  1. Anyone know how to set up the bolts on the coupling of a 4 speed MK2 gearbox, I can't seem to get the bolts tight and still be able to select all the gears. I don't understand the Haynes instructions to be honest. With the screw (right hand in pic) not fully tightened I can engage 3 & 4, but 1 & 2 are only available by pressing in the stick as if for reverse. Reverse cannot be achieved. Any advice from someone who's done this before would be much appreciated.
  2. Hi there! I'm new to this forum as I have just bought myself a polo 6n2 1.4 16v as a present for my son who is in need of his own car. I bought the car a little sporadically (on a well known internet auction site!) and as such did not have time to test drive it. The good thing is I got it rather cheap, although there does seem to be something wrong when choosing gears. With the engine cold and running it is hard to 'find the gears'. It is almost as though you have to meander down a path to find each of them - however you can get it into ever gear! I know very little about gearboxes/ linkages, could someone please help tell me what is likely wrong and the best way to fix the problem? I am pretty handy and have this week off work so I don't mind getting my hands dirty! I am able to add a video if that helps? Many thanks, Sam
  3. Good afternoon all, After I finished work last night, I quickly realised that I was unable to put the car into 1st, 2nd or reverse gear. Luckily I managed to crawl home in 3rd & 4th. The clutch feels fine and the pedal box was replaced only a few months ago (I have checked this too and it's not cracked). I don't know anything about gearboxes or gear linkages. My Haynes manual doesn't give me much information about this either. Is this a common fault? Does anyone know how to fix this? Cheers Ben
  4. Hi there Pretty sure the gear linkage has just failed on my girlfriend's 6n 1.4 CL. It had been sticky previously and there have been times where selecting 2nd and 4th were impossible, but on my way home it failed completely and the gearbox is now stuck in first gear (can't even take it out of gear from inside the car). I'm looking to replace the linkage setup asap as it's our daily, but am struggling to find one for this model. Are there any linkage/cable setups from other models that would fit ours, ie 6n2 or 6n 1.2? I'm asking as I have a spare Mk3 Golf GTI (ABF) setup here, but am not sure if it's suitable? I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to gear stuff, so any advice or help would be very much appreciated! Thanks :)
  5. Hello guys, just joined this site to see if i can get som help on a problem i just stumbled upon. I realised during my vacation that i only had one gear on my Polo whatever the position of my stick shift was in. I think it was fifth or third gear... however, when i got home I jacked the car up to see how well the linkage worked during gearchanges and it was a mess... there was some sort of plastic thing called Gaterod (Selector/Gear Lever, Partnumber 6N0 711 575A) which is just poped into place on 2 ballheads in the linkage, it had poped out from one connections and as you tried to pop it back on it felt kinda weak or like it didn't want to stay attached to the lower ball head, but the thing that was scaring me even more was that one of the selector cables were totally ruined, so it needs to be fixed in one way or another. some information about the car: Volkswagen Polo 6N -98 1,6 engine called "AEE" Gearbox 085 (DKE?) (dual-cable operated) so... to my question. As you can see the linkage cable connector to the gearbox mechanics is totaled (looks like it could have been some sort of bushing there a while ago) and I want to know if there's some sort or replacement bushing for these type of cables or if you really have to buy a brand new cable and replace it with the old. I've been searching the web without any success so i've been thinking a little bit and came up with an idea of creating something myself that would fit inside the cable connector, like a piece of aluminium or stainless steel to also make it more like a shortshift feeling. What do you think guys? I'm scepteical to just buy a new cable with rubber bushing, mostly because the cable is still intact and it's just this "bush" that is ruined.
  6. I have had a problem since I put in my new clutch kit, I can't seem to find reverse gear, and when I finally think i have, it seems to me that the engine is selecting first instead of reverse. I got told its my linkage or selector, any help would be much appreciated. :) selector
