1.4 abd + gt gearbox

there is no substitute for CC, i went for the ABD, common as shit compared to the 3F engine.

no real downsides to the ABD apart from the lower compression ratio, i've sorted that, 100bhp here i come!

how did you sort the compression?

yeh how did you sort the compression.also where to i find a abd?? is it just a 1.4 mk3 golf block?

The compression ratio's not a problem as long as you feed the engine with plenty to compress. The 1.6 8v Lotus twin cam had no problems getting 130bhp from the same compression ratio, because it had the feed to get more air in,and subsequently have more to squash - resulting in a higher actual compression than on anything less than its twin 40s.

I ran a standard 1.4 ABD from a '97 Golf on bike carbs,it was swift, and it pulled 6k in fourth very willingly.

Its got plenty. But then,I've no personal experience with a GT.

any mk3 golf/vento with a 1.4, or mk2 ibiza's upto 95 i believe. sadly there isnt a magic ABD tree, but they are pretty abundant in scrapyards and VW breakers. its only really the polo fraternity that is going to be looking for these engines, no one with a golf is going to waste their time with a 1400 when the possible engine conversion list is so large compared to a polo, so dont pay any more than £150, from the outside its pretty much identical to a 1.3 so everything can be swapped over.

the only way to do it with these flat heads is to deck the block and pistons, you could fit a thinner metal headgasket than the standard composite one but you'll have to pocket the pistons anyway. swings and roundabouts really. if you dont have access to an machine shop you'll pay through the nose for having this work done. i'd go as far as to say easily more than an AFH conversion. my compression is now around 10.7:1, lots of other work has been done, will update the bit in the gallery next week when i'm home from uni.

ok thanks for that.il take a trip to my scrappy and se whats there.

well my plan is

mk3 golf 1.4 bottom end

mk3 polo gt head

gk inlet manifold

webber dmtr carb

and a 4 branch

polo gt gearbox

in a mk2 polo breadvan

can you see any ovious faults??

max

Nope, sounds good

The ABD head is identical, the cam is different thats all, and some GTs have double valve springs. you will also need an electronic fuel pump.

your setup is pretty similar to mine except, i've had the bottom end balanced, flywheel lightened, CR sorted, alot of headwork, 3 angle valve seats in the head, kent cams camshaft. i'm aiming for 100bhp, you should be well on the way to 90.

so i might aswell just get the head and block.if the gt had 2 valve springs then I'm guessing the valves will open and close faster.....

i would be running a better cam anyway in time.

as for a fuel pump what could i use one from.would the one on the golf be o.k on a dmtr carb??

and is there any difference between the mk3 golf box and a gt one?

You should be looking at "well" over !00bhp if you use somthing that can supply the flow it will need! good base for further modding

is that at the flywheel or wheels?

Sorry, that was aimed at PoloPete... but flywheel

ok well if I'm running 100bhp in a completely striped bready il be happy lol. should be quite nippy to i guess as its so light weight

dmtr/dmtl need very low pressure either get a low pressuce facet, or a decent regulator. the pump from anything with fuel injection will need regulating. you could use the head off of a 2G engine and keep the mechanical fuel pump but this limits your camshaft choice in the future. Newman are the only people i know produce a cam with the fuel pump lobe, or they used to anyway. the more ABD conversions the better i say.

took a trip to the scrappy today...

1.4 golf engine head and block......30quid soon to be mine:)

are you going to rebuild it? 30quid is a cheap, well done.

yeh il stick it on my mk2 golf for now.should i get the 5 speed box to?????

my stupid 1.3 keeps eating h/gaskets or some how mixing water with oil and coolant into the bores.dont the headgasket twice in 3 weeks...........

erm yes il swap heads over so i dont have to worry about fuel pumps and regulators yet.i have no experience with them so il do bit more research.

i thaught it was a bargain.only prob is I'm not sure of the mileage but the golf didnt look to bad condition.,maybe get some power to the clocks and find out.

bump!!!

can much be gained from a 1.3 golf engine with a port and polished head with gt cam, inlet manifold, custom 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and system,

lightened flywheel

standard 1.3 bottom end

what can be gained realistically with a 1.4 bottom end?

also would a 1.4 gearbox be a better option?

what is ABD ?

what is ABD ?

The engine code for the 1398cc vag small block engine.

1394 is it not?

1391cc Golf 1.4 block, not to be confused with the 1390cc Polo 1.4 block which has many differences.

Yeah it's 1391 although some sorces report it as 1398cc (which is the engine size of the mk3 diesel)
