Thought I'd share this with people. I've seen a few people doing this so it's not a terribly original mod but it does make my car stand out a little more from all those other red polos that I see daily. This took a couple of days to do, it's something you have to take your time over:

First I took the badge off (it probably depends which model yours is but mine had three plastic clips that just needed pushing to release - you'll work it out!).

I then split the two parts of the badge. The back had 7 little clips (in the picture you can see the slots they clip into) that I couldn't work out how to get off so I just cut the lips off some of them and snapped the rest off using a screwdriver (the plastic is quite soft and this is easy to do). The two parts then came apart:

Then I sanded them down with a medium grain sandpaper (80-120). The chrome/silver part of the badge needs a good going over because primer doesn't stick to it otherwise!

Then, following the instructions on my spray can of primer I primed the badges. I also lightly sanded each layer of primer once it had dried using fine grit sandpaper (150-180). In this photo you can see where I didn't sand down the chrome VW bit properly at the right hand point of the W:

Then I built up layers (by spraying a thin mist from a distance) of my colours on each piece, again using fine grit sandpaper in between each layer. To do this properly, I followed the instructions on the paint can for drying times etc - don't rush this or else it will look rubbish! Also, don't use cheap spray paints, the black I used was cheap and was a nightmare to use compared to the Halfords Flash Red I also used.

Here it is once I'd finished painting it:

Some of you may want to leave it with the matt finish but I wanted to make mine shiny so I used lacquer - again, I sanded down the black surface with a really high grit sandpaper (didn't want to remove too much colour or make any noticeable scratches) and again I followed the instructions on the tin of lacquer. To finish with I put the two parts back together and put superglue into each of the slots on the back to hold it all together and here is the finished product:

If you've done this and had a better way of doing any part of it please feel free to comment - I don't claim to be an expert!

Breaking the clips is one way - but if you get a knife (i used my army tin opener thingy) you can force it down the back where the two halves are.

Pushing in deep and working round, the badge will separate. It takes a bit of force, but they do come apart! And it means that you don't lose the clips.
