Basically i just wanted to adress the issue of wheels that stick out of arches and the legalities that are involved so that the same questions don't keep appearing. Basically wheels that stick out of the arches is a massive grey area within the law and you find that alot of the time if you are stopped by the police it can depend what mood the police officer is in! Most people believe that if the tyre tread is within the wheel arch then they are ok, however this is not written anywhere so you can't really rely on that alone. One thing for certain that is illegal is if the tyres make contact with the arch and this will fail an MOT. I carry round in my car an SVA guide which states

wheels, if there are no

pointed or sharp features

which projects beyond the

external plane of the wheel

rim, no wing nuts are fitted

and there are no

projections beyond the

vehicle body plan form

apart from tyres and wheel

discs, (including central

wheel securing nuts) if the

latter have a radius of

curvature of not less than

30mm and do not project

by more than 30mm

beyond the vehicle body

plan form

translated i think this means that the tyres are not alllwed to stick out of the arches more than 3 cm and have no obvious sharp edges. - page 46pdf or 26 on paper
