Moving car photoshoot

Featured Replies

i made a tripod car rig so i can take moving pictures of cars ( like what you get on the front cover of max power and other high quality publications....)

basically its a tripod secured to 2 industrial glass suction lifers.

it may look a little primative, but it holds my weigh so its strong enough. it can be attached to most parts of the car, especially boxier cars like mk2 golfs, jettas polos etc, but rounder stufff like beetles and new leons might be a littel harder for the suction cups to grip.

i wondered if any one wanted some pics taking of their cars like this, for free. i spent 1/2 an hour in meadowhall car park last night and got a few decent shots.

message me on here if you want some piccys taking, i live in sheffield so i dont want to drive too far!

Good idea, I've always wanted one of these.

T700BES - You can either put it on a timer, or a cable button

i hav an infrared remote shutter release which i press from inside the car once in motion, or setting the timer on the camera would work too

that's awesome mate, i think i might nick your idea, just got to find some industrial glass suckers!

They look pretty cool. I'd love to make a rig like that, I'd just be scared of hanging my camera out of the car in case it falls off. There quite expensive to buy if you want a proper one.

mate there some sweet ass pics, good idea

Excellent home brew creation and the photos have come out good...but....

Cool idea, love the end result. Have you tried putting it on the bonnet to get the whole of the car in?

yeah, i was strapped for time when i first tried it out, so i didnt get a bonnet shot, but I've set the tripod up so its coming of the bonnet at a 3/4 angle to the car, which with my fisheye lens gets the whole car in, i just need to try it in motion now

awesome!!

you got any pics without the fisheye? i know it wouldn't look as good but i've not got a fisheye and SOOOOOOOOOOOOO want to do this

this one was taken with my 17-70mm nikkor @ 17mm. as you can see even with the tripod extended to 1.5m it still doesnt get the whole car in, but still has a nice effect

lowdownVW are meeting on sunday nite at big W / morrisons carpark at catcliffe if you know where that is and cn make it for 5pm come down and il take some of your car

it was ok really, it wasnt that busy where i was in the carpark, a chav in a red nova came down to check it out though, and a woman in a subaru came and parked right where i was taking the photos lol

ill be sorting myself out a propper set up soon , dont want to sound like a cock - but i wouldnt trust those suckers whilst my kits worth over 2 grand - so ill be sorting out a propper rig with using manfrotto parts

yeah I'm guna get a propper set up eventually, my stuff is insured so i guess I'm ok plus I'm only using an old nikon d70 body, propper car rigs soon add up for suckers, heads, boom arms etc then a 150 quid tripod ontop of that. the suckers I've got are rated at 80 kg each so theoretically they can suport 160kg but i dont recon they are that strong, but they do hold my weigh so they are good enough for now. it the tripod I'm more worried about!

mate i cant work out how u have attached the suction pad to the tripod. You've got the dual ones yea? Whats the secret?

EDIT: Just read your flickr...is that reli with electrical tape? I cant believe it holds as well as that. What speed did u do when u drove? Did u crawl or do like a normal 5-10 in a car park?

haha yeah electrical tape,, although the handles of the suction cups are hollow and the tripod leg is a pretty snug fit in there. then i have a clamp on th front and back of the handle, then the electrical tape just to make sure the clamps dont fall off, or the tripod legs slides out. for the 2 second exposure pics i did about 1-2 mph (the speedo needle didnt even move), i travelled no more than 30ft in 20/30 seconds

Ingenious and the results are worth it 8-)
