Squirtle The Minty Polo

Featured Replies

Small story about how I came about this:

Basically my mate chris (whos been more of an old mini enthusiast) text me and said he'd got a polo, and all he said was its a 1.3 and a J reg so i was extremely interested in going halves for it for a little project in our spare time. Wont be updates frequently as I have my own car that isnt finished yet either but its all fun ;)

I went over today just to have a look, took a few pictures and gave it a quick wash:

The name 'Junk' obviously just comes from the number plate... But its never seen a 'Minty Polo' before? But basically the bodywork on this is pretty bad, 150k on the clock, no tax or MOT, but its a solid shell and it only has a little surface rust (until we take the arches off) and it hadnt been started for a month or so but the first time I started it it sat on tick over and ran sweetly thats why I refused to let it be scrapped! And the dents on the rear quarter and door are when the previous owner's son attacked it with a baseball bat, what a bellend...

Problems:

-Needs a new fuel tank & pump (I think)

-New suspension as you can kind of tell the drivers side front has colapsed lol...

-Wiper motor

-New tyre (or new wheels...)

-New battery

-Remove splitter

-Keep the rear lights as it looks like its winking and with the collasped suspension on the front its winking with a gansta lean lol

And will more than likely uncover more as we get along, I've already got a good idea of how its gunna look after its fully roadworthy. I was also quite surprised with the spec of trim tbh, gt arches & bumpers etc.. And if anyone can enlighten me on minty polo's it'd be much appreciated!

So what do we think?

Bargain that mate, nice spec too, also looks very much like an nz engine too me. Mpi engine similair to the gt , think it was qouted as being 55 hp but they always feel like more , unlucky if you need a an inline fuel pump though, they are the same as the gt and g40 ones, tricky to find , cheers Mark

deffo an nz motor! turning into a really good find. body looks solid, wont take much work to get it good. if your getting rid of the steels let me know, as i would be interested in them

I just knew it would be an NZ, good find!

Calypso green 8-) Such an under rated colour. I loved my old one. Seems that calypso green cars like to rust a bit though :-( Doesn't look like the rust is too bad yet. Just wonder how much arch is actually left under those arch trims :-p

My old one in GT form.

Cool start :-)

Cheers man, I really like that! Definately gunna go with clear indicators & Side repeaters I think, the trims will be off this weekend and ill get some pics aswell, not looking forward to it I dont think!

Also Jon I may give you a ring when doing it at I've never taken the trims off before :/

Yeah clear stuff suits some colours better than others and it definately suited this colour.

I'd be scared removing the trims on a mk2, mk3 polo :-s

Thats down 80mm front and 50mm ish at the rear (rear always sits lower) and i think it sat the best out of all the mk2, mk3 polos i have owned. So if you end up buying suspension kit. Go for an 80mm kit :-)

Ironically thats whats broken lol... Gunna get an 80mm kit on the front initially so it passes an MOT then ill get adjustables for the rear :)

I had a mk3 as my first car, and I've definately missed them!

Well most of the kits you buy come with a fixed front, eg 80mm and then the rear height is adjustable via a little securing ring clip that is moved up and down the shock to set the height.

Coilies can be easily had for the rear mk1 golf fit etc. But its easy to get the rear low enough without coils.

I've had a look on ebay and cant find anything, ideally second hand for the time being, still looking at new kits though :S

My gt is demolovers old one. Alot more rust has come through since those pictures. Having a full respray in the original colour before summer though to get rid of it!

i wouldn't go any lower than 80/60 personally, my cars rolling on 13s now and the arch gap is spot on, pretty uniform the full way around the arch!

Laave the arch trims on!

love the odd rear lights!

Definitely man, It looks like it's got a black eye :D

my mate has an NZ (JW91) what gearbox has it got? his has a 4 speed and all the other NZ's i've seen are 5 speeds

also has this got a factory moving sunroof?

  • Author

It's a five speed buddy, and it does have a sunroof but I haven't tried moving it yet so no promises there...

Pretty sure all NZ's have 5 speed from new?

Pretty sure all NZ's have 5 speed from new?

from what i gather they all should be yes, they are 3rd most powerful engine after the g40 and gt but yet his has a 4 speed in it :? do you think someone down the line has killed the five speed box and wacked a 4 speed from the scrappy in? it is definitely an nz too the sticker in the boot says so, also they didn't come with rev counters either :? what were vw thinking

No they're not....

The AAV makes 55bhp aswell. The NZ is pretty much the same engine as the AAV apart from it uses an MPI fuel system. Lots of other differance's though.

vw may have said it only had 55bhp, but not everything vw say is always true.

steve if you are still after suspension, i might be able to sort you out some on the cheap as I'm upgrading to spax adj shocks and std g40 springs.
