Best Engine Swap Choice

Featured Replies

right i have mk2 and want to swap the engine the choich is between

a gt engine

and abd with gt head

or an aee

ill rebuild the engine when i get it aswell

the engine will be modified when i get probably bike carbs, uprated cams, exhaust system, 4 branch manifold and ported and polish where i can

what is the best conversion I'm really tempted by the aee but don know how much work it is to fit it

anyone help?

also any power figuers would be good too

I've seen an aee with r6 bike carbs running 1o4bhp

G40 it!

lol, other than that, could do an aee with bike carbs.. would be rapid! 8-)

AEE or ABD in my opinion

All conversions arnt a straight swap though

g40 is outta my price range lol

i know nothings gonna be a straight swap

thats why I'm thinking if I'm going to put in effort i may aswell do AEE???

R32 DSG 4MOTION QUATTRO TDI GTI SRI tbh.

R32 DSG 4MOTION QUATTRO TDI GTI SRI tbh.

Were talking about a Mk2 polo ..

AEE/ABD's are relativly easy to fit with not too many modifications .

didnt the chop shop put a subaru engine in a mk2 golf?

DO IT!

what kind of mods would an AEE engine need then??

which would have more power and which more torque???

AEE or ABD

pd130

yeah, slap a TDI engine in. Would be a pretty rare conversion (I've not seen one) which will give you plenty of torque and the higher MPG.

And who said anything about putting the R32 engine in the front? My mates just brought one so i'm gonna blag a ride to see how much quicker than my G40 it is.

1) ABD is a 1391cc engine and is a straight nut and bolt swap. Its my most recommended,as its so easy,is very rewarding, tuneable, and every other breakers yard has one. Its all done for 150 quid plus service parts. You just need an electric fuel pump, the basic engine, and to enrichen your fuel mixture a tiny touch. You use your existing flywheel, clutch, starter, fuelling (unless you're upgrading - i used bike carbs).

2) AEE - this is what I've put into my mk2. Its a pain in the neck, and i dont recommend it over the 1.4 for small town or motorways - its strength is in A-roads. Hurdles include sorting out the engine mount anchorage point, fitting a fuel system to the different head - the biggest battery you can fit in the tray isnt butch enough to crank its 1598cc's of high compression in this weather, either. And you'll need to match clutch/flywheel/starter motor - which all costs money.

Then, when you think you're done, you'll break gearboxes - I've found one that lasts, but it only fits because i moved the whole engine/gearbox over 5mm further to the offside.

3) And if you think that sounds like grief, just try fitting an even bigger engine..

Trust me - the 1.4 ABD from the Golf may not give you a 12.8 second quarter mile, but not only is it a simple weekend swap, and reliable, its also hilarious fun at legal speeds on public roads - and that's what its all about.

And one more thing - the 1.4 ABD may not have the sheer brutality throughout the lower and mid range in 3rd,4th,5th as the 1.6 - but its tractable in 1st and 2nd,well 2nd anyway, and even has a higher top speed. Yep,only my old 1.4 ABD could mate the needle with the trip reset button - the stock 1600 lump is too torque biased and holds off by 5k rpm at around 115mph. The cam is so low,it doesn't even need a rev limiter in third.

Sorry to barge in but is the ABD a carb motor or spi ?, what year of Golf is it found in, could it be made to work in a MK3 spi ?

having thought about what youve said MikeyMK

i think the ABD would be the best bet

am i correct in thinking a GT head will go onto?

i think i will be using bike carbs, thats pretty set in my head lol

i think the Abd engine is out of a mk3 golf and i think its injection not 100% though

i was taking the piss....

R32 ?

wouldn't you be better just going for the W12 ?

nah just ratchet strap 2 x R32's together

^^^great advice...

what about being a bit more extreme and just slapping a turbo from a train onto your current engine ?

sure it'll be fine, may be a bit of lag but that can be combated by putting a few hairdryers in sequence so that it helps the turbo spool.

just looking round, seems its not only my time you like to waste

people like yu make me laugh no knowledge so you try and take the piss lol

actually i know everything.

hence why I feel I can take the piss.

in all honesty, I'd build a 1.4 GT with standard injection and go from there.

the only reason for just sticking the carbs on straight away would be that you wouldn't have to upgrade any pump to fuel injection.

  • Author

well thats handy!

as its a project car, i can afford to get everything done before even driving it, without tuning it obviously ~(on a RR i mean)

so a 1.4 abd block and a GT head

but what gear box? GT?

and flywheel, alternator, starter motor etc???

GT,ABD or the 1l ones??

so i could just whack bike carbs on, well not whack but you know lol

and no new fuel pump would be needed?

cheers

tbh, if you have the abd gearbox, use that.

if you have the GT gearbox, use that.

flywheel alt and starter, use the same as the box. I don't think there's any difference.

and yes, you can just whack carbs on but it's a lot more technical than that.

Sorry to hijack, but am i right in thinking the AEE is the mk4 1.6? If so then surely an AFH would be just as easy to fit no?
