Apple iPhone native iOS notifications - iOS 16.4 or newer - Guide

The longest awaited iPhone feature is here, native iOS notifications, and we couldn't wait to ensure it is enabled for ClubPolo!

ClubPolo is iPhone push notification ready for when Apple released their latest iOS update recently. This means you'll finally get notifications on your phone, even when you do not have your browser open, to alert you of new content on followed items and more. A feature Android owners have enjoyed for a while...

Guide Below

With notifications, you can have an authentic native app experience when members add our community to their phone's homepage. When you add our community to your home screen with the share button. Once it has been added, it looks and feels like a native app downloaded from the App Store.

With Apple finally allowing native notifications and ClubPolo mobile-ready UI, you can have a real app experience without needing a mobile app.

Enabling Notifications

Once this is added, if you wish to get push notifications, you will need to switch them on. Click on the item that has just been created to open your community (ensure you do it from the new application icon). Once in there go to the following location

Menu->Bell Icon->Notification Settings

At the bottom of the page, click to enable browser notifications under the "Push" section

Make sure that you enabled your push notifications PER DEVICE!.

iOS Settings

Be sure to check your Notification Settings, you'll have a new app called 'ClubPolo UK'.

And, that's it.

To enable push notifications on iOS:

Ensure you are using iOS 16.4 or newer
Save the site to your iPhone's home screen via the share icon
Enable push notifications via the option at the bottom of the notifications options page
Ensure you have set some notifications to "+ Push"
Make sure you haven't disabled notifications via iOS Settings globally or for the app icon if you scroll down the settings list in iOS.

We've been working hard over the last few weeks and we're finally ready to show you the newly designed site! Our site is beautifully responsive and mobile friendly. Features including responsive drop down navigation, integrated with the powerful Swiper which is a modern touch slider!

Over the coming weeks we're planing to incorporate all our social accounts so information is easily accessible, although please be aware FaceBook is not a replacement of our Community Forums. This will always remain the best place for questions and answers about your Volkswagen Polo.

Progress so far

There has been progress over the last few months. All rust on the offside has been sorted except for a hole above the door which I will finish in the next couple of weeks. The original engine and gearbox are out allowing access to all of the engine bay. The steering rack has been off to replace the rubber boot and to treat the rust behind it. To get the brake servo conversion in, the pedal box had to come out to remove the original bolts that the master cylinder bolts to. A brake specialist tested the servo and found it to be faulty so that has been repaired and now bolted to a new master cylinder which I think is a Morris item. I have kept the access to the pedal box open because the push rod length into the servo is adjustable and I like the brakes to be instant with the minimum of brake pedal travel. A remote reservoir for the brakes now will bolt to to the suspension tower The original axles have been taken off in preparation for the uprated items that have been made to replace them. After doing a compression test on the new engine all the cylinders are reading 125psi which is about 8.5:1 compression ratio which is a bit higher that I wanted but I think the engine is strong enough to take the boost. If needed I have a decompression plate that I could use to reduce Another job in progress is a temporary ignition enough to getting it running on a stand with a carburetor to make sure it runs before it goes into the car. I have decided to run it ultimately on distributorless wasted spark which means the ECU has to have a cam position sensor. This I am going to do with a 8mm diameter magnet where the distributor drive pin would normally go and the sensor goes into an adapter where the distributor would normally go. Another advantage with a cam sensor is that it will allow fully sequential fuel injection. To allow better access to the front of the engine I am going to make a removable panel in the offside inner wing that will allow access to to the trigger wheel and sensor. It may be necessary to extend this removable panel to allow the slightly extra length of the engine because the trigger wheel that has been adapted to the crankshaft pulley. Also in the inner wing will be an in line air filter. When the pedal box was out, I made sure the clutch cable reinforcement cleared the side of the pedal box so that has been completed with two grubscrews so it clamps to the plastic end of the clutch cable. Some years a go I got a top suspension brace. This, I hope will fit after the engine goes in and will be held by six 10mm bolts. This means there is no room for the expansion tank so I have to find room for another one somewhere else in the engine bay After the stage 2 subframe goes in, I am going to try and mount the ARB so it stands off at about 30mm so it clears the subframe. The bonnet latch panel is beyond repair so it is being replaced which means that the front wings have to come off to get to the points where the panel is welded on. The front wings are the Mk2 ones that don't have the holes for for the indicators so I am going to put them back but in a non stock position as long as the cables reach. At the moment it looks like an oil cooler will fit beside the radiator and if needed a small fan to help with cooling. A while a go I made a stainless steel plenum chamber that bolts to the top of the throttle body. I am not happy with it so I am going to make a new one in aluminium that fits better. It will have a pipe coming off it going to the pop off valve. Another pipe will link up with the intercooler.

