    MK2f Saloon Project

Hello all, this is my first post. I bought a mk2f saloon last september, previously modified by the person i bought it from in the style of the US ski team (i dont know why... but it was fun) Anyway since buying it i have done a number of things, namely taking the skis off of the roof and replacing the ski pole gear stick (hahaha) for a normal one. Things i've also done: Changed petrol tank, fixed gear linkage, filled rust hole underneath battery (my foot got wet while driving in the rain), service (new plugs and filters all round), fitted rally fog lights My current issue is electrical. I thought i had a weak battery as it wasn't starting quite regularly, so a while ago i changed the battery. But this didn't seem to fix the issue and after having it hooked up to the mains for a couple weeks i found a scrap yard near me which luckily had a mk2f coupe sitting there, so i took the alternator off of that one and replaced mine. That seemed to do the trick immediately after, giving the battery charge, yet the charging system warning light has now come on on the dash, where as it wasn't there when i did have issues! I tested it with a multimeter and my tests seemed to show that the alternator was working, but now the same thing is happening, if the caf is left for a day or more then it won't start when i next go back to it. By the way this is my first car, and i'm learning everything on it, so bear with me if my knowledge is lacking!

    085 OR 02T?

well its been a while since i was last on here!! originally joined in 2009 with a coupe, now a mk1 astra, 3 coupes, a nova and an e30 later i'm back in a breadvan! surprise surprise the box is bust..... if anyone knows the type that would be lovely as im ordering 5th gear repair kit, would it be 085 or 02T for mine? its a 92, 1.3 86cf box.
  5. My 2f Polo has failed it's MOT as the main beam tell tale bulb has blown. Unlike the rest of the warning lights, which are LEDs, it's a tungsten bulb with a blue cap over it. Can anyone help me source a replacement bulb? Or give me directions on fitting an LED in it's place?
  6. Does anyone know where I can get an exhaust for my mk2f saloon? Theres seems to be plenty of mk2 coupe and breadvan exhausts around, but i cant seem to find any for a saloon. I am planning on putting a new stainless manifold on and would like the pipe to be 2" all the way, but i don't know if this would be really hard to find? Would it be something i would have to custom-fabricate? (and buy a welder)? Thanks

Mk3 Polo from the Emerald Isle

Hi Folks 🙋‍♂️ A few months ago with the encouragement from a few close friends of mine I took the leap and decided to buy a project car. After looking around for a while, nothing seemed to catch my eye. So the search continued, and one day I stumbled across a little MK3 polo for sale. The car was advertised as needing painted .... LOL So I went to view the car and this was the shape it was currently and actually the way I bought it the car surprisingly needs little welding but has had the interior ripped out as previous owner had planned on turning into a van but hey ho I'm sure you guys on here will help guide me to completion of this project. Mk2f polo 1.0 4 speed 51,000 There has been a lot of changes and planning this last few months which I shall update you all with soon.
  10. Hello, My MK2F gas tank is leaky and I'm in need for a fix. I found a parts car that I want several things from, but it's carbed. Is there any difference, as the online shops im looking at are offering two different options? And if there are, is it possible to overcome them?

    Idle issues

Hello, I have an issue with the idle, i've got a 1.6 single point injection swap in my polo and the idle drops so low the whole dash rattles, but it isnt steady, it fluctuates, like it is trying to keep it up. When I hold my foot on the gas pedal lightly, there are no fluctuations in the engine rpm, drives and runs fine for what it is. Was thinking the 1.05-1.3liter SPI are pretty much the same engines, and maybe someone has encountered this issue. Could it be a vacuum leak?

    Mk2f Polo CL 'The Breadbin'

