gearbox ratios...

Featured Replies

so in my search for a perfect gearbox to suit my needs i found the ratios this morning and did some comparing...

so if the info i have written below is right i will be correct in saying that my current gearbox (top left) is fookin long and would explain why i always thought there was too much of a drop from 2nd to 3rd and 4th and 5th are ridiculously long because the ratio is under 1.0

the original box i had (top right) was too short overall which is why i changed in the first place, so a good medium between the 2 wood be the gt box? as the g40 box has a very long final drive?

correct me if i am wrong but please do it in lamens terms as it took me a while to get my head around it!

I find a gt box a bit of a bastard when you want to cruise tbh, i think neildubgt made a gt box with an 8p 5th in it for his old gt - apparently that was pretty good

Yeh that would be spot on as the 5th in my current box is great on the motorway!

There are plenty of gearboxes out there that have better ratios than the 8P/CEG but you have to look at mk4 boxes.

The mk4 16v (CWX is one of the codes I cant think of the others right now) and the mk4 1.3 gearbox (CWU) are like the AFA and AHD gearbox respectively but they have longer final drives; 3.875:1

There are a couple of 1.6 8v gearboxes that have similar 5th to the 8P but the other gears are better spaced. That's what I've got for mine. (code CWV) The gears are the same as the AHD but final drive is 3.588:1

I should have mentioned in my first post, the main reason for wanting a gt or g40 box is so i can fit an LSD if i decide to :)

You can fit an LSD to most of the later boxes. It's just mk2 and most mk3 boxes that you can't

Ah i didnt realise that! As far as i knew it was gt/g40 only!

Well now its a whole different ball game...

Yeah all the G40 boxes have it but it's only the CEH from the late GT that has the bolt on Crown wheel. The CEGs made after 10/93 have them as well according to etka. All mk4 boxes of interest should have them.

The most effective box i used was a 1.3 8v 6n box, same ratios as a 16v box apart from 5th, but i planned on swapping fifth for economy, wasnt bad, 4k @ 80mph but thats on standard wheel size, you have lower profile tyres etc.

smashed that box now, so need another :(

Dont want to sound daft but when it comes to purchasing an LSD for a mk4 box it would just be the same one they list for the g40 box because its still an 085 anyway?
