If anyone has any picture that will help me/others to understand this thread that would be ideal.

Great post MikeyMK

I'll try to remember to take one tonight, I've got about three gearboxes in pieces in my garage at the moment.

Very informative mikey, good work. Is this the only (or main) failure mode for these gearboxes? If so then eliminating this weakness is really good news.

I did have to search a bit to find this post again, can we get it pinned?

I take it this applies to the ATV box too?

Mine were from Golf3,MK2 and MK2F. I then lost first in a 4speed from a 1.0 MK2F,but had no other problems with the fives.

It'll help with selection of 5th, but it won't help you if the teeth are worn, if the oil level's low, if the oil's getting too hot or if you're making shitloads of torque.

if the teeth are worn too much can you get a new 5th gear cog if so does anyone have a part number also the engagement ring????

I dont know which one the ATV is Jez,i thought that was a television channel in the 70s.. But all small-type 5-speeds should be the same. The gear is held in place by a sprung ball in a notched selector rod,and the adjustment loads the spring slightly, holding it in gear properly.

Yeah Kev,you can do all the work on 5th all in situ, having to remove nothing more than the wheel,as you've discovered.

mikey could you tell me my daughters 1600 polo 1998 has a slight crunching only on 5th gear we are having to really drop down to 38to 40 mph to go into 5th so we do not damage it until we getto the bottom of whats causing it ,which to me would indicate a weak synchro ?seeings that you have good knowledge on the polo gearboxes i see that you mentioned about adjusting the amount the hub goes over the teeth with that 13mm nut and allen screw ,if i try adjust ing the amount it covers the teeth do you think this would stop the syncro crunching on 5th be really greatfull for some advise

My 1.3 spi (AAV) has a little allergy to 5th.. sometimes goes in, sometimes hates itself..

I take it this guide will be the same box?

Yep. Not absolutely sure what's wrong, could be just exterior remote lever adjustment. But it could well be that the fork and/or rose joint shown above have wear and the joint could do with half a clockwise turn of adjustment with said 6mm allen key (remember it wont budge without loosening the 13mm nut behind it).

Thanks a lot. Much appreciated

iv just done this if i had of none it was as easy as what it was then i would of done it ages ago :puke:

always wondered why there isnt a magnetic sump plug to hold the metal bits when this happens just to save damage to the rest of the box. we use them on the engine oil side to catch bits so why not the gearbox?

Perfect location would be were that void is, especially if thats were most of it ends up anyway.

uv got me thinkin now i might drill an hole and tap it and put a magnetice bolt in it as their is plenty of room in that void ;)

Just wondering, if a GTI gearbox is selecting 5th, then pops the gear back out straight away (when car running), does that mean its more likely to be the selector if there is no crunching etc?!

I've read through quite a few topics on the forum (much to the point where I've now got confused and a headache lol) and i know these gears are quite soft at the best of times... My knowledge of technical side of things is also limited, esp to Polos lol, but i remember also having a similar problem on a mk3 Golf i had, the gear selector in the engine bay had just got slightly misaligned and just needed loosened a touch and moved to be perfect... Does the Polo have something similar or is it all down by/in the gearbox???

If the pedal box goes, you cant do f all with gears isnt that right??? Thanks all :)

If this is whilst travelling,i'm afraid that's the point where it starts shearing teeth from the engagement ring.. Look at the pic of the two rings photographed on the front bumper above - that's the result of it kicking/jumping out of 5th gear several times (once plus a few more whilst trying to hold it in to get me home). The only fix is replacement.

But the reason it happened in the first place? Yeah, because it wasn't adjusted to within the correct position tolerance.

If its without any engine load (so it'd be doing it with the engine off) then that's more likely the remote.

Top man Mikey, thanks for clearing that up! :) That amount of wear is only after a handful of times?!?! :o Bloody hell...

Just to clarify also, is there a selector bit in the engine bay, or is it all underneath at the gearbox in the polos?

Unlikely to be in the box (though i bent the linkage for 1st gear in a 4-speed), adjustment is only outside the box other than the adjustable rose joint this topic's about.

I dont know what car you drive though,i take it its a 6n2 GTi which is cable operated. So adjustment is different than my rod type remote.
