on saturday 16th jan i finally picked up sambo's old red arosa 1.0 for a bargain price, mot failure with 164k on the clock but most importantly was cheeep!

as expected the little red beast needs some love, so far i've sourced;

lupo gti front hubs / brakes with new bearings

gti arb

polo 16v seats

16v rear beam

going to look at some coily's later.

i need to sort some 14" rims to clear the new brakes too.

got me bits today (19th), polo 16v seats, 256mm hubs with new vag bearings/ calipers + ebc greenstuff pads, 2 x 16v arb's, rear beam with built in arb from 16v and 2 x new front coilovers - sticking to the bargain bucket guidlines - paid £100 for the lot!

rear bench and 1 x arb not required so up for grabs.

fitted the brakes/ hubs up today (21st) and slung the bbs on too.

right lowered the rear earlier (28th)

when i bought it it already had chopped springs that were cable tied in place, this was the ride height

the main problem with chopping springs is when you jack it up the shock extends (as below) and the spring falls out or off the seat

this is the chopped down spring length just before it drops off the seat (no weight on it)

now i need to go lower (lower than coilys can manage either) so the springs will need to be shorter, the problem is i can't be doing with the springs dropping off everytime i jack it up, so the only solution is to fit shorter shocks

as you can see the travel isn't much shorter but the overall length is reduced

these shocks are not vag items and the bottom mounting is narrower than the arosa items, so a 4-5mm spacer is needed

this will need to be fitted in the inner edge of the beam

i lopped a bit off the springs (not alot - you'll se why at the end) that were already chopped down

with both shocks and springs fitted this is the length of the spring in place under 30+ mm of compression but the wheel off the ground just the shorter shock compressing the spring and holding it in place

so now this is the tyre to arch gap with the wheels off the ground and the shocks fully extended

now i could go another 20-30mm drop in the following pics but as you'll see i need more wheels before i do that

i decided to strip out the rear trim earlier (29th)

if there's any trim in the above pic you want just let me know

also srtipped the cards off

next part to be removed was the rear seat mount, i drilled out all the spot welds

and pulled it off

done 150 mile round trip today to pick up a few bits for budget box - £270 later (keeping it cheapo) this is what i got...

hopefully start getting the 1.0 out this week and clean the valver up.

thanks chaps - it's just a bit of a fun project - been thinking about some custom diy bodywork, diy paint etc etc nothing expensive.

i'm hoping to keep it all below 1k hence project budgetbox - including buying the car i'm upto £505 so far.

anyway got home from work at half 4 and started doing some bits

by half 6 i'd got this far and packed all the tools away then i had to weld some subfrmes to corsa bucket seats for a mate.
