hiya, just wonderng how easy it is and what it involves to modify a mk3 golf elbow thing, over the carb on a mk3 square (its a weber carb if that makes a difference)

i already have the "arm" and a cone filter, I'm just after some guidence. thankyou :)

Have you got a mk3 or mk2? (says you have a mk2 in the title, but in your post you say mk3) also you say square bit in your avatar is a pic of a coupe. Slightly confused. I'll try and give you an answer for both, although having looked again you say the mk3 is a GT so I'm guessing it's the mk2 you want to fit it to.

If you have a mk3, it doesn't have a carb it has a fuel injector (looks like a carb) Fitting the elbow is very simple. You have to remove the three threads that would normally hold the standard airbox onto the injector, then fit the screws that come off the mk3 golf. There are two sets of screws on the mk3 golf. The first set replace the threads just described, and the second set screw into the first set to hold the elbow on the injector. If you don't have these screws you'll need to go find some on a car in a scrapyard, or get them from VW

As for fitting one on a mk2, the 1.05 has a totally different airbox design (it's alot smaller around the carb) so the elbow won't fit. If it's a weber DMTR on a 1.3 with the standard airbox adaptor, I think it's a slightly different size again, at the very least one of the bolts doesn't line up. You can actually get an elbow from a mk2 polo that'll fit the standard 1.3 airbox pattern, but it's from a engine that was never sold in the uk. The other option is if it's a DMTR (or DMTL) then you can get a direct bolt on elbow. The Lancia beta had these carbs fitted as standard and they have an elbow on them like the type fitted to the mk3 golf.

Having said all of that, you don't really need to do away with the dustbin lid setup. If you remove the funnel at the end of the intake on the airbox, you can fit some 70mm hose over it and run it to the front of the car (maybe with a scoop at the front to gather more air) this would work better than an induction kit, plus you'd still have the warm air feed that carburettor engines need in this sort of weather.
