Recently when cold, my car engine sounds a bit "tappy". It quietens down once warm, and I can only hear it when the engine is revved a little. Sometimes it goes completely. It might be worn tappets. Are they expensive to replace? Is it cheaper to try an oil change?
oldtech posted a topic in Engine, Transmission and ExhaustI've noticed in the past month or so what I thought was tappets squeaking. It's not really tappy; just a hint of 'tinkle'. It's loud enough to be obvious in the car. Then I found it would go away when the lights are turned off, and come back when switched on. It also seems more noticeable when first started cold, and can only be heard at idle or when throttle is blipped (hence me thinking it was the tappets) - cold alternator bearings? The alternator bearings do rumble. If the sound isn't the tappets, is it alternator loading down with the lights? Or can engine load down with lights causing sound in some way?
Hi I have a polo 6R 2013 1.4 (CGGB) I have been hearing a rattling noise for a few months now. The noise seems to happen only when the engine is cold but goes away when the engine warms up. I have changed the oil and flushed the engine before putting new oil in. This hasn't fixed the issue. When I drive the car the rattle is a lot more louder but goes away when warm. I have had the exhaust inspected and it's fine. The noise seems to be coming from the top of the engine. I don't know whether it's the tappets or even the piston. I help advice please Thanks Adil
