillaries, both manifolds, ATV gearbox, ecu, loom, intercooler, some boost pipework, airbox and downpipe. Doesnt come with a charger as I was going to turbo it. Any questions just ask.

    As the title says ran these in my car, these are made for Side Mounted bucket seats but could probably be used for base mounted ones too. Work exactly the same way as original seats mount and served me for long enough, Only reason I am selling as I have welded the mounts in.

  12. Hi all, Came out the other day to give the G a blast after a couple of days standing and it's completely dead. Dashboard lights/radio/headlights all come on but no turn over. Not even a solenoid click I can also hear an electrical motor sound toward the rear which i presume is the fuel pump. I don't think it's the battery as all the electrics work and i've tried jumping it with a battery pack. Anyone got a clue what might be up? My mechanic skills are a work in progress so it's all a learning curve!
  13. Hi all, I've just purchased myself a lovely little g40 and I'd like to colour code the lower parts of the black textured bumpers. I've history of spraying mk3 golf bumpers but this has been easier as the sprayed section of the bumper is not textured. Has anyone got any idea how I can create a smooth and durable finish on the textured polo bumper? Many thanks, Tim

    Mk3 Black G40 Coupe

    Think its about time I whacked up a thread for this as I've owned it over a month! Since I sold my old 6n2, kinda fancied getting back into a polo and successive other old dub projects had failed to scratch the itch (Purple VR6 Corrado that never worked and a Tornado Pink Mk2 Scirocco with a GTi Engineering RE2000 8V conversion) Also having done the VR6 thing, felt it was time to do the supercharged thing too All the way back in February I fuelled up the A5 and went for a trek up the M1 to see @grungeisdead about a dog/geniune G40 that he was selling that had a tasty specification After a long catch up and potter out in it, we came to a deal and I drove back a wrote up the advert for the RE2000 (which took a few months to sell!) Finally got sorted for the weekend before All Types (13th May) settled in for a long train ride up to Leeds So two trains and two and bit hours later, got to the car And a sort out of stuff and gave it a quick clean Quick run down of spec Stainless exhaust HnR Cup suspension with uprated ARB and rose jointed track arms (not sure on that, I've lost the advert and doing this by memory! Stage two charger (with a stage four to be rebuilt ) EBC discs and pads 65 mm pulley Boost gauge Rest is standard G/mk2f stuff So started off on my home, however car had other ideas, a gearbox issue that neither of us spotted or could've predicted reared its head, lost drive at 70mph on the M1 near Rotterham, managed to coast it off the carriageway at J33 and ended up having to be recovered home. Saf being the awesome mega sound dude that he is sorted me another gearbox out and I organised collection of my car by my mates VW garage to get it swapped over In meantime, the car sat on my drive looking sorry for itself so got new plates and holders on along with the obligatory WalshC pikeytech sticker in memory of our departed friend and legend Craig Walsh Also at the same time refurbished the snowflakes I had left over from the scirocco with a Volvo dark grey and slapped on some 195/45/14 Falkens as old 185/60/14 Conti's don't cut it on a G Whilst it was at the garage, it had some good company However we found the replacement box (CEG code) didn't like 5th and kept jumping out (also needed to replace the linkage as I'd broken the ball at the bottom of the stick in order to get it out of gear so could roll for recovery!) So trip to Shropshire for the linkage and a run up to Tibshelf to meet someone halfway for another box (8P this time) and we got it in and back up and running (With an appearance by my dad's new Ateca and my mum's Fabia ) So after lots of brapping about all weekend, set about sorting the matte bonnet that had green coming through And all was well....or so I thought Took it to work on Monday morning just gone, I work 26 miles from home and go M5/M42 and about 7 miles away it started doing odd things and having no power, up until it died on me in the rush hour traffic Queue calling the RAC who said its the alternator, charged me up and followed me to work, however a chat with a few people we agreed it wasn't and set about checking the charge circuit, then found this: ] Left in works secure carpark over night, got lift home and back the next morning but with new strap, tools and battery charger, borrowed electricity off work and got it back in and now seems to be sweet, just goes to show, never take what RAC/recovery say to you as rite! That was until I cut out again on me, this time thankfully just as I pulled onto my drive. After lots of conflab and head scratching and new plugs, couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start, I loaded up my daily A5 to get to Polo Social. Upon the arrival of the Scottish contingent, Steven said to me 'we're going back to yours tomorrow to get the G', never argue with a Scotsman! So we loaded up in two cars, me and @CHRIS2911 in the Audi and @kwijibo_coupe & @citrus in Steven's G-Turbo, we got 20 miles and Steven's clutch cable broke, queue all piling in a 2 door coupe to go to local garage to try a repair/order another. Ended up ordering another cable which would take 3 hours to arrive so we did the jag back to Brum from the other side of Nottingham. We set to work on the G, took the fuel pipe off the rail and cranked it to find not much coming through, so Steven had a look at the pump and we put another 5 litres in to give it the best chance, 3 cranks and 1 failed start it started, sender to gauge appears to be a bit off as it reads 1/4 when its nowhere near! (filled up with 40 litres, did 250 miles of driving and it still reads a 1/4, I think not!) Queue going four up in a G40 (with a video that Steven took ending up on the club's Instagram thanks to Dean!) with a diversion round traffic and stop to adjust the timing, then back to garage for clutch cable, return to fix Steven's car then return to Polo Social (left at 11am, back for 6pm) Saturday afternoon at Polo Social saw a few people descend on it to sort out a few niggles and to refit the front bumper (needs a pair of bumpers really) and codes read and removed by Gaz on Sunday After the show finished decided to give it its first proper clean in my ownership and it came out pretty well (still need to sort out the bonnet!) and lined up with Steven and Scott's cars for the A-polo-clypse photo below (courtesy of @Cymro) So that brings us up to date, still lots to do and maybe improve on (there's no stereo or speakers!) but all in good time, just going to enjoy it for now

