First Project Car

Recommended Posts

Adim_GTI

Consider this my build thread, as the title suggests this is my first project car! I never really intended to own a polo as I was initially planning to buy another golf, but I fell in love with this little coupe after a run around the block in it. Here are a few pics of what I am starting with!

Thanks! it is in surprisingly good condition for original paintwork (although the pictures show it better than it is in person ahah)
First job will be a full stainless exhaust, engine bay tidy up and repaint and then considerable time will be spent on the interior
I'm also still trying to pick out a set of wheels similar to the Ronal turbos

Fitted a gauge cluster in the space where the radio was. I made the fascia from mild steel sheet, bored three 2" holes in and painted it satin black with mounts made internally to secure in place. All the faces are back lit for visibility in low light. I'm quite happy with the result even if it means no more tunes!!

Yeah I am pretty lucky I have got white paint in the condition it is in, (Believe me I'v seen some that'd pass as a rat rod!) I'm just being fussy as I'm used to having paint that looks like glass on my other cars

Haven't posted in a while so I think it is time for an update. Had a fair few mechanical issues after buying the car mainly due to the carb, so I decided it was time to replace all the gaskets and give it a good service before putting it back together. It also gave me the chance to tidy up the inlet manifold and bay a little too

Finally sorted a set of rims! They still need a refurb and I'm undecided if I should repaint the centres or not? But hey, better than rolling on steelies!!

With a tunnel run planned over Easter it only made sence to sort the exhaust! I went with a Novus back box and self made straight section. Sound wise I can't complain, however the exhaust hanger on the back box needs addressing as it hangs far too low!

Began addressing the issue of rust and generally weathered paint. Stripped back to bare metal and given a fresh coat of alpine white

Despite not long after rebuilding the carb, I had issues with not being able to balance it (or even getting the car to run eventually) so I bit the bullet and 'invested' in a new Weber carb

Initial prototype had served its purpose, but never truly looked finished, mainly because of clearance issues, so the cluster was remade with some spare stainless sheet I had lying around. Now all it needs is a lick of satin black paint and I'm calling it done!

Finally tracked down someone willing to sell me the only missing GT arch (and not being changed the equivalent of a whole polo) 😂

Experimenting with some grip tape on my pedals for that 'race car' feel. Joking aside its made a massive difference from the polished pedal surface my foot slips on far too often

ATS' are off for a refurb, although I don't know how long the car will be sporting them before I find it a new, wider set
Also debating painting the faces, white? maybe gold?

Begun stripping the interior to prepare for the false floor framework. I also plan to locate the battery here when I finally man up and begin shaving the bay, so I'll look to incorporate a fancy battery holder

It was a really straight forward job, Weber had provided the carb jetted correctly so it was as easy as fitting the appropriate adaptors and play
