let me guess... the head gasket went?

is there a cam chain at each end of the head? if not then how the fuck does the other half of the cam turn? :?

(i would just like to point out i am no expert on engines so if i have just wrote some thing really stupid above then please go easy on me )

the part of the factory that made the joiny bit were probably on strike when this engine was made

lmao! it was werid as she drove to uni then finished and it wouldnt start wouldnt even turn over or anything called the recovery out they said the head gasket has gone so it came home went down out mechnaics place took the head off and found that!, but it must have happened whilst she was driving......... :?

If that happens when a head gasket goes, does the suspension fall off when you get a flat?

Looks pretty normal for a DOHC to me i take you had a chain runnin a trinagle from the cranksaft to one cam shaft then to the next or was it from crankshaft to one cam shaft then another chain off that to the 2nd?

haha

i dont think so! she had a flat once and drove home like it, woman drivers eh? cant recall the suspension falling off TBF

Rover didnt make the engines, a company called "Powertrain" did

so stop the hate towards MG-Rover

TBH something should have fallen off....

them engines are so bad! the amount of them we get in at work because of head gaskets is unreal! i think in the hand book theres a guide line saying get the head gasket changed every 35000 miles!

Oh the irony!

If there is any evidence in there of bits that used to fill that gap, then I guess that might give you the answer to how the valves got fucked. If the cam snapped in the middle and it stopped turning, then probably the 2 valves on that side would have stopped in the open position, then 'hello piston'!

Potentially, she could have been driving it on 2 cylinders! Some people just don't have a clue, and can't hear any problems because they have the stereo so loud.

Snapped K-Series camshafts are a known fault

I snapped a Polo cam clean in half, was a standard coupe S 1.3 MH. Just stalled and wouldn't restart.

Didn't damage any valves, just put another cam in and off it went.

Wow lucky, must have snapped just as it closed the valves that section controlled then before it snapped?

And to MK3_Andy:

Maybe Rover didn't make the engines...but they kept putting them in cars for years even though everyone knows they are shit. Well actually no...they are not shit, they have quite an impressive amount of power considering the age of the design and the size of them. Just a shame they can't go more than 3 miles without doing a headgasket though.

But still it was a bad decision on Rovers part to keep putting such an unreliable engine into their cars.

The worst bit about it, is that the company that owns MG Rover now, has rectified the fault completely, and is selling a retrofit kit for somewhere around £300. Why the fuck could Rover not have done that in the 20+ years the K series has been in production?

If they did that then they wouldn't have been able to afford the tea and biscuits to keep the workers happy.

BMW are to blame... costcutting on the expensive-to-assembel k-series ment dodgy headgaskets and plastic dowells...

oh, and where did honda get their Vtec? fron Rover's early K-series... if the money had kept coming in, they could have been amazing VVT engines.

They were like that long before BMW got involved, just BMW weren't arsed to do anything about it, just like Rover weren't.
