From how you say the car drives, I wouldn't become too concerned about the timing.   I have just read another post, which was not too dissimilar to your problem, albeit on a different model.   I would suggest that you take a look at the inside of the distributor cap, rotor arm and the ignition coil (especially where the king lead joins to the coil) - what you are looking for, are what might appear to be pencil lines. If there are any signs of these 'pencil lines' there has been tracking of the high tension current across the insulator. The real cure if any of these problems exist, is to fit a replacement part.   As you have already fitted new HT leads, we can discount checking them.   It is quite possible that, when the engine starts to warm up, any moisture inside the distributor is vaporised and condenses on the insulation, causing tracking.   Don't worry too much about any 'crud' on the cap segments, this is caused by the spark jumping the gap between the tip of the rotor arm and the segments - That's right, it does jump the gap, at no time should the rotor arm actually contact the segments - if id did, it would probably shatter the cap. Obviously, if they are really badly burnt, then it would be as well to replace them.   Suggest that you check out the above points and let us know if there is any improvement.   Regards

Welcome to the Forum.   Whilst attending to the EGR and the hoses might make some improvements, it seems to me that, as the problem only occurs when the engine is COLD, then we should be looking elsewhere.   My first port of call would be in checking for condensation on the spark plugs, or more likely on the coil packs. I would suggest that, before you attempt a start on a dry cold day, check and dry if necessary the above items - You could use a hair drier to make sure that every trace of moisture is removed.   When checking the coil pack, look out for what might look like pencil lines on the insulation. If there are any, they will be caused by high tension 'tracking' which then can become conductive. The only real cure is replacement, but you may obtain some temporary cure by applying some solid wax polish (shoe polish will do) to the affected area.   As for the petrol filter, a partially blocked one would probably manifest itself under full load, rather than at cranking speed.   Have a look at the above items, and let us know if the problem is still there.   Regards.   .

Happy Christmas from me and the rest of the team at Chris Knott Insurance. Thank you for your support in 2020!   Here are the details of our end of year opening hours PLUS a Breakdown Cover offer you might like to benefit from - especially if you're looking for a last-minute Christmas Gift for someone.   https://www.chrisknott.co.uk/christmas   best wishes, Nick *** "Took out a policy with Chris Knott today. My renewal came through last month from my old insurers of nearly £600. Spoke to the very helpful lady here and got my insurance with all extras for £200 less. Over the moon. Definitely worth a try for any looking for insurance." S31thy, Focus ST Owners Club   "Excellent service and advice over telephone. Easy to setup and take out car insurance." Jon Eden, Trustpilot   "Great friendly service. Very efficient - saving me nearly £200. Thank you." Evan Hand, Trustpilot   "Easy to deal with, and cheaper than renewing with my current insurer, so I'm very happy at the moment." Tim Buxton Trustpilot   "Excellent interaction and detailed answers to questions.
