Featured Replies

Hi me and my mate (mechanic) have been trying to get my steering wheel off but with no joy. He has managed to get the clips off but the front still doesnt want to budge. Are we missing something?!

Thanks

theres 3 clips that hold the air bag inplace. have to get at them from behind with a flat screw driver, quite fiddly

pop this off, then unplug the horn lead and airbag lead. (ignition turned off)

i think its 3 screws that hold the horn mechanism to the steering wheel, undo these. Stops a big headache if the horn mechanism becomes unravled

then crack off the big nut in center. slide the wheel off the spline

Took me 10 mins with a vw technician ;) lol

just another note on them 3 clips you deal with 1st

You have to unhook them and there spring loaded. I found the easy way was to pop two off. then support it to prevent it slotting back inplace as you fiddle with the final clip.

Just wedge your fingers under it to stop it falling back in

otherwise your just going round in circles.

Thanks alot for that but I'm still struggling to understand the first part. There is a hole either side of the steering wheel on the back with a spring clip either side as far as i can tell.

Now one clip isnt even there and weve managed to get the other side off (its rattling around inside now). How do we get to the other clip? It seems to be well stuck on - the face of the wheel that is.

Thanks in advance!

Ok mate, yeah there spring clips, Kind of hook over the steering wheel.

You want to be placing your screwdriver under the metal tab of the clip and pushing it outwards. whilst pulling the airbag towards you.

Then move around to the other side They really are a pain in the arse mate! am sorry i cant describe it very well

to get good access. turn the hole to top dead center undo it. Get your mate to hold on the the airbag to stop it popping back in and spin the wheel around (without ignition on) then pop the other one off.

where in east yorkshire are you? I'm in doncaster lol

Haha thanks, I still feel retarded because as far as I'm aware, the clips are off on mine. In one hole there is no spring clip at all. You can look in the slight gap and see a coil spring and thats all. If you put the screwdriver in, theres nothing in there. We got the other clip off a couple of days ago and that is the same (Its rattling about inside). Now what do we do? The airbag or front face plate cap thing still wont budge! You say there is a 3rd clip, how do you get to that?

Cheers for the advice though, I appreciate it would be hard to describe!

Oh I live in a village between Hull and Beverley. Probably see you at a meet sometime :)

yeah, sorry mate, there are just 2 clips, i was thinking about something else!

You sure it wont just pull off? One of the clips must be still holding it on lol. Theres a nack to doing it unfortunately, pretty frustraighting lol.

To sort the clip thats fallen off, you'd have to investigate when/if (lol) you get the airbag removed.
