Now with pics! Here's the gen on my polo project

Picked this low mileage polo up a couple of months back for a reasonable £130 inc tax til end of July. Spec as I bought it:

Model: Polo Ranger (anyone know what features are specific to a Ranger?)

Engine: 1.3 . 5-speed box

Suspension: Rebuilt front with new springs, shocks etc. Lowered an unknown amount at the rear (see original ad below)

Brakes: Standard rebuilt

Wheels and Tyres: Was on 14" Avus wheels all round (as fitted to scirocco scalas) but as the rears scrubbed the shocks, the PO changed the rears only to 13" polo steels.

Exterior Styling: army green - painted with a roller by the looks of things

Interior Styling: cat hair and crisps

ICE and Security: no ice and a secret booby trap security system

Here's the original ad for it:

It's had new front bottom arms,springs,shocks discs pads. fuel tank exhaust system (last year) ht leads sparks oil/fuel filter(about 1/2 month ago). it comes with new front wheel bearings (got them but they don't need changing) rear shoes and cylinders not fitted yet also a new cambelt.

smoked front lights and it has the 4 lamp grill it's army olive green 3 owners from new 55000 miles on the clock (old mot's to prove) needs tlc but i'm sure you can fix the little things.

It will need new rear shocks/springs due to it having lowered ones fitted and new mk1 golf wheels fitted 14" (great tyres) they rub on the shocks so these will have to be changed before it's mot also a tune up would be a good idea. parts new would be almost £80 for a complete new rear suspension setup or fit/find second hand stuff.

It has a small leak from the headgasket but a new gasket costs £4.20 and i have the cambelt water pump is about £15.

I was going to do a cambelt/head gasket changed as it has only done 55000 in 22years.

i also have the standard 13" steels with tyres but these are low hence the 14" alloys are now fitted.

looks like it could be a good project mate i think the scala wheels actually suit it,dont think I've ever seen a bready on scalas, good luck mate

Special features of the ranger, "sport" seats, "sport" steering wheel, rev counter,4 lamp grille and roof bars :) god bless the ranger

My ranger didnt have a rev counter, but the 'sports' seats were nice :p

Its a nice little car!

Got the same seats in my Coupe S - damn they're comfy.

Mine has the rev counter but not the sport seat :(

now, on to the build:

i was missing the great british summer without my golf's sunroof so that was among the first jobs. scored a sunroof clip from midnightrunner off this forum and got dissecting:

also got the inch of surrounding metal to use as a template:

a few minutes with the nibbler and saw of doom:

(that's my lady stripping the crap off the boot)

and done (I'll miss out the 2 weeks of faffing and trial fitting before i found the SECOND seal that fits in the frame...

scored a sweet set of clubpolo mats off the 'bay:

and also messed around with a few bits i have lying around in the garage

haha - the porker rims are 8" wide. there's no way they would fit on without serious archwork (and even then i'm not certain). like i say - was just messing around with bits i had on the shelf...

anyway - some progress. picked up a set of 50/70 lowering springs/shocks which i stripped, painted in black POR15 and had the lairy red springs stripped and powdercoated black. built the struts back up again so they're waiting to go on.

also got hold of some VWII (G40 polo, mk2 golf) calipers which I stripped, rebuilt with new seals and detailed in silver. i used halfrauds bake caliper aerosol and i'm not entirely happy with the look of them though so i'll probably repaint them at a later date - any suggestions for decent caliper paint?

i'll be teaming the calipers with some black diamond vented discs and greenstuff pads.

in the meantime i removed the old struts and then both front wings and started cleaning off the old underseal - in hindsight, i probably should have left it well alone except in the places it's flaking off. as it is, i'm committed now so looks like i'll be taking the whole lot off.

the previous owner has cut away the wheelarch lip on each wing. it's not a great job and, seeing as the wings have a few dings, i'm on the lookout for replacements. if anyone has a straight and rust free wing - either side or a pair, then please get in touch.

yeah - been a bit lax with the thread updates. and busy with work.

but i managed to get a few more bits done. will update tonight at home when i can access my photobucket account. as usual with the these things tho, what started out as a "quick cheery up project" has taken on a life of its own...

so where was i?

well, as something to make me smile i stencilled the bonnet

whilst my girlfriend started stripping the matt black and matt green off the boot lid. the underlying paint hadn't been prepped/DA'd so it came off with some elbow grease and a cup of thinners

also started testing some colour options - tried some plastikote cappuccino on the petrol flap. looked ok wet but dried a bit grey with hints of lilac which i wasn't keen on!

so onto the engine room:

there wasn't anything wrong with the stock 1.3, but i scored a sweet deal on a GT engine, box and exhaust system.

after speaking to a few people on this forum i decided to stick with my ranger's 5 speed box over the shorter ratio GT box.

i figure while the engine is out i'll do some engine bay tidying.

starting with this:

a roll of masking tape and a marker pen to label everything. two half days later i was down to this:

i've only ever swapped out aircooled engines before which don't have all the plumbing and only a fraction of the wiring so i'm a little worried i'll not remember everything when it comes to dropping the GT lump in

time to clean 20 years of oil, waxoil and seam sealer off:

that's all for now. i'm having a hectic time at work so it's unlikely to see any more progress for a week or so. that said, i might get down to the unit to take more pics and fill in the blanks from previous posts.

on a final note, sold the old engine, the GT box and a GT cam i had on the shelf to a guy (dan) off this forum. he's replacing the 1l engine in his mk3 with my 1.3 ranger lump and fitting the GT cam at the same time. good luck with the install dan!

i'll get back down and get some photos on thurs. slow progress at the moment due to work being a PITA and me adding more cars to the fleet...

stripped and detailed the GT rear axle and drums and got all new brake components to build that up so fingers crossed for getting that done at the weekend...

Kudos to Macksimus and his fair lady for making some awesome progress on (what I/we have now named) 'V1'

Time for a bump and an update on this thread for followers... well, macksimus and I have been doing a little wheeling and dealing and this wonderful piece of Volks-art is now mine and Macksimus has invested in an absolute diamond of a vehicle (aka V2). When I get my pics uploaded and my ideas formalised, I'll show you all my intentions, progress and the change of direction. I'm also pretty sure the previous careful owner would also be all too happy to embelish on his project.

Shameless plug - Macksimus also has a thread going for a Polo Derby for breaking, if you need parts for a MK2 check it out if you can, it may have what you need... By the way, I'm the mate with the garage and I'm the one who fell in love with the cherry-bomb.
