Just bought this...

Featured Replies

Just bought a Mk3 Gt For cheap (£180) cos the girl couldn't figure out what was wrong with it... It jumpy and lumpy as hell, it's just died on me on the way home from getting it back (litteraly round the corner from where I need to get it to!) and now it wont start back up!!

In the last month she has had new distributor, distributor cap, coil pack, leads and plugs. It's also had the cambelt changed and oil change and that hasn't helped the problem. Any ideas anyone???

It turns over but it's not firing and also the oil pressure light flashes

Wanna get this thing running properly then it's gonna be my daily. Was just gonna break it but....

hmm probably not, it if it had fully failed I'm sure the engine would have seized up...

is the timing out?

can you turn the engine by hand?

when you try and crank it with the key do you get any sounds? does it crank? does it sound particularly smooth?

is it the correct dizzy?

Mate I haven't got a clue, wouldn't know how to crank it by hand (mechanical mongrel here)

Also wouldn't know how to tell if the timing is out. When i turn the key it just sounds like a car normaly does but it doesn't start at all, no firing

How do I find out the first two?

Yeah just put 2.5 litres in it before we bought it back and still no joy! tried push starting it while we pushing it back and also nothing, no life, no bang, no buck

Listen carefully and turn the ignition key until the dash lights come up, at which point you should hear the fuel pumps prime (it helps if you have the drivers door wide open as the pumps are underneath at the back of the car).

If you hear them prime then you more than likely don't have a fuel issue.

The majority of starting problems are ignition related. You need to find out if you have a spark at the coil. Pull the HT lead off the coil and get someone to turn the engine over whilst watching the coil turret. This is best done in the dark as you'll be able to see the spark easier. It should be a strong spark and you should be able to hear it "clicking" as it sparks.

Let us know how you get on.

Try it now, its not worth watching the football cause we're crap as usual.

Ok done that now.... can hear the fuel pump prime alright but you were right... NO SPARK! :? Well not one that's noticeable anyway, thought I saw the tiniest of sparks at the end of the lead (barely noticeable even in the dark) but not one from the coil.

Is that the coil pack that needs changing then? Apparently she had that changed in the last month or so but that didnt help the fact that it was juddering like an epileptic kangaroo. Can they pack up that easily?

BUMP

Anyone??? Come on, i#, gonna be fucking around with it today

it could well be the coil. did the previous owner replace it with a brand new one or another second hand one?

Brand new one mate, the box is still in the boot. Gonna get some pics up in a bit. Got a couple of spare coils somewhere so gonna try changing it then see what happens...

Do these have a amplifier for the coil? Could be that if so?

  • Author

Right have tried to different coils to no avail, anything else it could be?

Check the engine earth straps are all OK. There should be one (flat strap covered in black plastic coating if I remember correctly) from one of the bolts holding the coil pack that goes down to the gearbox side engine mount. There should be another larger one somewhere at the other side of the engine. A bad contact on one of these can cause the ignition to stop working.

Yeah checked the today, they all seem alright. It was running really badly before it died yesterday, could that point me in any direction?
