  1. I'm about to pull the engine on my 84 mk2 breadvan and I'm going to fully rebuild with some gt parts and porting work for fun. Is it worth doing the bottom end too? I was thinking of leaving it. Is there anything engine/not engine related that you guys would recommend I take a look at and replace whilst its out that I might not know about? I can see theres a bunch of full engine gasket sets on ebay... is there a particular one I should go for or will any do. I'd like to work on the gearbox too, again is there anything I can replace in there? which oil does it need and how much? Cheers
  2. To save weight, I was looking at building up an engine around an alloy block, but read a few times the block distorts if the crank mains get removed. Sounds suspect to me, I hope someone can confirm if its true or BS to cover up a bad rebuild?
  3. Hey guys! Winter is coming and I don't really plan to need my Polo that much Thus I'm thinking to invest some time in tinkering with it. I will soon start a build thread for it, as I initially got it just for a backup car, but now I want to "play" with it . Before that thou, I wanted to ask some questions, about things that I'm not fully clear on I do have some power issues with the car. The clutch cable and the clutch itself were garbage when I got the car, and I fixed them, but the shop didn't do a good job with the clutch cable and I'll need to replace it again - the clutch pedal is very heavy, noisy, sticks often and doesn't release smoothly. Still when I compare the car to my brother's Polo (same engine but AUA), there is very noticeable difference in how the car accelerates and how much easier and quicker it revs - it did also have clutch and cable changed at about the same time. It is good to mention that the AUA Polo hasn't seen proper maintenance in about 3-4 years, while in the past 2 years it was running with a faulty head - losing a lot of oil and coolant regularly. Still after a simple head gasket change, clutch and cable it runs times better than the AHW Polo that seemingly doesn't have anything wrong with it... Both Polos have their Cats removed, where for the AHW I have a whole new exhaust, except the manifold. So, either way I do plan to service the engine of the AHW Polo. And I do have the bold idea of trying to do it myself, mostly as a challenge What I want to do: 1. Service the head: - new set of inlet and exhaust valves - new valve seals - polish on the head and the valve beds - outsource - new gasket 2. Block - probably just cleaning the cylinders and changing the rings 3. Timing belt - belt, pulleys, water pump, etc. Most of the things above are fairly well documented, and I shouldn't find it very hard to do, but I do plan on upgrading the engine in the future at two-three stages, and wanted to know if I should plan ahead, if I'm opening the head Stage 1 - GTI upgrade I already have inlet and exhaust manifolds + throttle body from a GTI. I do plan of adding them after servicing the engine. And as far as I know I will need to remap the ECU for the new throttle body Question 1: Should I even bother with trying to remap the ECU myself, when the change is only the throttle body. An ECU tool is fairly cheap and I think it should be a nice entry level job At a later stage I might go for the supercharging fun, but wanted to ask about the engine mods that I see being done around it - fast road camshafts, decompression plates, bigger valves, etc. Question 2: Should these things be done to the engine only when adding the supercharger, or they can be done earlier? - are these the cams I should be looking for? - can somebody quote me which bigger valves are being used in such a set up - would a CLK W208 supercharger do the trick? Question 3: If I decide not to go for airflow mods, should I just add better cam shafts to the GTI mod and call it a day? Do the new cam shaft (either from a 101hp 1.4 16v or a fast road one) require a remap? Note: I was thinking about an engine swap, but I decided to play with this engine. I do have a bigger engine car and I am not really looking to make this Polo be something crazy.

    My 6n2 Gti Build

So i decided to take my polo of the road about a month ago due to the amount of problems i was having with it and it was meant to just be a engine swap and now its going to be more! I started this on here in the hope that people will appreciate what i'm doing and also help me in what i'm doing when i'm stuck on certain things because someone has always done it on here!

    '98 Polo 6n 1.0 L Full Respray

Hello, thought I'd share with Club Polo, me and my dads project of respraying my first car, a 1998 Polo 6N 1.0L. Short story of how it ended up in my ownership... It's one owner from new, an old bloke bought it brand new back in November 98, and ran it till he gave up driving a couple of years ago, and it was salvaged by my dad, as I was basically about to turn 17, I asked him if I could have it, it was either a Polo or 1999 fiesta, I chose the polo because its interior was clean as whistle, basically brand new because of the seat covers. The outside however... it was parked up under a tree for over a year, so there was a serious amount of green which came off the car when it was steam cleaned. I passed my test at the end of January and off I was in my little red polo! 2 months later... I'm pretty sick of the bodywork on the car now, the lacquer was already coming off everywhere, and its just an eye-saw. Dad told me to get prepping the outside, so i roughly sanded most of the car off in a day. drove it around for a bit with the 'rat look'. Now though is where the final preparations are taking place for it to be painted... I say final preparations, turns out the car is obliterated with tiny little dents everywhere as we sand it down, these all have to be filled up of course because my dads a perfectionist and clearly doesn't want to spoil his reputation when I'm a driving around example of his work (he prepares and resprays cars for a living by the way). The original colour of the car is (i believe) 'Flash Red', we're painting it in Alfa Romeo Rosso red, because he has loads left over from painting a Alfa Sprint Veloce. I reckon this will make it look pretty sharp. Today... I fitted FK Automotive Coilovers all round, bought them from a nice bloke called Matt in Lee-on-Solent, also bought some Golf Mk2 GTI 14" Steels from him, tried those out on the car and they look awesome with the car lowered too. That's about as far as we've got at the moment. Will update and include pictures ASAP. Thanks for reading : )

  7. Hi all, No have just done a full rebuild of a 16v AFH engine, I've put it into my car and it runs but doesn't like to idle....timing is correct everything is connected...cold it won't run without revs till warm....even then it's hunting for revs and the anti stall is kicking in.... Any ideas? Thanks Tank
  8. Can anyone help with the cylindrical roller bearings that are in the clutch end of 084 4 speed gearbox that the primary and secondary shaft run in. I am rebuilding it at present with new bearings and seals. I have all the bearings except the ones described. I have tried a lot of websites that sell obsolete bearings and the local VW dealer with no luck. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Regards Phil
  9. Hi all, I need some help! I've got a 6n2 GTI that needs an top end rebuild as the engine was tapping. I thought it may be a sticky hydraulic tappet, so I shoved some engine flush through as a kill or cure solution. Typically, as my luck would have it... I killed it! The valve stem oil seals are shot and the tapping has stayed. So I need to have a bit of a rebuild. The last engine that I rebuilt was an aircooled Beetle engine, so I need a bit of advice on what parts I should buy in readiness for the engine removal, strip down, rebuild and re-installation. I'm thinking I need: Valve stem oil seals x 16 Head gasket Exhaust gasket 'Instant' gasket for rocker cover and sump Cambelt kit... might as well while it's in bits! I was hoping to find some miracle kit on GSF or similar like I used to buy for my aircooled engines, but it's not that simple! Can I ask for your help to make sure I get all I need? Any suggestions welcome. Cheers Andy
  10. Hi all, I have a 1.3 6n I'm thinking of scrapping and want to keep the engine to put into my 1.0 coupe. When its out of the car i'm thinking about stripping it down and rebuilding it. I was just wondering whats the main components that you would change/upgrade? Thanks Elis
