So I'm thinking about spray painting my bumpers on my mk2f black because I use so much back to black bumper trim to keep them black and it doesn't last long but I just wondered if anyone has ever done this before as well? If so I was wondering what colour black to paint them like satin or gloss and if I use lacquer?

degrease them with panel wipe , light scuff up with grey scotch pad

light coat of transparant plastic primer then a couple of coats of bumper paint , clear coat not usualy required

What about a heatgun?

Melts the surface plastic just enough to make it look new.

Tried using a heat gun when I first got it but they didn't stay black for very long the side trims seemed to stay black it's just the bumpers which faded quickly

Depends really mate, leave it on really thin and it's fine...my front has lasted months without flaking although the rear is all flaked now where I put it on a bit thicker

at the end of the day rattle can paint will only be so good ...its cheap crap really

try some boiled linseed oil , that seems to restore em and last ages

Linseed oil you say? Might give that whirl on mine actually. Been meaning to doit considering they're far from black nowadays...

Yea I've done my grill and will be doing the bump strips in a couple weeks to get them looking blaaaaaaaack.

I have done a lot of bodywork and I find that a good scuff with 240 sandpaper, a good degreasing and an average coat of primer is good enough and nothing ever is peeling off. Though I think that body colour bumpers looks so much better than black. That's what I did on my mk2f

I also glued closed the toenail caps both front and back

This is how bad they are, I'm currently doing the rear bump strip as we speak. This is even with heat hun, and autoglym bumper gel, so you know the heat gun method is a lot of shit...

Yes, I did fill that trim - like gap in the bumpers with some fibreglass and epoxy resin and some filler on the top, but even with all that nothing was cracking or peeling off.

And that is not factory colour, I did the full respray myself. And used some very good rust proofing solution if anyone's interested.

Just make sure the area is clean and that's it, then get spraying. Very light coat for the 1st, you should still see the bumper. Let it dry for 15/20 mins, then the 2nd coat. Then with the 3/4 add a lot more, you can do 4/5 coats and let it dry for an hour and that should be it.

Long time ago you could by the red bead trim of ebay, or find some red piping.