I’ve had my g rebuilt and sadly it came back running like a sack of spuds.i recently discovered the car came back with the timing was a tooth and a half out.so I’ve had ago at putting it right myself as I’ve done it numerous times but as soon as I line my marks up and put the belt on and attempt to tighten the water pump the crank pulley mark moves.does anyone have an explanation as to what could be the problem and how I rectify it please.
  18. Hi all, my G40 has an increasingly difficult to engage 1st gear when hot. Been like it for several years. Garages have been unable to do anything, likewise gearbox specialists. I've noticed an oil leak from the front of the engine, if that's anything to do with it. Coming round to the idea of finding a substitute box. So, are there any gearboxes out there that can replace this original one ? (By engaging 2nd gear then 1st and doing this whilst rolling, usually works, but it's getting a right pain and embarrassment.)

  20. Fully rebuilt my engine and I’ve noticed I have a misfire on cylinder number 3.injector 3 is blocked so I’ve ordered a replacement and hoping that solves the problem.if it doesn’t what else could be an issue?
  21. Hey guys n gals. have a few things to ask about the engine bay of ny g40. Ive found several disconnected cables. And some pipes etc that dont go anywhere. Unfortunately im on my iphone and cant upload all the pics so ill put them in some replies. the first one is this. Four connections. Nothing doesnt work. So cant work out where it goes or used to. Its near the header tank.
  22. Hey guys n gals, had this shock absorber taken off of my g40. It has the same at all four corners. The reason it was removed is because the cap that holds it in was missing. The original cap (pictured) does not fit, this means i had to replace with a standard shock. Obviously this isnt ideal and i would like to put the large shock back in. I know it is blistein in make. And i think it is ‘b6’ variant. But i am unable to track down a cap for one. Blistein arnt returning my emails despite asking me for part numbers etc. Can anyone help?

After some advice really the bottom end has gone on my g40 so I’m just curious of what options I have as to which replacements I can put on.i could quite easily Just replace the 2 knakard pistons but it’s going to be a major task to find them.so I’m looking at just putting a different bottom end on just instead.so if anyone can help please let me know thanks.

Been having trouble with my 40 for a few months now which all started with the distributor filling with oil.since then it’s developed an annoying misfire which I have now worked out is happening in cylinder number 2.im just unsure as to what my next move is if I’m honest I’ve done a compression test it’s not great but not bad either.Any advice would be greatly appreciated
  25. Hi guys. Recently bought a g40. It came fitted with a performance subframe of unknown brand. Since then i have discovered that the wheels scrub on the arms that replace the antiroll bar. This has led to them undoing. This happened while driving at speed. The arm came away and has bent. while i could have new ones made (fairly sure i cant buy them) however i feel that the car could just be returned to standard as in the long run this would be safer. Meaning i need a g40 antiroll bar. my question, are they the same as a standard 2f bar? I intend to polybush the car etc with a standard anti roll bar as i see this will give me the safest handling. picutures are of the bent arm on and off the car.