What Car? Magazine - Video Shoot - MK3 POLO Needed

What Car? Magazine are planning to do a video celebrating 40 years of the What Car? Car of the Year award - and we hope to include every previous winner.

In 1995 they named the Volkswagen Polo as our Car of the Year, so they're trying to find a model from that year (but any Mk3 would do) to use in their video that they'll be shooting on 1st September in Alconbury.

Can you help or do you happen to know anyone that could help?

Fluid forum view allows you to get right to the meat of our community; the topics.

The video shows the topic list and the forum filter box. As you can see, it is easy to change the topic list by changing the selected forums. This view replaces the traditional list of categories and forums.

You will notice a "grid" option too. You have full control over the display options

The traditional view list is currently default.

History of ClubPolo and our look/logo

If you've been around from the beginning you would've seen the changes over the last 17+ years. But for those who have only been around the last couple of years here is some brief history of the site and the logo which have come and gone.

The Club was formed by the amalgamation of the Polo GT/Coupe S Owners Club and the Polo Coupe Owners Club back in 2000.
The original Club Polo "forum", based on Yahoo e-groups. Technically the Polo-l group came first, but this was the first one to get a sizeable volume of traffic. And surprisingly the full archive is still there!

The story is, this was a group for Polo GT owners originally. Keith Lee (who started the Polo GT OC) signed up and linked it to his website (polo-gt.co.uk), then the Polo GT OC joined the Polo Coupe Owners Club (started my Nick Goodyear) and this e-group became a meeting place for both of them.

Back in the day (2000-2002) it used to be a wicked place to get information. Then Porka.net started up and effectively made it obselete. Forum software was better than the primitive Yahoo e-groups so it didn't take long for everyone to move across. But there's still some interesting archive material on there if anyone fancies a flick through. A few old pictures too. Quite nice to know it's still about!

Porka.net was full of guys with new Polos (mostly mk4s at the time) until the pre-94 owners came across from the e-group. The members started using both sites so they joined to form Club Polo in early 2002. Originally the Club Polo site (a modified version of the Polo GT OC site) linked through to a CP branded Porka.net, then the two sites merged completely.

Check the Wayback Machine website if you're interested - there are some early versions of polo-gt.co.uk archived on that site, but they don't work very well.

Our new logo for 2017 - Present

I'm going to slowly start re-branding all the social media accounts and forums to reflect the new logo, we hope you love the new design. Our plan is to sell all our old stock and start a merchandise store with loads of clothing, accessories, etc.

We felt the previous logo was a little dated to say the least and with a new generation coming to our community we want them to look at our logo and be drawn to it, something that looks cool on t-shirts and hoodies!

I hope you've enjoyed this little history lesson and a trip down memory lane.

The time has come to look at how TapaTalk interacts with our community. Since upgrading to IPS 4 software, our forums are fully responsive and adapt to all devices. With the likes of TapaTalk the app will only see the forums and not the extra features we've added and plan to add in the future. In order to move forward so everyone gets the same friendly user experience while navigating through our site, it has been decided to shut down TapaTalk.

Member Maps

We will close TT at the end of February 2017.

Understandably this will effect a few users (not many), and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please experiment using www.clubpolo.co.uk on your mobile phone, tablet device. There is no more mobile version of the site, it will adjust it's self to your devices screen. So browsing on a phone/tablet would be the same as browsing on a desktop, obviously a slightly condensed version in order to give you the best browsing possible and to free up screen space.

Changes to the for sale sections

We have another great feature for our site. We're changing how the forum handles sales, this is to better protect us and yourselves when selling.

You no longer are required to make a forum post to sell your car, car parts, and misc items. From the 22nd Dec 2016, we have a full classifieds system in place now which will make selling your items a breeze.

For the mean time, we will keep the forum topics open for current sales but you will not be able to create new topics, only replies. This is to ensure a smooth transition over to the classifieds.

Creating adverts is a very simple process - Here are a few example screenshots:

New: Leaderboard

We are excited to announce the Leaderboard as the latest all new feature on our community. The new Leaderboard is designed to better highlight our most active members and content based on reputation and other metrics. The Leaderboard will greatly enhance both member and content discovery on our community.

First you will notice the new feature of member leaders based on a specific time frame. We've set it to show 'All Time', showing those members with the most reputation overall and It also shows the content with the most reputation for the same timeframe so you get a snapshot of both popular members and popular content in one view.

The Past Leaders tab shows the "winners" of each day in a history. The system counts all reputation made each day and logs the members who had the top reputation counts that day. Using reputation rather than post count encourages our members to post quality of quantity which is really important to us.

