There is no way they can inforce a rule like that, think of all the many thousands of cars kept in barns, sheds, garages and even museums all over the UK.

I reckon they can and they will... More pennies for them!

But the thing is, I own 3 cars, 2 of which are at a farm in a totally none road worthy state due to the recent accident. How can they make me insure cars I cant and will never drive on the road again?

I'm sure it will just be another paperwork scam to get fines in, like the sorn'd bullshit, why a sorn declaration needs renewing, i will never know.

they'll look at the DVLA register... see 3 cars registered to you and that 1 is insured and send a fine to your house, much like they do with tax. Easy to inforce if they wanted to do it. However looks like layup insurance will be making it big if they do... or project cars will take a dive. I think its stupid. They already have ANPR so if people have an uninsured/taxed car on the road they can spot it... i dont think it needs to go this far.

I'm forever swapping my insurance from one car to another, so say my g40 daily i swap my insurance onto my other car to take it for MOT, does that mean my G40 is then gunna get a fine and crushed?

this will really fork things up for 1000's of people.

for example, i bought an arosa of a mate about a week ago that needed a couple of jobs doing, i've done the work and am due to sell friday for £600.

so i'd be expected to take out an insurance policy for a week having never put the car on the road or intending to which would cost more than the car is worth.

also, if you get a car woth no t+t technically you cannot insure it anyway. no tax apparently voids your insurance.

maybe if they changed the rules to insure the person rather than the vehicle it could be more realistic but as it stands it's another money scam on the cash cow that are uk's motorists!!!!!!

Just thinking what can they fine you with/for if you own a car thats not insured? If your not driving it they cant charge you for driving without insurance. Also if its not taxed or MOT'd then the insurance will be void anyway.

Motorists could be handed a £1,000 fine and the vehicle may even be seized thanks to a new database.

The aim of the new ruling is to target the 6% of motorists who drive without insurance. Legislation will allow the Motor Insurance Bureau to cross-reference its records with the Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency to find uninsured drivers.

Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "This is about people who are driving, who are endangering other road users, who are killing and seriously injuring people on our roads.

"We are intending to try to make sure we can stop them from doing that. The 150,000 cars that were seized by police last year, that number will grow as a result of the powers we are taking."

Plans will see uninsured vehicle owners issued with a letter asking why they have no cover.

Exemptions will be made for car enthusiasts who keep their vehicles off the road in collections or for tinkering in the garage, but they must have applied for a Statutory Off Road Notice (Sorn).

If they have no reasonable explanation, they will be liable to a fixed penalty fine of £100, rising to £1,000, and possible court action to seize their vehicle.

Well that'll be me screwed then! When the insurance runs out on my bready, where do I move it to if I have no driveway? There's only the grass verge outside my house I can park on (wide enough for a car so not on carriageway) and there's a dyke so I can't push it onto my property!

think about it... I'm a chav, i dont want to pay for insurance, or tax. heck il probably just skip the old MOT as well. So i buy a well knackered corsa... get some big wheels with baldy tyres of one of my chav mates. When i buy it- am i gonna put my name and address on the V5????

I think your all reading into this too much..it'll probably be a case of making sure everyone who owns a car is insured and then any things such as the vehicle is a show car etc and not used on the roads, will be able to be declared.

OK so it just sounds like the media blowing this out of proportion again then. Going off that RAC quote it just means car that are registered, not on the insurance database and also not sorned.

In that case I actually agree with it, it should be a good thing. If your car is genuinely off the road then SORN it, it doesn't cost anything and takes about 2 minutes on the DVLA website.

If they were going to say that even SORN'd cars had to have insurance then that'd be insane, why would you need insurance for a car that is off the road, insurance against what?

I thought we already did get fined for not having insurance? Perhaps will it stop young lads and girlies in highpower cars not knowing the capability of the car and think twice when it comes to cost.

Looks like we will all turn into "car traders" to get a traders policy where you can get into any car insured or not and will be coverd.

there isnt really a new policy here imo, just a new way of checking if people have insurance or not.

says in the article if your car is uninsured they send you a letter, and if you respond with a valid reason for it not being insured then that is ok. If it is sorned you dont even get the letter in the first place. sounds fair to me.

i agree with it anyway, uninsured drivers shouldnt be able to get away with it.

They will have to make it possible for a car to be SORNed while still being taxed if they want to enforce that.
