MK1/2/3 owners, would you like a proper roll cage?

Featured Replies

guys I'm having a cage done asap, but as I'm phoning around it occoured to me it might be good if someone else got one at the same time, they might offer a discount if thye had to produce 2 cages for the same car a the same time

i will be having it made in the south (see map), the company has not been decided yet, i thought id make sure someone else was interested first.

the cage wil probably be around the £1100 mark for a full welded in cage including door bars

let me know!

will

fake carbon?

not me sir!

i want weld in and it also needs to have lots of extra bars in...

£1100

out of interest why do you want such an extensive cage and weld in?

Waste of money IMO on a Mk1-3 polo unless you are going to be doing motorsport ..

It would strengthen the chassis/ body though ..

£1100 is alot to ask for a few metal bars fabricated .. tbh ..

That is a huge amount of money for a roll cage. You would be better finding some tubing and fabricating one yourself, then you can be sure that it's a perfect fit.

i want weld in because it looks better, the bolted together ones look naff IMO.

its going to be used for track days, lots of them, with a kinda berg cup esque feel to the car

the car is also having a real carbon roof, annother reason for a cage

I'm not confident enough with my welding for me to be happy welding in the cage, i am going to add bars in the future, however i would prefer the main cage and mounts to be done by someone who knows what they are doing and has experience.

Fair enough reason for not doing it yourself, but it's still a hell of a of readies for a cage.

i think alot of the opinions of this thread would be best left to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

£1100 for a custom cage is actually very reasonable depending on the spec. price of steel has gone up again recently as a reflective cost of petrol prices. the amount of hours to actually form the CDS tube in a rollcage, even in minimum spec is mad, and you should really be a coded welder to fit a cage.

it would be insane to anticipate you could physically buy straight lengths of CDS and form them at home and it actually fit anywhere near nicely. the majority of custom cage manufacturers are using CNC tube forming which means they fit perfectly. i was saw a few cages that came from protection and performance in skipton and they are awesome quality, almost millimeter perfect.

you could make your own cage but i'd look at examples of people who had done it and ask yourself if you want that in your car!

the only thing i would say is maybe drop the specification a bit to something like a 14 point cage with nice door bars rather than going crazy, you'll get to a point, especially when just doing track days, where the element of protection isnt worth the weight penalty.

this is what i want

(shamefully stealing your design pinches! :) )

i just spoke to saxon motorsport in kent who quoted 875 +vat

Slightly off topic but what spec is the engine in this beast of a mk2 you are building ??

Carbon roof , thousand pound cage , carbon steering wheel ..

Its going to of cost you a packet once its done !

I hope its somthing along the lines of a G Turbo or a 16v Turb

Maybee a 1.6AEE Turbo ??

Match the money spent on the weight reduction with a good engine & a LSD .

at the mo;ment a bike carbed gt

however over the winter i shall be building an AFH on ITBs to hopefully a silly spec :)

thats not exactly mad spec.

Can you not pay in cash and not pay the VAT??

I'm wondering that, i'll ask :)

pinches - I'm doing a welding course over the summer, when I'm done and I'm happy with my welding ill link it up the front struts and add door bars in.

already got a front strut brace

i was interested in a cage but can't really justify spending that amount of money on something which is there for show.

I would get a company to build you a 4 or 6 point cage so you get perfect fit then just buy some cds tubing build on top of that!

yeh really not that simple tho is it. there are right and wrong ways to put tubes in cages so they dont collapse! and you need to put trumpf joints in all the tubes, and welding round tube to start with is an absolute ball ache!

the reason i recommended the weichers cage is the fact you can get it asap, its cheap, and if your going to be driving your car VERY hard on tracks to the point where you want such a super spec cage, theres the possibility of a crash which may render the cage useless for further use (as well as the car)

dont want to sound pessimistic but the 600 or more youd save you could spend on the rest of the car :)

sorry to intrude on the thread when your really asking for potential group buyers :)

i want weld in because it looks better, the bolted together ones look naff IMO.

So your basing all this primarily on aesthetics? Not exactly motorsport focused...

just in case we didn't know where the south was?:lol:

thats not exactly mad spec.

Yes it is, but only if you're in the MK area.

grunge, I'm aware of this, however as far as its possible to say i dont intend getting in a cage bending crash, the car will be fibreglass pannels, so i will be able to reconstruct these in the event of a minor crash....

how so?

i want a weld in cage, not bolt in.

wether the cage is weld or bolt in they are both as effective surley.

or does me wanting it to look good mean it cant work?

show and go?

can i safely say noone is interested at this point and ill got aheah and book my car in on its own?

Taking your car in this direction should mean that functionality comes first, not looks.

I would've thought weld-in would be better for the application, but I don't know the facts.
