  1. Hi all, my 1.4 8v polo (AEX) is having some odd issues, they’re not much of a problem at the moment but want to nip anything in the bud. 90% of the time it idles fine but occasionally it’ll idle at a noticeable higher speed for 10-20 seconds and then drop down to a near stall before stabilising again. Recently I’ve also noticed that sometimes if I stall the car it’ll be very sluggish to start again, struggling at about 500rpm until I give it some throttle, it’ll run fine again after that. I’m wondering if this has anything to do with the temp sensor? It seems to heat up fine and show on the gauge but the gauge has never, ever moved past about 90, even on 5+ hour motorway trips. my other thought was the PCV valve? I often get a very oily petrol smell when stationary with the blowers on, and there’s a fair coating of oil in the air box.(level has never noticeably dropped while I’ve owned the car however) Any idea what I can do to test all these, should I even be worried? Cheers
  2. Hey guys, as per title im trying to solve a rough idle and cutting out, I’ve cleaned up the throttle body and that’s not solved it, just wondering if the pipe in the picture is supposed to be like it is? back story is that I bought the car a year ago as a project and am finally getting around to doing it, first job is to get it MOT ready, didn’t start at all at first but new battery solved that, now it’s just really rough on idle. also noticed the smoke comes out of the breather pipe that goes into the left side of the air box, had a google and that appears to be about right, have tried to look for cracks or damaged pipes but can’t find anything!
  3. Hi I would like to ask if anyone could shed any light on the following problem which has been getting worse during the last 6 months. When cold (damp weather too) the car will cold idle badly. Driving like this will make it jump/hesitate around 1200-2000rpm any gear. It does not like the accelerator pressed too quickly. If I drive 2 miles then switch off, it will NOT start again - only turn over. Leaving it for 10-15mins it will start ok again and then idle & run smoothly. Again, once the initial problem has gone, the car runs nicely for the rest of the day. The car has new fuel filter (correct one) and new oil separator. I have tested the imp values of the HT leads and coil pack and all values seem as per std. Every year I normally remove and clean out the throttle body too with TB cleaner and toothbrush. Spark plugs seem ok (3 pin Bosch as per Haynes Manual I have bought) Air filter is new Sometimes I add injector cleaner to petrol whilst filling up. I can think of the following possibilities but would like to hear from someone with more experience, ....rather than just replacing the list of items below (expensive) 1) injectors ? 2) coolant temp sensor ? 3) clean TB again ? (last time 1yr ago) 4) coil pack micro crack in plastic case + damp weather ? (although the car is fine for the rest of the day) 5) new plugs ? 6) MAF or air related problem / TB dirty / TB idle control ? 7) anything else ? I greatly appreciate any constructive tips to resolve this relatively new problem which for the last 8 years had never occurred. Thanks Phil
  4. My 2003 polo 1.2 6V has had a rough idle ever since i bought it (3 months ago) and to date still don't know what is causing it. There is a large amount of water present in the exhaust but I'm thinking that's just built up condensation because it stops coming out after about 20mins at idle there is no water in oil or oil in water and the coolant level has not changed since i got it. I have replaced multiple sensors around the engine with no avail and have tried compression tests, all grand on all 3 cylinders, replaced all the ignition coils and spark plugs, and ran scans on the car but with no error codes coming up. The car starts perfect every time telling me its not the timing. This really has me stumped as it sounds fine for about 5 seconds after starting but then becomes dreadful anyone have any idea?
