Yo people's, got pretty bored today so set myself a mission to fit a 6n2 cup holder/coin tray into my 6n (some of you will know the 6n "cup holders" in the glovebox are the most pointless things ever!!!

Anyhooo a lot of cutting and bodging and I finally managed to get it in, opens fine and holds cans etc.

Just want some opinions on position if its looks good? It's not 100% secured yet as I need so self tappers from work but the pictures will show you the general idea, also had anyone else done this before as I haven't actually seen any ??

All comments opinions welcome

Yeah it was going to but it wouldn't have had the support it has being where it is and would put a lot more strain on it!

Cheers Harris makes so much difference and I never used the fag lighter for anything so thought I'd give it a go

Seen 2003 on a german show, must be boring while changing to 1st, 3rd or 5th gear.

Size wise, would it be difficult to just get one individual cup holder to fit in place of the coin tray? Has anybody tried this?

Two weeks of driving has taught me that I don't need a coin tray, but I definitely need a cup holder!

Was it particularly annoying while changing to 1st, 3rd or 5th?

Ah, so it is :) So it is doable, it just depends on how desperate I am for a cup holder.

I bought the Arosa MK1 centre console with the cup holders and it does a fine job but even that gets in the way of changing gears a bit when it's being used. Sad fact is, there's not really a good place for a cup holder in the 6N. I mounted one on the dash before but it looked out of place so that went. Less of a problem is that the original centre console probably helped support the entire dash and that's gone now, I can't say I've noticed any difference or problems with that but I do wonder about it sometimes! I notice yours is also gone, can I ask why you did that or was it just to fit this 6N2 cup holder?

Couldn't you somehow fit that into the cubby under the passengers glovebox or air bag ? That too is pretty pointless as you can't really put anything into it.

That area is far from the gear stick, not really in the way of the passenger and means you still have an ashtray and lighter.

Also, another option is to somehow graft a recessed type holder off another car into the centre console, or even fit a longer console with the holders in. Or even an arm rest with them in?

Just a case of going to a breakers yard and eyeballing them- generally a hacksaw is needed to make them fit, but it's do able.

I tried getting one out of a car at a scrappy but I just broke it. Now no one can have it! :)

I've got this in my polo 6n2 in the standard place and SO MANY TIMES I've shifted gears, bought my hand back to the wheel and punched the bottom of my bloody drink and shot it into the air! The words I say at that time are never to be repeated let's say. At least with your mod you can't punch the bottom of it like a catapult.
