  1. Hi Everyone! Hope someone on here can help.... I've had this high pitch humming/whistling noise coming from my engine. It happens when I accelerate at a certain point usually heard in the first 3 gears. (noise still is heard when pressing the clutch in) it is also heavily noticeable after switching off the engine as seen in the video. I hope someone knows the issue, sometimes it's barely noticeable, sometimes louder and sometimes does happen at all, so I'm at a loose end with this one! Please see the following video of the noise : (Video has a few different clips, might need to turn the volume up to hear the noise, hard job to do when driving!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjG7Nr33Ymc Car: VW Polo '06 1.2 Litre Cheers, Luke
  2. I'm starting to notice my 2009 9N3 sometimes has trouble starting. It did sit for a while and is now only starting to get used but sometimes I'm turning the key and it just turns but doesn't fire but always starts on the second attempt. I've rear horror stories online from 2007/2008 and on about the 1.2 12v having timing chain slip issues and a revised kit being available however my car is a late (09 Plate) model that was clearly manufactured after this issue being known. Could it still be the case? I hear that the timing can be checked with VCDS which my mate has, should I explore that? I did also have this issue with the idle yesterday - revs were dropping very low when stopped at lights but that seems to have stopped for now. Not sure if it's related. Car only has 52K on the clock.
  3. Hi, I own a 1.2 9n3 Polo (55 plate) I bought it in July 2015 and in October 2015, the check engine light came on. After taking it into a local garage and having it looked at by the mechanic, I was told I would need a new Catalytic Converter. I was also told that for the warranty, I would need both sensors replaced as well. So after nearly £400, it should now all be fixed. The invoice read that a new cat was supplied and an fitted as well as two o2 sensors and the p0420 code was read and cleared. Two days ago the check engine light has came on again. This time, I have an OBD-II reader and plugged that in. The reader showed one error code, p0420, the same as last time. So as it stands I am potentially looking at the replacement cat having failed only 13 months on from being fitted. I'm hoping that someone can help shed some more light on this situation for me so that I am not spending over the odds on repairs that are not needed. As far as I am aware, the cat is aftermarket. I was wondering if these come with a specific kind of warranty with them? (I asked a different local garage yesterday and was told that most exhaust parts should come with a two year warranty - is this true?). If it is covered under warranty, is it for the garage who carried out the repair to replace at no extra cost or would I have to pay the labour? Is there anything I can try out first before paying for another repair? Is it okay to drive still and is it worth taking it out on a drive to try and clear it if anything has built up? Are there any checks I can carry out to try and single out the problem? Thanks!
  4. Hi, got a 1994 1043cc MK2f owned it for almost a year. 3 days ago the car really began struggling to start. It turns over for a while and with a lot of encouragement from the throttle it will eventually get going. Once it is running it is absolutely fine, no problems what-so-ever. It's due a service which I did tonight (was given the wrong spark plugs and fuel filter so those will be done tomorrow). Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue. Had a little look through FAQs and think rotor arm, dist cap & HT leads might be worth replacing. Thanks in advance
  5. Hi guys, so a few nights ago I got in my car, with it already in reverse I engaged the clutch all the way in then started the engine to reverse out of the space, as I started the engine the car started to move on it's own without me lifting the clutch, I quickly knocked it out of gear and went to select 1st but it wouldn't budge into any gear at all. At this point I decided to use the old trick of selecting 2nd engine off and starting without the clutch so I could atleast get her home, half way back in 2nd I tried the clutch again and everything seemed fine. This problem has occurred a few times the past few days. My initial thought was that my clutch had gone but with the problem being intermediate I'm starting to doubt. What else could be causing this release bearing ? Or my latest thought the actual fork, needing some advise ! Polo 6n 1.0L 114k Clutch replaced last August.
  6. Hi all, decided to join today mainly due to a problem with my MK4, but also because I hope to learn more about cars in general. My issue is with the wipers. If I use the delay wipe, sometimes it happens with other wiper settings, after a while the wipers will cut out. The temporary fix for this is to restart the car, but that is very dangerous when it is raining really hard and I'm on the motorway. After cutting out, they sort of start working again, but to get them to move in a full wiper movement, I have to hold the wiper stick down. Eventually they start to work automatically again, but will inevitably cut out again after more use. What could be causing this issue? It is also strange that the back wiper is not affected. Any advice on how to fix this will be great, as the autumn rains are arriving in full force in the North West UK! Thanks Tom Richardson
