  1. Opinions please. My water pump is noisy. If was fitted before I got the car with a new timing belt. I've checked the parts and they appear to be correct for the vehicle. The belt seems too tight between the pump and camshaft sprocket. Can barely get it to turn 90 degrees, but the water pump is adjusted as far clockwise as it will go, I can't get it any slacker. Any ideas from anyone?
  2. timing belt change on the afh it seems the drive pulley which sits on the crank pulley covers a little of the timing belt tensionor bolt which doesn't allow a torque wrench to go over the bolt. it's a daft design if im right, it means you have to take off the drive pulley , undo the alternator tensioner, take off drive belt. anyone here done a belt change on afh?
  3. Hi all, when I bought my 6n (1.4 CL) the bloke I got it from told me his father had done the timing belt in 2016 at what can only be 10K miles ago. He had No receipts or anything to prove but being a silly youth I bought the car. It has now occurred to me that the timing belt to me does not look all that “fresh”. Has a kind of thin zebra pattern on the back of the belt buT I can still read the Print. See pics attached, is changing the belt a hard job? My Haynes manual always makes jobs seem more complicated than they really are. Cheers in advance
  4. Hello tihis is my first post and this is my first cage a 96 polo 6n1 1.4 8v AEX... My question is. i recently changed the timing belt and water pump and tensioner with a Gates kit... with the old stuff the belt run off set on the top pulley and still does it with the new kit is this normal on this model..? the new belt also now whines when the engine is hot, the tensioner was set at the middle of the notch after the bolt... Thanks in advance
  5. Hi, I'm looking for a new timing belt and there are more than one available online and I don't want to count the teeth on my existing belt.... The engine numbers don't match the ones on website whatsoever on euro car parts, been looking for ages and I'm getting bored of it! Looked at a previous post and it said there were at least 3 different belts and didn't really help me much! I've got a L reg 1994 1.0l coupe. If anyone can help or point me in the right direction that would be great!
  6. My timing belt slipped and at least 8 of the 16 valves are damaged. Also have a problem with my gear linkages, and the mechanic said I may as well replace the clutch if they sort out the gear linkages. Water pump will also need replacing. Estimated cost is at least £2000, I bought the car for £1700. Is it worth repairing, or is there a better option to get it fixed? If I don't get it fixed, I'll try to sell it as non-runner, as the car only has about 42 000 miles on it and is in great condition.
  7. Sooo, did a complete overhaul on my 1.4 16v. Clutch, timing belt, drivebelt, had to rebore manifold threaded holes as they were knackered. Turned it on for the first time yesterday and it made some horrible noises. I think I have messed up the timing as when the engine turned over the first few times it sounded as if the pistons or maybe valves were pumping/operating at a much higher speed than the engine. Very strange. Also with the top cam cover off the belt spins slower than the drivebelt. I am confused and also concerned. HELP?!

Hi, I had a rattle in the drive shaft so took it to a garage who said the biggest problem was a knackered timing belt and that should be first priority, once again my ignorance with cars comes to the fore and I have to admit to getting confused with the terminology of the various belts, cam belts, timing belts etc and where exactly they are. I believe the timing belt is under the engine cover which if true it surprises me that the garage found it, I did mention that a belt to the left of the engine as you look at it appeared to be making a little noise and might be loose but that's all I said in passing. The belt to the left of the engine, is that a cam belt? I hate not knowing these things! He also said I would need to replace the water pump as it runs of the timing belt, though I have no idea why I would need to do this and why the timing belt can't simply be swapped out? Anyone know how much one would go for? I'm getting quite an expensive quote... Finally, for my 6N, does anyone know the correct replacement milage for the timing belt? My warranty says I am covered but only if it was replaced on time and as I've only had it 2 months and bought it second hand I have no idea if it has been! :(
