Finally got the satnav working, after buying two sets of "Copied" discs that it couldn't read, bought a genuine, if out of date 2008 disc. also found the GPS aerial was dead, the outer screening of the cable had corroded and wasn't making contact with the aerial, so chopped the wire shorter and re-soldered the connections now all OK :)

Also bought an adapter lead that plugs into the 10 pin DIN socket on the rear of the unit, so you can plug any phone/ipod/mp3 with a 3.5mm jack

Tried to replace the pollen filter but at some point in the cars life it had a replacement screen fitted and they must of fitted the scuttle trim panels before the screen adhesive had set !! after a lot of swearing and pulling they came off

No wonder the airflow into the car was a bit poor !!

New & old

Unfortunately the windscreen didn't fair so well !!

So new screen required !!

Decided to attack the rust spots on the tailgate

Treated them with Hammerite "Kurust" and then some grey primer

Will need another going over with the primer and some hi-build primer but the weather forecast for the next couple of days doesn't look good for outdoor spraying !!

needs to be flattened down and polished but not bad for a rattle can finish??

9FAF3B25-87A6-4D9B-ADAB-9D4F1C24F4D2_zps

Still getting good MPG

Load cover was the wrong colour for the rest of the internal (baby crap brown)

F8D1FB9A-400E-479F-985C-B94B95FFEC2C_zps

Found a correct colour one on eBay

Next on the modifications was to fit a multi function steering wheel

A9524882-56B6-4773-AC52-9EEBFADDA4AF_zps

D48ECC6F-3573-4433-BF4F-B11C760E1C26_zps

2FA53466-CD45-4382-BE91-BFF614B001E4_zps

Multi function control unit

E2667E20-2C93-42CF-B17E-7C0E850DDB7B_zps

Crap VAG design for holding the indicator/wiper stalks onto the steering column

1FF1B492-EF26-4A4B-AEB4-310438DD1A30_zps

New wheel fitted but controls are from a Golf 4 hence the red backlighting :(

85A23A88-244F-41C0-AF0B-EC417017A0ED_zps

So dismantled the right one and replaced the LEDs with Green to match the rest of the backlighting

9BF15FF2-1BD1-490E-8B78-D8B20E85DF9F_zps

But now I have some Blue LEDs so I might swap to them ??

Next item to arrive was this, TMC Rx/controller for dynamic traffic update/re-routing on the satnav

C6F440BE-5189-47A9-8B14-BF85B532F964_zps

Simple to install, power supply, ground & two CAN bus wires to the satnav, the normal aerial system connects to this now first then another aerial lead from this to the normal radio aerial input on the satnav unit

The "Sharks fin" aerial I fitted was OK for radio reception if you didn't go more than 10 miles from the transmitter. so It's been replaced by a genuine VAG combined AM/FM, GSM & GPS unit so that the TMC unit can get a good signal, decided to have look inside

53068A95-C342-4281-9301-FD84C2C37901_zps

00175197-0D9C-4D92-86F6-788227D01132_zps

As you can see the connection for the AM/FM, GSM is by that flat spring hook, so if your having poor reception on your standard aerials it's probably poor connection (corrosion) between that hook and the contact inside the aerial cover :)

The windscreen was eventually replaced, the appointment was 6 weeks after I reported it !!

Time wrap this one up, it was off to the scrappy today

1243451123_ByeByeOcty.thumb.jpeg.6ddf5477b83aa09f68851f1b1cbec514.jpeg

It had been a great car but a failing left knee and hips made it painful to drive so it was time to go, it has been replaced with a Touareg 3l V6 tiptronic

Gear change? New clutch slave cylinder on the gearbox makes it less effort.

L&K have cruise control.

Shame, I would have had the tow-bar off you.

and the grill.

and the window deflectors.

and the front bumper.

hm, which scrappy?

Enjoy the Toerag Touareg.

@dvderlm I did try to remove the Heko window deflectors but alas that was another of the failing systems all the windows stopped working so couldn't get them off, I did contemplate removing the towbar but time was against me, where I have to park is questionable as to it's "off road" status for SORN purposes, my last car the Seat Ibiza was reported to the council parking dept and they gave me 5 days to remove it and as the Octy had been sitting for nearly 2 months I didn't want to risk it again, the only things I did remove were the Xenon headlights, OEM Satnav and the full screen DIS speedo

@Jim1500 apart from various electrical things working intermittantly like the windows and central locking, the engine was running in the most part OK but it was suffering from the usual turbo failure (sticking vanes) and I couldn't be a**ed doing the Mr Muscle cleaning again, it was getting harder to start even during the summer months (so ruling out the glowplugs) and the fuel consumption was getting worse, last full tank gave an average of 26.5mpg it was around 55mpg when I first got it, the fuel pump timing was spot on according the graphing on VCDS so not sure why the consumption had halved ?
