GT Idling issues Warm/Cold

Featured Replies

When I set off for work in the mornings I get about a mile down the road to a set of traffic lights, dip the clutch and the car cuts out. When cold it idles steadily around 1000RPM.

The revs seem to drop to about 4-500rpm whilst on main beam and stationary, I fitted a new battery on saturday Green Flag man said the alternator was charging fine.

Could this be due to the Golf GTi AFM on the car? I have a invoice for it being set up at VW main dealers. It also has a dark blue temp sensor, looks to be a pattern part so i will be changing that too.

Also, when the engine is warm, whilst stationary the revs will drop suddenly and pick up again.

The thermostat is stuck open too, this will be getting changed ASAP when I next pop back to my parents- my last two mk3's had stuck thermostats and I didn't have any idling issues so I guess this is unrelated.

A good service is in order I think...

I'm interested to find out whats going on here, as I have similar issues, albeit without the stalling. The revs drop down a lot when I am loading the alternator, and the battery and alternator are in reasonable health. My problems started when I swapped the throttlebody, however, I did retain the throttle position sensor from my previous throttlebody.

I'm inclined to try another lambda but don't want to fork out a lot by firefighting. I'd rather pinpoint the issue then sort it! hmmm

i have the same issues and I'm running the gt lump on r6 carbs. ill let her warm up in the morning, go up the road to the junction dip the clutch and she will stall. after a bit she will be ok as though carbs are icing or something. not sure whether its a similar problem with your throttle bodies??

It might be blue temp sender related?

Has the car got the correct alternator fitted? My GT has this problem sometimes, but i know it's got an alternator off a 1 litre on it. Not sure if it makes too much of a difference but a GT alternator is 65kw if i recall, the 1 litre ones 50kw.

Doesnt sound lambda related, unless the car is drinking fuel?

Joe

any ideas what it could be with mine as I've got no idle control etc due to bike carbs.

@ Martin and Karl, I've had similiar problems with my Gt this year and its always been the coil , I'm halfway through the coil conversion to see if that will help, and i have always found with the digfants , they are very sensitve to poor earthing , Regards Mark

Had a play around with the Polo yesterday afternoon. Leads looked brand new and VW/Beru items but took each one off one by one and tested with a known working set of leads. Still no luck, then i took off the dizzy cap and it looked bloody awful, contacts were all corroded so i replaced that and the rotor arm with used but very clean items and did the same for the blue temp sender. I adjusted the idle slightly and it now idles perfectly and no longer cuts out when cold. Even with the main beam and hella grille on the revs hardly drop!