Those who win the day also get a badge on their profile page to highlight that they were the member with the most reputation for a particular day.

ClubPolo Site Update - v4.1.12

Key Changes

New Features:

When you mouseover the badge showing who liked a post, you will now see a larger list of who liked that post. You can still click to get the full list.
Ratings now show half-stars for the average (for example, if one user votes 3 stars and another 4, it will show 3 and a half stars) and there is now an indication if you have rated something.
A "Preview" button has been added to the post editor which shows how the post will appear after BBCode processing. Tabs show how the post will appear on desktop, tablet and mobile.
Users can now choose to ignore notifications for being mentioned in posts by particular users.
You can now filter searches by specific forums/categories.
You can now control whether open and click tracking should be used for emails sent by SparkPost.

Activity Stream enhancements:

The filter dropdowns now have an "Apply" button for better usability (previously you had to click outside the dropdown).
The "Expanded/Collapsed" toggles are now clearer.
Hitting back from a clicked item in any activity stream now remembers your position and loaded results.

Preview Button

The preview is shown by clicking a new button on the toolbar (meaning it can be moved, removed, etc. just like the other default buttons). When the preview loads, the toolbar allows the user to resize it to different device sizes. If they are on desktop, they can also view it at tablet at phone sizes; on a tablet, it can also be viewed at phone size.

So now we not only show a true preview of what content will look like when posted, but we also allow you to preview how it will look on other devices. Of course that preview is just a best-guess since different devices have different window sizes but it does give you an idea.

Mentions

4.0 introduced mentions, and since then a frequently-requested feature is the ability to ignore notifications triggered by particular members. In 4.1.12, we enhanced the Ignore Users functionality to also allow you to block mention notifications. They will still be able to mention you in posts, but you will no longer be notified about it.

Ratings

As of 4.1.12, ratings will now display half-stars in order to be more accurate. Users will still rate whole stars out of 5 (or 10 if configured so), but the aggregated ratings displayed alongside content will be more fine-grained.

Activity Streams

The first improvement we made is to change how the expanded/condensed toggles are displayed to improve their clarity. From studying the feedback from administrators and users, we discovered that many people did not realize the view could be changed. To improve this, the toggles now explicitly say 'Condensed' and 'Expanded', making it much clearer how the view can be toggled to your own preference.

More clearly marked expand and condense options for Activity Streams

Next, a common point of feedback about Activity Streams is that clicking a result and then hitting the Back button in the browser means you are put back at the first batch of results, losing your place in the stream. In 4.1.12 we improved this so that clicking Back will load the last batch of results you were viewing, enabling you to continue browsing from whence you left off.

Finally, in the Content Types menu we added an Apply button. We discovered that users were not always sure how to save the selection of content types they had made (which automatically happened when that menu was closed). To alleviate this, the new Apply button will save the selection and close the menu, updating the stream results in real-time as expected. You can still simply click out of the menu to apply changes as well.

While overall improvements to search (specifically the algorithms to match and return the results) are a matter of ongoing research and refinement which we will improve in the 4.2 series and beyond, 4.1.12 sees one small improvement to the options available to users. While you have always been able to search within a particular forum, category etc. while browsing that area, you were not able to retroactively filter into particular areas after performing a more general search. IPS Community Suite 4.1.12 adds this ability to the interface, allowing you to get more specific results from a particular area of the community.

The ClubPolo Community Forums have been upgraded! This upgrade includes a number of improvements to how our community looks, feels, and behaves.

We're now mobile friendly: our welcome page and discussion threads now look great on mobile tablet or any handheld device!

Discussion view

Helpful answers: Quickly mark 'helpful' with a new dedicated button. Multiple users can mark the same reply or comment as 'helpful' which brings the community more control to identify one reply as more helpful than another (this action is no longer restricted to moderator/admin access). Find it on replies right next to the Like button.

News Section

News: The News section highlights relevant news & content.

Your streams (are located in your Activity area), the view new content has now changed to steams.

Performance enhancements: pages load faster to give you a better experience using the community.

New Menu Structure

Our new menu structure is designed to highlight the two ways people go about interacting with a community: general browsing of specific discovery.

The Browse tab looks just like the current, default menu does in IPS Community Suite with your list of apps. The new Activity menu is designed for discovery features like our new Activity Streams and the search functions.

Activty Streams

The new Activity Streams are a discovery feature that takes the concept of the old View New Content, Activity, Followed Items, etc. and merges them into a unified system to allow for both admin and member-defined streams of content based on their preferences. The system is very powerful and allows for countless different ways for your members to discover content or for you to more easily expose content you want to highlight.

