Meant to do this months ago, but lacking any way of taking digital photos, i haven't. Means that there are very few WIP shots, but there are a few before and afters. I'l let the pictures speak for themselves, hope you like. Everyone loves an MK2 loon, especially with those square lights!!

First up, engine. 1.6 AEA. Picked up over a year ago, and tried to source parts for ages.

It was stripped of all the gubbins, such as power steering pump etc, amazing how small it is without all that stuff!! Then cleaned and prepped for the next stage!

Then painted it, actually painted it 3 times! First off the paint went on really badly, it had seperated. So I stripped it back. Then when I repainted it, it had awful brush marks in it, and i got jealous when i saw someone else's engine, which had been sprayed. So out came the nitromors and heavy duty wire brush again!! Put the engine paint through the gun this time, and the finish is much better. Not perfect, but not much of it is seen

The engine has been fully stripped and rebuilt with all new bottom end bearings, new rings, new valves, guides and seals up top. All of the bolts you can see are stainless, and have been hand polished by me to get them that shiny! The stainless mani also just looks awesome too! Rocker has been hand polished too, but has been sat in the garage so long, its gathered dust!

So the planis to drop it into this...

Laura's (Dirrt???) old 'Loon. Engine was seized in it, and i happedned to have an engine looking for a car, so I snapped this up! Condition is so good for a 27yr old car. V.little rust, but the usual dings and dents. Go this in january, and spent the summer doing this...

This only got sprayed last week, but i stripped the engine out in april!! Smoothing the bay was such a chore. In fact, i smoothed it once, but wasn't happy. So took the angle grinder to it, and re-did all the filling again (do you see a trend?! ). Anyhow, i got some strange looks dragging it into the garage, since it has no front wheels, i had to go all he-man and do it by muscle alone! I think he local villagers thought I'd lost it (most of them have taken a passing interest in the car, must be from seeing me sitting in the engine bay, covered in filler dust all summer).

So this is it, as it stands today, a lovely engine, and a lovely bay, but not within reach of each other The plans are to get that remedied asap. Thing is, i have a nasty habit of having to clean and paint EVERYTHING! So could take some time!

Plans are;

cbr600 bike carbs (have, but need a manifold)

Attach the £45 full 2" ashley exhaust (thanks to beige and brown)

Custom front suspesion (dare i say using saxo parts?)

Adjustable rear suspension

Poly bushes up front

256mm uprated front brakes with twin-pot G60 calipers (courtesy of panda)

Rear disc conversion (which i have)

Attach the GT rear beam for a bit of stiffness at the rear (ooh-eer) thanks to big burt

Get the tear drops mirror polished

Need to aquire some spacers to get the stance right

Get the steering damper on (thanks GenesisGT)

Also, would like to thank seanvw too for sending me the crank shaft sprocket for free! wha a man!

Also have some plans for the interior including;

Sciroc front seats (for the Gangsta low-lean) re-trimmed in blue and brown tartan, love that 70s kitch!

Same with the rear bench

Custom iPod dock in front speaker grille

Ice install including Vibe components up front, powered by a VP2, Vibe 6x9s powered by a VP2, Vibe sub powered by a VP3 amp in the back

Hope its made interesting reading for some. If anyone has any early 'loon parts kicking about, let me know. Always looking for things. Also, I'm looking for one more piece to go in the engine, a circlip holding the gugeon pin in. If anyone knows where to get one from, or if anyone has an old piston knocking around, again, hook me up with a pm. Need to get this before the engine can go back together.

Really need to start putting things back on, but i just seem to be de-rusting and taking things off! At least it made it light enough to lift up!!

you've got the best mirrors on there too I see... they're the ones i'll have when I come to own a g40...

I took the angle grinder with harsh wire brush atatchment to mine before nitromorsing it. Grinder got most of it off, just left it in the recesses. As regards to painting, I uesd por15 metal ready (from a company called frosts) and then painted it with frosts engine paint, designed for higher temps. You can use a brush to apply it, since it comes in a tin. I just thinned it down a bit for the gun. I just wasnt happy with the streaky finish, but otherwise, brush is fine. Some people have used 2K/2 pack on bottom ends before, but I'm not sure how that would react to the heat. You can get that in a can, but its quite pricey. Thing is, any idiot can get a shiney finish with it, so its perfect for amateurs, like me the bay was done in 2k you see, two coats, an hour, and thats the finish i got (not as good as the picture shows) but a lovely shine anyhow. However, personally, i wouldnt use 2K on an engine block. I got my compressor from Aldi of all places, 100 notes. You can get them 2nd hand from ebay too for little money if your itnerested in that route. I personally will never use a brush again!!!

you got lucas 60 calipers then? twin-pot audi s2 brakes? if so your pedal travel is going to be ridiculous! you should really consider a remote servo and brake pedal box. have a look at compbrakes website for cheap prices, however pinches doesnt like them, said they are of very cheap quality

Ahh, you know roxy then? Yep, slowly fading on my driveway, she will ride again though

I'm not sure what the model number is, haven't even had the chance to get them out of the box yet! I'll investigate the pedal box too. Whats involved with fitting one? and where would i put a servo? Have toyed with the idea, but cost and knowing where to put it put me off. Dont really want to clutter the bay since i want it looking tidy. Was going to upgrade to a larger MC, would that help?

I've got a 22mm MC with 256mm brakes - single pot Lucas 54 calipers, and the pedal is near the floor, but does stop well, its very easy to lock the wheels up, but likewise can scrub alot of speed off, very quickly.

if your running the twin pot calipers, i can pretty much guarantee that the standard mk2 (which is servoless) with any uprated MC, of which i dont know fo an uprated one you can fit without a servo, would leave you a large amount of pedal travel, i also have the 256mm brakes on my mk1 which has no servo, and again pedal on the floor but it does stop. does just make you brown trousers it!

So a MK2 golf MC wont fit without a servo?

If i got a pedal box, and 22mm MC, could i ditch the servo and not be touching the floor every time i brake? I dont mind brown trousers, but i dont think my GF is such a fan!

Small update, just a piccy of the colour coded and polished alternator

And some Smiths gauges I aim to get put into a custom dash. Not sure if all the electrics will be compatible. Any ideas