Bought this as our runaround but also as a bit of a project, or at least it turned into one the more I found wrong with it! Was 143k when I got it, numerous previous owners and full of bodges. My partner (who is a kiwi) called it the 'Breadbin' instead of breadvan and it kind of stuck! Here it was when I picked it up - had no idea what I was getting myself into... The first drive was interesting getting used to such a spartan car (last car was a Volvo 240, although I had a Trabant 601 before that so don't know what I was complaining about!) Huge list of un-photographed fixes including heates rear windscreen, foglights, chair adjuster knobs, re-sealing the door membranes to stop a constant leak. First big change to make was the sunroof - sealed shut by a previous owner. Got the thing out with copious amounts of elbow grease, WD40 and a plastic bicyle tyre lever as a scraper. Sanded and painted, few coats of 2K clearcoat. All rattlecans as I don't have the space (nor the compressor) to do things with a gun. Came out nice though. Next was the boot lid as it was starting to rust through and the inside lip for the window seal was corroding. Luckily a clubmember had a nice spare one to buy Had a few scuffs on the new lid so painted those up. Love this blue! Bit of a hassle getting the old one off - thank god for neighbors. Much cleaner!
  13. I have just bought a mk2f polo breadvan but have found most of the driver side sill is shot and possibly the floor pan. I was wondering if anyone knows of somewhere to buy floor pans for the mk2f as I haven't been able to find any.
  14. Hi I've got a 93 polo mk2f and the battery keeps draining. I had the alternator replaced recently and have been assured that's not the problem. Guy from the garage seems to think its mechanically sound and there's an electrical fault somewhere. Had my battery tested and was told it's 96% capacity so think I can rule that out. I'm thinking its a electrical fault somewhere but don't know where to start. When I got the car the car I noticed a few electrical issues: CD player not working - Initially worked but stopped connecting to speakers out of the blue, the player itself was working. Have disconnected since Dash lights don't work (driving at night is fun), but can control brightness of heater switches with the adjuster for the dash lights. Petrol gauge isn't working Wondering if anyone knows if these could be the issue or something else? And if any of them could just be down to fuses. Not sure where to find fuses for this! Appreciate any help. Cheers
  15. Hi All I have a 1994 VW Polo Mk2 Facelift Genesis with 45400 miles on the clock available. The car has 2 owners from new and was last owned by my next-door neighbour’s dad who passed away a couple of years ago. The intention was to give the car a quick go over and back on the road, but I started doing this, and then that, then circumstances changed and now the car is up for breaking or someone who wants a job lot. I need the space back and willing to give it a couple of months but then Mr scrap man will have a treat. I will get some pictures up over the next week. Interior is in near perfect condition, abit dust and the dash has a mark where some sticky tape was but apart from that, not torn or worn front or back. Engine has done 45400 miles, I drove it into my drive from next door, sounded ok, with a blown exhaust, looks like it could do with a new dizzy cap and rotor along with a rubber rocker seal. 5 speed gearbox all gears working and smooth. Basically, all parts are up for grabs; panels, glass, looms, seals, trims, lights...... All items are ‘make me an offer’. I am located between Basingstoke and Fleet. Bad parts I am thinking the spings/shocks are original so will be no good, they are not leaking but prob not worth it. If anyone is interested in the shell; Front slam panel has had minor bump and where the fuel filler neck rusted out it got abit of the sill and arch which I have started to fix, one sides basically done. Passenger rear arch needs attention. Ok/Pretty good parts New drivers wing has been fitted and sealed already but can come off. Passenger wing, it had a minor dent on delivery which is easy to fix. Bonnet was perfect before I started to rub it down so will need finishing off and a spray. Bumpers are not cracked but the brackets might need attention for a 100% as new fit. I have refurbished the doors as the bottoms had the usual minor rust, they basically need a rubdown and spraying. Interior is all good from carpet to sunroof. Brand new parts – all prices are ‘make me an offer’, we all know/can lookup the new price and willing to take a second-hand to almost giveaway if buying multiple items. Front disc / pad brakes, pagid Fuel tank Clear front indicators Rear brake drum cylinders + brake shoes Tie rods x2, brand new, fitted only used to roll the car in and out 3 or 4 times. Both steering arms ARB rubbers, front OEM
  16. Hi folks Recently picked up this 5 speed box for my Polo as a spare part. I've cleaned it up a bit to try and see the code but the numbers/letters I can make out don't seem to tally to any of the codes I've seen that were used in the Mk2/3 Polo's. Does any have an idea what it might be? To me it looks like 8CWN??075 TIA

    Stateside Polo

Just picked up this 1992 Polo here in the US. As you can see it needs a thorough cleaning, the previous owner had it parked in his driveway for sometime before I acquired the car. In its lifetime it was sent to a shop to have an AEB 1.8t swapped into it. Im new to Polos but certainly not new to VW. 👍
  18. Recently when cold, my car engine sounds a bit "tappy". It quietens down once warm, and I can only hear it when the engine is revved a little. Sometimes it goes completely. It might be worn tappets. Are they expensive to replace? Is it cheaper to try an oil change?
  19. Hi! I have an issue with my current (and previous engine to some extent) I have this noise that drives me nuts, previous engine was quite worse, but IIRC pretty much similar. On the previous engine I changed rod bearings, tappets, even piston rings (while I was in there as I wanted to check if there is any play in the wrist pin), and the noise still persisted. On the current one I only swapped out the tappets to ones that felt solid to squish. Is this tappet noise? Youtube link here Any help would be appreciated. P.S. it sort of loud as I currently don't have an exhaust on postcat.

  23. Hi all, Next up on my list of MOT failures are the front anti-roll bar bushes. The ones on my motor seem to be different from the standard mk2f ones (see pic) Does anyone know where I can source some? Cheers as always, Tim
  24. Hi in am at the stage now after engine bay and wheel arch respray on fitting the engine and front wings . I noticed before I took the wings off i had to remove the rubber type sealer that was on the body between the wing . It's the section at the top of tthe wing you bolt down . I don't want to bond the wings on just same stuff use from factory kind of flexible sealer ? Any help and advice is welcome.