Front end interface member created streams

Streams that admins create are always visible to all members. Members can simply view those admin streams, create their own, or copy an admin stream as a base. Guests also have access to view all admin streams excluding those that reference unread or followed content as Guests do not have access to those features. Always available to all members is the All activity stream that shows a list of activity in order by date. The admin can define what shows in the All activity stream.

Members can share the link to the streams they create to other members. There is no need for privacy here as all they are sharing are their various filter settings - the actual stream data returned changes based on what member is actually viewing the stream.

Use cases for Activity Streams are endless. Some examples might be:

The current View New Content type of result.
A Stream of all content from members you follow.
Show a list of unread items from a specific list of members (perhaps members of staff).
Maybe you are a prolific Gallery contributor and you want to see a feed of all unread comments on images that you posted.
Rather than following every item you reply to, you can choose to create a feed of all content you have ever participated in.
Get really fine-tuned and create a Stream showing unread comments in Blog only from members you follow.

The Activity Streams feature is very flexibly and you can get really imaginative with its uses. It is a really big addition to IPS Community Suite 4 and we think you will enjoy it. We already do!

Updated Editor

We have updated our WYSIWYG editor in 4.1 to the latest version of CKEditor and we have also switched from iframe to div mode in the editor. That is basically technical speak to say that the new editor will be much, much faster and specifically behave much better on mobile devices.

Many of the custom systems we wrote for 4.0 have been replaced with native editor functionality in 4.1 to allow for both speed and greater reliability. This does mean some things work a bit differently but you will quickly see the very small learning changes are worth the editor being so responsive.

You can now move quote boxes with your mouse to embed them or move them above/below existing text. Another great feature is the new cmd/ctrl right-click menu that allow for contextual options. For example, cmd/ctrl right-click on an embedded image attachment yields:

When pasting in rich text from an external source the editor will now prompt you asking if you want to keep that formatting:

A small, but useful improvements is allowing @member mentions to be selectable by keyboard. Just do @member and use the arrows and tab key on your keyboard to select the member. The editor also now recognizes its area size not only based on your browser window (to distinguish mobile, tablet, or desktop) but also where it is embedded. An example of this is the new status update widget:

A really useful feature is the ability to select and text in any post and get an option to quote just that text.

The new editor is a total rework and we hope you enjoy the new speed, stability, and options. Using the editor is the core function of any community so getting it right is very important.

Updated Search Interface

We have given our search interface a revamp to more effectively use space and be easier to use (especially on mobile):

As well as simplifying the way filters appear, we have separated member searching from content searching. This made sense given that the filters available for finding members are entirely different to those you see when finding content, so this visual separation should make that more apparent to users. This new approach to filters also becomes the new Advanced Search view, with results loading dynamically below when submitted.

Another change we have made is to adjust the text snippet to show you the context of the result hit. For example, if you search ‘lorem', the results will now show you the text surrounding the first match. This small improvement can greatly improve the perceived quality of results:

Finally, another small change has been made to the contextual search box shown in the header on every page. We now default the context to the app you’re currently using, unless you’re on the homepage in which case it’ll search all content. In our testing, we have found this aligns much better with user expectations.

Notifications

We have introduced two new notification features: instant notifications and HTML5 browser notifications. Both work together to provide a great boost to engagement in IPS 4.1.

HTML5 Browser Notifications

We have built in support for browser notifications where they are supported (right now, this includes desktop versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera, but not IE, and mobile browser support is patchy). This allows IPS 4.1 to let you know when important things have happened even if you aren’t active in that window at the time.

We have enabled browser notifications in three areas. When you upload files using any attachment area, you will be notified when your files have finished uploading; when there are new replies to a topic you have currently viewing; and for instant notifications (more about that below).

Instant Notifications

Instant notifications has been a long-requested feature, and we are pleased to say they are included in IPS 4.1. We have worked hard to build an approach that is as light on resources as possible.

If you are active in the window, instant notifications will show as a standard flash message at the bottom of your screen; if you are not active, and your browser supports them, you will get a desktop notification instead, and a chime will sound to alert you. Clicking the notification box will take you to the new item (or open the notification menu if alert is telling you about multiple items).

Ability to limit the number of emails received

In IPS 4.1, you can optionally choose to receive just one email notification per content item until you revisit the community, rather than a separate email for each new reply. This is an option that was previously available in IPB 3.x that we have reintroduced based on feedback.

Retina Emoticons

Our well-loved emoticons have had a facelift (pun intended) and now look great on high-resolution retina screens and dark backgrounds:

The emoticon manager in the ACP intelligently handles retina versions of your own emoticons for you - simply upload emoticons with “@2x” appended to the filename, and IPS 4.1 will know it’s a high-res version of an existing emoticon and seamlessly serve it for you.
