I quite like the old mk1 and my mates considering one.

The 1.6 was lighter with de cat but the 1.8 had slighlty more power and weight, what would be the better engine? Anyone driven one?

My dad has a 1.8 which has an eaton m45 bolted onto it..... Wickedly fast car!

GAZ coilovers, semi slick tyres, roll cage, 4point harnesses the lot - one hell of a track toy!

Well they're good cars and that one above is so nice. But for blokes driving them....i find it a turn off rather than a turn on :-)

The newer ones are a bit more chunky and manly.

some people conside them gay but i drove the 1.6 and it was nice to drive and ther not that slow also go sideways well =]

As I said above,

they are good cars and I bet they drive and perform brilliantly, but they portray a girly image, just like most if not all other small convertibles, (MR2, SLK, Peugeot CC, Micra CC etc).

What have they got going for them?

Nippy, and have a well balanced rear wheel drive chassis. Cost £1k upwards.

Think I'd rather have another 318is!

The 1.6 is very slow. Handles well, but very slow.

I couldn't drive one, I can appreciate they corner well but that's where the appeal ends.

They might just about crack 120 if you get a long enough bit of road, but I managed to safely overtake one on quite a short stretch of road in my old VTR, and they were going for it. Then again I had more power and less weight so it was a given really

Yeah but to be fair, most people's cars on here look like utter shite but their owners all portray the whole 'its your car etc' attitude. Clearly this applies with the MX5 too, if you like driving it (which I'm dam sure you will) then fuck what anyone else thinks, I bet if they got to drive one they wouldn't be so dam picky.

Most of the people who will say it doesn't look cool probably know fuck all about cars, and the ones that do know about cars will at least appreciate the reason you bought one. I would be alot more put off by the lack of rear seats than anything else.. but still - COOL.

I've gone up against one and it couldn't even pull away from my valver (and yes he was trying).. The difference is, he's supposed to be in a sports car!

Went out in a 1.6 facelift one, was expecting alot more from it, quite disappointed with the straight line performance. You'd have to get the 1.8 really.

Anyone got any pictures of MK5s that actually look good? Think a few of us may need convincing

Why would you even care? A bloke I used to work with called Daz used to go on at me saying he'd never wear a pink shirt or top in case he looked gay

Makes no sense to me, most gay people I've met have way more style than most straight lads..

And I'd rather drive an MX5 and look 'gay' then drive something normal and manly because I'm afraid of looking gay..

How they drive isn't even the main reason why I want one, the main reason is they look as cool as almost any other JDM car when slammed on some crazy wheel fitment.
